I'm in! great idea. I vote "up to" 8x10, traditional prints only, any format.

I don't mind organizing it, it sounds like a pretty simple concept.

- if x people want to do the exchange
- Everyone makes x - 1 prints of the same image and mails them to me along with a return stamped self addressed envelope
- I receive them and split them up and send them back to everyone.

So, how long do we give everyone to sign up and make their prints? 1 month ok?

sounds good Tim. Only thing I'd add is see how many people 'sign up'. If it's less than 15 I'd say just have one group, any more and have to spilt into groups.

How about 2 weeks to sign up (need to know final numbers before start printing), a month to print and send (then you get 2 days to turn them around  )

so :
Sign Up - 16/5/2010
Send Prints - 16/6/2010

Now to decide on print 'rules'
1. Prints 8"x10" max
2. Traditional commercial prints OK. ie. Regardless of Lab process, print is on 'photographic' paper from a neg/pos.
3. Unmounted prints only (due to postage costs)
4. You tell us about making the print (this is also a learning tool) and if you desire. the image taking (locations don't need to be divulged)

regarding point 2. How strict do we want to be? I'd prefer to allow someone to join in with inkjets if thats what they have at their disposal. Might allow someone 'remote' to participate where they normally couldn't.

Anything else?

Nige.

Sign Up. Add your name to the list (for those in this posting, confirm your acceptance to my interpretation of your post in the thread as to your willingness to participate!). Those that I judged to be 'thinking about it', just jump on the list if you want.

I'll confirm my acceptance. And I agree that it is probably fair to allow inkjets, as long as the original photograph was taken on film.

I'm confirming I'm number 8! And thanks Tim for running the exchange

I'm glad people are willing to accept inkjet prints, as thats all that some labs offer....

What people need to remember is that even though a lab prints on photographic paper (say a Fuji Frontier, a Noritu or even a old Agfa DCS) they print DIGITALLY from a scanned neg......no one I know still runs a optical lab (and I've asked lots of people - I've worked in the photographic trade since 1983) and no one can think of a suburban lab that still runs a optical lab - and most pro labs also print from scanned negs, unles you want a custom (read expensive) print....

The most important rule is that the original image needs to be shot on film/paper (for those of us doing pinhole) and are wet processed....

I've been following this thread thinking "That would be great, but maybe another time, I'm in the middle of this, and of that..." but you know what Nige, I think this might be exactly what I need to kick myself in to gear in the darkroom again! So, count me in... now to find something worthy of sharing

So, we have 11 confirmed 4 unconfirmed,

should we cap the list and start a second group? I think 11-15 prints is enough for me!!

and, postage wise. You can get pre-paid envelopes at aust post:
C4 (324x229) 20mm max thickness 500gm max weight $2.50

So, I suggest the following guidelines with sending prints.
- Buy 2 x C4 pre-paid envelopes
- Address one to me (I'll PM my address)
- Address the second one to yourself
- In the first envelope, put your prints, some sheets of matt/cardboard/bubble wrap as protection and the second envelope folded in half
- If you don't want them bent, put "don't bend" or something on both envelopes, the posties around here like to bend stuff when putting in the letter box. Better yet, "leave on doorstep" or something

Once I have everyone's, I'll open them, split them up and send them back in the envelope you provided. Also whatever protection/backing you use I will send back with the exchange prints (so if you are printing smaller than 8x10, make sure whatever you use to protect the prints is big enough for 8x10)

Also, Anyone suggest a template to use for technical details?

Sound good?

Been away overseas on business, and I'm suprised to see this thread revived!

Anyway, count me in (confirmed etc) - although I'd prefer to keep it to a maximum of about 10-15 prints required... (low boredom threshold if I have to print too many of the same image etc).

Cheers

I suggest we wait until the sign-up phase has completed then split into appropiate sized groups
