rtbadman's card of double reflections in to mirrored buildings came today, this building looks familiar to me. Like the crazy distortions created by the windows.

Congratulations Kathy. Not being a parent I will say nothing. I will echo what Matt said because photography not only develops artistic skills, but observational skills that are applicable to all aspects of life.

I wish you and your growing family the best.

Regards,
Darwin

"Jake (black dog) - "The old houses dream of the old days".
Lovely composition here, perfectly framed and printed. I dig the white space at the base of the card, it makes for a nice place to hold and look through the photo. The ripple-y light on the left, on the bottom half of the photo, is my favourite part. I have distinct memories of crawling around on the floor as a little'n looking up at these big windows in our livingroom, and these strange ripples light on the floor in front of me...And I always like your quote on the back of your cards, I think the last one was Bob Dylan. "

Thanks Fleath-was feeling a bit zonked that day as I'd had to get up at 6 AM to cook breakfast for 100 odd people and then travelled several hundred miles to get to some old friends' house, where I've taken many, many pictures over the last 30 years or so. The light was so beautiful that evening and I remembered a Wilfred Owen poem quoted on the cover of Stanley Road by Paul Weller...I'm very pleased with the results [also shot some pics with my Trip] and have spent some time experimenting with high key printing for them.

Rob-love the paper which matches the subject perfectly. Reminds me of Art Classic!

Mark Rewald's Mexican statue came on Friday. I can see why you wanted to grab this shot and I can imagine exactly the tones and texture you have tried to capture.

As for flatness I've no complaints. All postal services must have taken care of my picture from Mark.

20 down, let us see how many of the balance of 10 I am expecting get delivered.

I must have misplaced mooseontheloose's postcard, as I distinctly remember seeing it now, but it's not in my pile here. I must keep better track of my postcards as I get them...and maybe clean my desk once in a while.

Four more in my post box today!

Ruediger (rst) - Ah these exchanges could do with some more pinhole photos - I dig this. There's a really nice glow about everything, and the softness of the water is wonderful. A lot of stillness.

Mark Rewald - Nice and flat here too, Australia post must have been kind to it. I love the depth of detail in this, I thought it was medium format for a moment, but nope, just proper craftsmanship. A great range of tones perfectly printed, and a really brilliant subject.

Jeff Merlet - A great shot, with one thing missing - they haven't yet tried to bury the youngest in the sand. A nice warm family photo of young intrigue, the whisp in the lad's hair is a nice little touch.

Rob Skeoch - Thank you for the sneak peek at Ilford's tinkerings with the new emulsion, the paper is certainly unlike anything else I've seen. It reminded me of liquid light coated over a nice 300gsm paper, but obviously much cleaner than usual, and the texture reminds me of their old "velvet" finish I got to try a box of once upon a time. And the photograph itself, it reminds me a lot of the house I lived in out in the desert here as a young boy, but obviously with much more grass. Perfect composition and really nice mix of textures with the grass, timber and steel against a nice delicate sky.

Whooo was I late this round. Cards are printed and stamps have been bought. I'll put the labels on tonight and stick them in the mail tomorrow morning.

Quite a while since the first round of my comments. Here is round 2:

Allen Friday – Steam Train coming at us. Nice arrangement of the action within the scene, and a well use of tones within the image. I like it.

Black Dog – In a silent way. Crisp foreground with light highlights balances nicely against the dark and brooding ‘skyline’. Nice tonality of the dark grey middle frame growing lighter to where it meets the dark skyline.

Bwakel – Sorry, I know I got your card, but cannot presently locate it to comment on it.

crispinuk – Slices of Southsea. If a well executed triptych is good, then this is great. A great concept, well executed. Obviously the right tool for capturing the image, but with the inspiration to use it so removed from its’ intended market.

Gurgenprinz – A slick image of a crisp old roadster with the details of the streetscape looming in the shadows. The panning streaks in the shadows work very well. And on nice old paper as well.

Hwv – closed up doors in stucco – Nice black texture-less foreground, to near full white in the lower part of the window niches. Fantastic mid tone micro contrast. Delightful symnmetry.

Laurent – Oh, but I like all of the different elements that hang together so well in this image. The straight shadows, the round can tops, the loop of the rope. The sharp texture of the ground playing against the flowing paint stains on the sides of the pails. The placement of the cans on one thirds point ‘lines’ in the image. I am not visually literate enough to better explain why I like it, but I do.

markrewald Mexican stone carving. Very nice. I would love to see how this image works in Lith, both in the current using of the term, and the older print though lithographic films, perhaps to posterize it.

MattKing – Nice use of the classical ‘thirds’ , with sharp versus unsharp working well here also. The foreground shadow of the birch laying over the linear mower lines on the field is also a nice counterpoint. The selenium gives a nice punch in the shadows.

Oxleyroad- Oh, Andrew, you take me back. I too in my youth used to ‘scrounge the tip’ for old salvageable old electronic components fro discarded chassis of tv’s and radios. I like the reference to the ‘Star Wars’ fly though. The text gives the snap to what at first blush might just otherwise be interpreted as a ‘ho hum’ photo of a populated PCB. With the star wars image in my head, I can see evil walkers looming in the upper right, here in the form of an array of what look to be trimmer resistors. At least it is a photo of a board that uses though mount components, and is therefore fixable. Good luck to trying to ever repair a SMT type board

Rob Skeotch – Love the image, and pine for the day the paper is released. Then perhaps I can use a new paper with an interesting surface, instead of hoarding all sorts of old stuff like Ansco and Zone VI from years gone by for these exchanges.

rst – Stairs near Alte Brucke. Effective use of a very neat low vantage point. A good example of the effective use of the profile of the staircase to lead your eye. The barren growth at the top, and the twisting horizontals of the lower steps are very neat as well.

rst image 2 – Alte Brucke. A very nice image of an old stone arch bridge leading to a very intriguing old European town. Oh, some day I will be in a similar place to see such images. Until then, it is post wwII suburbia images that greet my eye daily.

Rtbadman
Post modern window reflections – A neat photo- thanks for swapping me a few copies of it. I think it could be a more powerful image if it was printed on a higher contrast of paper to drop out a few of the lighter middle grey tones, and leave the ‘sky’ reflection as near totally white. Glad you are having fun with a new to you rangefinder.

Valerie
– A photo with simple composition, with a simple camera that packs a lot of punch. The flare and slight fuzziness are what makes this image talk to me of a plainer, simpler world of images to enjoy.

Two more received since my last update:

markrewald, Mexican statue. Not having been there myself I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty certain the photo does justice to the statue. Looking good! Maybe it's been asked before, but... what paper is this? It has a very nice matte surface...
rtbadman, great subject, it's so easy to think "there's nothing interesting to shoot on a business park". But there is. Very interesting shot. Good to see that you like your first rangefinder.

That's 17 out of 25 received for me. Some of you have announced a delay, so I'm sure there will be more, sooner or later. Anyway, it is/was once again a very pleasant exchange!

I received Mark Rewald's and rtbadman's cards yesterday.

Love the carving and the architectural shot is great.

So did I (well, spaced a day apart). Somehow, however, I've lost Mark's card -- but I do remember the carving as something I would be attracted to shoot as well. And I really like the graphic nature of Roger's shot.

Well, sometimes it is just nice to be the organizer and that is when Roger (rtbadman) sends out six different postcards and as organizer you get them all.

Thanks to Roger, all those different details of that building are interesting very graphic and also kind of minimalistic. Together they make up a nice series. I like all of them. That must have been a great first roll in your "new" Himatic.

Cheers

Greetings to everyone! Have reached more than 5 photos in total 11 of 25:
Mooseontheloose: finally arrived! nice shot! good shot, detail and above all feelings, good feelings. I love to see this picture in large size.
Ruediger: another pinhole, it seems that you are surrounded by bridges! beautiful landscape with a large range of gray and a special light!
Rtbadman: good photo! surface reflections always make us think of anything else! or not! just a picture that enjoy!
Mark Rewald: Your image suggests to me strength, power and beauty with a perfect tonal range!
Rob Skeoch: Good shot! I suggest loneliness and memories .... excellent image! for a good emulsion, although it would put a little more weight to the paper.
Thanks!

Rtbadman - great reflections. I thought it was a shot through stair and railway/road overpass steel guard mesh. It took a second look to see it was glass and glass. it got me so love it.

9 to go...

I received Roger's shot of the office reflection... very nice use of the lines and distorsions.
Also Kracker's "At the Fair" .... nice tones throughout this image. I like the paper as well.

Yesterday I received rtbadman's reflections. Great use of the lines and perspectives.

Today, it was Tim Gray's American Footbal view. Unusual (at least for me !) view of the Stadium, and the perspective on this giant flag is quite amazing !

Today's been a great day !!

I received my Bifrost (sci-fi mag, the best one I've ever got. Unfortunately for felloow APUGers it's in French), the expected hammers (same ones as the ones we use on the Merry Go Round). This Bifrost issue has the "Razzies" awards : the awards of the worse Sci-Fi for 2010 (I know, I'm a nasty mean guy, but I really like these !)

And then... two additional cards :

Dr Zish's rocks. I like the "dynamics" of the rocks, one could almost feel the forces that pressed them together.

Wayne Frederick's Prandegg castle, very nice perspective from an unusual point of view (at least for the castles I know).

Thanks !

Tim's NFL image has found its way to Bangkok! - Love the perspective; have always wanted to get to a game, but never had the chance to do so.
Great timing as my team has just snuck into the AFC Championship! :D
