They say that Iphones are pretty accurate. If you own one you can use it for free!

I was wanting a handheld light meter than may be easier to fumble around and not accidentally drop xD I hear those Luna Pros are decent! I need accuracy because I am in no way schooled on light reading!

If its any help, got myself a sekonic L-308s which meters flash as well. It's above your budget ($175) but works wonders.

I agree with Mr. Gales. I was in market for a light meter until I tried out an Iphone app "myLightmeter". Compared it against the TTL meter readings of my 35mm camera. Identical readings! Try it before you go and buy dedicated one. Can't hurt and may save you a few bucks.

What sort of metering?

I'm partial to the Sekonic L208 which seems to sell for ~$65 used. Its a great little pocketable meter which I use almost exclusively in incident mode. I'd stay far away from it if you are looking for something more spot meter like though.

Meter accuracy (say, to 1/10 stop) will be of no help if you want to "meter the shadows" and are faced with a variety of shadows differing among them by, not 1/10 stop, but 3 stops or more. Metrologic accuracy of the meter is no substitute for experience, judgement, knowing your film/developer, and being consistent.

I have a L358. I also use the Lumu app (without their meter) on my iPhone. The app is great the only limitation is that the iPhone camera will only work down to EV3 so you'll never get meter readings lower than that.

Don't understand the logic you decide which shadow you want zone 1 detail in the print and meter for that, if you change your mind, your fault 50% of time you won't have detail.

I have an original Gossen DigiFlash - it still sells for around $125 while the DigiFlash 2 sells for $230.

I have used the iPhone for a while, and it works nicely for me. I tried using a Sekonic at one point but couldn't really figure out metering for a landscape, so I went back to iPhone. Kind of unfavorable opinion around here but it rarely lets me down and I like seeing the live preview of exposure.

And for the obsessive sorts (come on now, we're photographers after all ...) some lightmeter apps can save a thumbnail and the readings -- you can even type in a note -- heck, you can even email it!!!

I will second the Pocket Light Meter app. It has worked quite well for me on many occasions.

The quality of the smart phone meter apps is apparently dependent on the phone used. If you use an Iphone, you may be fine.

But of course, if you have an Iphone, it has or will cost you more than $100.00.

My choice would be a Digiflash or a Lunapro SBC/Profisix.

Yes, I've heard that. I have an iPhone 5c which is a fairly recent beast. According to Verizon, it was "free." (No, I will not show you our wireless bill!!!! )

I think the point is that most -- well "many" -- of us own/carry one anyway, photographing or not.

And agreed, I have the original Digisix which is pretty much my goto unless I'm getting into something serious enough to want the Sekonic L-508. I've actually not done a serious "scientific" test of the meter apps I have, but for scenes like my example it appears to work OK.

I like the Luna Pro SBC mainly for the dial that gives a full range of aperture and shutter speed combinations. They read both ambient and flash and both reflected and incident. the later black ones use a a 9V battery.
Around the Chicago area they seem to go for around $75-$100.

I've had a 308s in the past and it worked fine, I just liked the information on the Gossen much better.

The Luna Pro SBC (Profisix) does not meter flashlight. You need a Profiflash attachment for this.
