Whoa. Back up the ponies mfohl. It is not the new sign up month just yet.

But I guess we'll have to accept that you'll be top of the new list.

Postcards have been flooding in the last few days.

@Howard Earl - Great to see 4x5 contact prints. Ahhh the tones. Lovely.
@MattiS - Another large format shot - great tones and detail - interesting artwork!
@RSImages - Impressive macro shot. The high contrast and grain work very well for the Dragonfly.
@cramej - Astonishing amount of detail. Very nicely done.
@astroclimb - Nice quiet harbor scene. Unfortunately, this is one of two postcards where the postal service has put a piece of tape across the front to put on some markings for machine-reading I suspect (?)
@Lucid - Another 4x5 contact. Just oozing tones! Fantastic. Great composition to boot!
@Nige - Love the tones and contrast of this lith print.Good old Konica IR too.. Fantastic.
@cramej - Lovely composition and print. Very nice indeed.
@jvo - Ahhh trees. And light. What more do we need. So good.

I received hwv's Expo today. It looks like it was an expo center in better days. Now there is only a broken sign and a bicycle. Thanks Heinz-Willi!

Cheers,

Before I forget (again) I should give some feedback on two lovely cards which recently made their way through my letterbox.

@astroclimb - Many thanks for your card. It's always nice to see something which is normally hidden from view. The weather looks great, I hope you got to enjoy it! The stamps were a nice touch, and I was surprised to see one of them was a 'non-machinable surcharge'. I'm pleased to say that the image emulsion hasn't been removed on your print from those rough sorting rollers.

@hwv - A very enjoyable holiday capture. I like the detail which has been retained in the various brickwork. The shadows add some nice symmetry to the image. It must have been very bright, and hot! The location piqued my interest, and I attempted to find the location on google street view. The winding roads and snaking alleyways must have made for a great day of exploring.

My thanks to @iandvaag, @drpsilver, @MattKing and @hkbenji for their recent feedback on my card. I'm really digging contact printing and I'll likely give it a go for round 51. To spice things up, I'm thinking about applying a few niche techniques to the print. I'll keep you all posted. Literally!

I too received hmv's "Expo". I like these sorts of faded glories. It is also a nice print.

Alright everyone, my cards are done and will be mailed out tomorrow. Apologies for the delay - the aircon unit in my darkroom has died and with the heat (38C+) and humidity I've had a hard time working in there. But a recent bout of insomnia, which has had me up most nights, proved most beneficial, as I could work when the temperatures were more reasonable and not have to worry about a closed door which increases the temperature of my darkroom to an unbearable level.

I've been remiss in commenting on the great cards I've received so far, so without further ado, here we go:

The first theme I noticed this round was the flora: the delicate "Bleeding Heart Plant" by Howard Earl, the lovely "Rose in Glass" by cramerj, the sharp looking "Double Clematis" by Luis F. Sosa, the excellent "Fungus Ladder" by drpsilver (I can never seem to photograph this kind of fungus well), and jvo's "Arboreal Spirits" - which almost looks like a dance between the two main branches.

The next theme was that of people - BSP's quirky grinning skeleton, MattisS' "Mennesket ved Havet" - a monument I had never heard of but would like to see the next time I'm in Denmark, Hkbenji's climbers in "Climbing" which looks amazing but is something I could never do (thanks vertigo!), and of course iandvaag's poignant "Covid Kiss" - a beautifully captured moment that shows what life has been like for so many people during this crisis.

The final theme seems to be based around structures: hwv's "Toy Blocks" reminds me a lot of the crowded nature of Japanese homes and businesses as well, astroclimb's dry "Gig Harbour" and mfohl's wet "Town St. Bridge" have two very different looks but also work together, and Terry S' "Lloyd's Building" which looks amazingly futuristic and has so much going on in it that I could look at it for quite a long time. Then there is the specific focus of Arvid's "doors", a subject matter that I quite enjoy photographing myself, and vedostuu's "Coffee and Cigarettes", aka the car which looks beautiful and leaves me wanting to see the rest of it! Finally, there are the ruined or abandoned structures, from Lucid's "Under Destruction" which works so well, especially with the upside-down sign, to oxleyroad's "Roadworks" which reminds of the roadworks I saw myself while in Birmingham last April (a year too late to be coincidence unfortunately), to last, but not least, rst's (good to have you back!) lovely cyanotype of an empty playground. I can't remember the last time I got a cyanotype in the exchange, so this was a pleasant surprise (well, not really, since you told us this is what you were going to do).

I think there are a couple more postcards that have been mailed out but I haven't received yet, based on the comments in this thread. I'm not sure how fast my cards will get to everyone (there's a bit of a backlog with JP Post at the moment) but hopefully they'll get to you sooner rather than later! In the meantime, I'm off to sign up for round 51. Cheers everyone.

A little bit more about my cards: Unlike virtually every other round, I have not provided any functional details on the postcards, so I'll briefly mention them here since there wasn't enough room to explain all of this on the card. All images were shot on my Nikon FE. Although this is a favourite camera of mine, it's not my main user when I travel. However, it was the only camera I bought on this trip (other than my Holga) because of extreme carry-on weight limitations - I figured I could get more images with 35mm rolls than 120 and save on weight and space in the process. However, since I hadn't used it in a while, I had some issues - like forgetting to change the film speed settings, not realizing that the battery was dying on me (it acted differently to my other FEs), and unfortunately, once I got home, I realized that many of my films were damaged in some way - different kinds of fogging mostly. I don't know if it was from the heat or x-rays or both. In any event, I have a lot fewer usable images than I had hoped because of all these issues. I'm still on the fence about how I feel about them. Still, I had great memories from the trip and wanted to share with everyone, so here we are.

I sent three different images this round, all from the same trip, but without giving anything away I'll just refer to them by abbreviation:

Postcard 1 (MP): Shot on Acros, was accidentally massively overexposed (but saved a bit in the processing in Xtol). Taken at sunrise. This location was the main reason for travelling here, and this is where my camera died absolutely (I left my spare batteries back at camp) so I have very few images to show for it. The main reason why I'd like to return here someday.

Postcard 2 (JB): Also shot on Acros, developed in Rodinal. In every respect this roll was okay, but there seems to be a bit of fogging happening here that gives it a bit of a toned/vintage look.

Postcard 3 (OD): Shot on Silvermax 100 and developed in Silvermax - first time shooting with the film and I have to say that I like it a lot. This image, in the contact print, looks very infrared-y, but I couldn't quite achieve the same look for the postcard. In any event I think I'll be shooting this film more in the future.

Cheers.

I received a really nice postcard today - a rose in a glass vase/bottle, sitting on a ledge or window sill.
There is lots of texture in the weathered and worn surfaces, the composition is pleasingly off centre, the light is inviting and the print is compelling.
It has a stamp from Malta on it, a signature I can't decipher (Alan?), a "2020" in the margin and absolutely no clue as to what the title might be, or who the photographer might be.
Normally I would have a list of participants and their addresses to help solve the mystery, but for me this is a truly extraordinary round - all who have so generously sent me their cards while knowing I am unable to reciprocate this time.
Whoever you are, thank you!

I only have one card left to send - the post offices here still won't accept any mail to Russia!

Three more cards received with thanks:

@hwv - quite a lot of architecture combined in one shot! Nicely done.
@mike c - Love the strong backlight and composition. Glen Campbell song comes to mind.
@iandvaag - What a great and meaningful photograph. Thank you for the story.

@Rowreidr - You card has just made it's way through my letterbox. I'm surprised how quick it made it. A very fun lomographic image of an iconic piece or architecture. I enjoy seeing the raw frame, and the sprocket holes are a nice inclusion. The quality of inkjet print is excellent. Many thanks for sending my way.

Glad to hear it finally made it! I’m still a little leery of Japan Post at times and whether or not the post will get through in a timely manner (pandemic only).

Two new ones to report on.

@Black Dog - I received my first color postcard. I love the mood of Waverley Station. I've gone back and just looked at this several times.

@hkbenji - this is also a first, a first square format and first coming in from Asia. I don't think I could climb that.

Today I wondered what my postal carrier is thinking. I know some of you have mentioned that it has sparked conversations with you carrier. I'm never home when the mail arrives so don't get the chance to talk to them.

@mooseontheloose - I received your lovely card in the post today. A nicely composed image of a timeless subject. I like the weighting of the boarders on the card. The notes on the back made for a very interesting read. I hope I will be able to experience the location in person one of these days. Thanks again for sending a card my way.

I received Black Dog's "Emma's Wedding" and Rowreidr's "Empire State Sprockets" earlier this week (not sure when, it's all a blur!). It was nice getting two slightly larger than normal postcards. Jake, I'm not sure what paper you used but I really love the finish! The image is a really nice slice of (wedding ceremony) life. Rowreidr - it's been awhile since I've shot film with the sprocket holes showing, but I think it really works in this image - it really forces the viewer to keep looking up. I like it.

Another 7 cards have arrived since my last update which I note in no particular order. Twenty total have arrived now. ianvaag - "Covid Kiss". Such a personal and emotional picture. Thanks for sharing with me. hwv - "Toy Blocks". Black Dog - "Glasgow Light". My first and so far only color postcard this round. Hkbenji - Climbing. Square photo, square postcard. I really enjoyed the detail captured within this scene. mooseontheloose - Beehive tombs. Wow, what a place. I have now added it to the bucket list of mine. astroclimb - Tide is out. I am always facinated how the rise and fall of tides changes all over the globe and seeing the evidence marked on surfaces. Rowreidr - Empire State Sprockets. My wife commented that she really likes seeing panoramic pictures with the sprockets, and added "you can't do that". Which presently she is correct.

Thanks to all for sharing these postcards.
