By your comments some of you have correctly identified the subject my card, and thoughtfully didn't give the game away  So, as this round is coming to a close, for those still wondering it's called a Crookes Radiometer. When placed in sunlight (or other source of IR radiation) the vanes spin round (amazingly quickly in direct sunlight). Maybe I should use it for metering IR film :D

The guessing game has given me an idea for a future round.

Thank you to all who have sent me a card, they're all excellent in various ways. I don't think I can find time to do justice to commenting on each individually so will try to comment as they arrive in the next round.
I took the pile from this round and last to show a fellow APUGger friend last weekend and he expressed a wish to join in the next round, so take that as an independent vote of approval !

Since my last update, things have slowed down a bit; I received two cards in the last 2 weeks:

Adrian D, cement mixer, great tonality, nice subject. I'm sure the mixer has seen better days. It has a bit of that "Flintstones" look now; no perfect spheres or circles, but... well... imperfect ones.
BirgerA, rock and water, a landscape (seascape) turned into an abstract. Great shapes, shades, contrast.
Thank you both!

Also a thank you for those who have taken the time to comment on (or at least mention the receival of) my card.

A landscape photograph from kraker is interesting because he "broke the rules". Jacco placed one of the horizons in the middle of the print, and at the same point divided the light and dark portions of the photo. It really works quite well. Goes to show that photographic rules are meant to be broken.

Thanks, Darwin. You are right, I indeed broke the rules; I thought it worked quite well and I'm glad you agree. Besides, I couldn't get a better framing than this, so... the rule just had to be broken :D.

Trust me Matt, Victoria has more than one snowplough!!! It's a whiteout blizzard right now. I have to drive to my neighbourhood video store and I'm a little scared.

Thank you very much Kraker for your beautiful infrared postcard! What a treat! I also like the fact that the image is broken up into these light and dark areas. It's very striking.
I'm not on his list but he still sends me a postcard every round!!! That is so awesome. Got a special infrared coming your way, Kraker!
I will comment on all the great cards I have received when I take some time out!! Working like a mad person right now...barely enough time to eat and sleep and feed my son....He will have to learn how to cook! I'm even working on New Year's Day.

Kate:

1) Be careful, and be safe!
2) You have to remember, it was the 80s when I last lived in Victoria - I think I knew this anyways, but I'm glad to have it confirmed that the snowplough inventory has improved since then.

The snow is falling here too. If it helps, I'm thinking about you and all the others in the Victoria area, not least because my parents live up the Saanich peninsula from Victoria, and it's hard for them to deal with the elements.

I find the card from Valerie very interesting because there are lots of messages that cam be construed from this photo.

The card fro PVia is my favorite of this batch. The composition is simple and elegant. Most of the tonal range of the paper is used, and it is Kodabromide. A paper I used almost exclusively in the 1970's when I set-up my first darkroom.

I have heard of the "Cookie Monster", now I need to beware of the "Gobstopper Dinosaur". Thanks rwyoung.

The card from Cara took me a while to see what it was photograph of, then the watter lily reflection "popped out" at me. This photo actually works well as either a vertical of horizontal.

Thanks to all for the fantastic photographs. It is so cool to see how others "see the world", and what captures their imagination.

Happy Holidays.

Just want you guys to know there's a 4x6 speed easel for sale in the classifieds here. I'm not affiliated with the seller. I picked up one on ebay about 6-9 months ago and it's FANTASTIC for printing off 50 cards real quick...

I received cards from PVia and Cara today. Pvia's still life has such clean tones, and I always like raindrops on water. Two great cards.

Happy Christmas all!

Received Cara's water lily recently. Took me a while to figure out which is up, down and sideways, and I'm still trying to figure out the light! In any case, a lovely image, and great tones in the flower.

Somewhere in the last two weeks (what with Christmas and all I tend to lose track of which day is which) I received Cara's water lily. It's a great picture. Like johnnywalker it took me some time to figure out which way is up; it works upside-down as well (a telltale sign of a good composition, I was taught). Very nice, thanks! And... no need to apologise for being delayed, it was still on time!

I’ve been really bad...

I have received all sorts of wonderful cards in Postcard exchange 15, and I haven’t commented.

So I’ll try to make up for it a bit here. Here are comments on the 22 cards I’ve received so far:

bdial -“Full Moon” - a great Halloween image
BirgerA -“Rock & Water” - I like the textures in the water
Black Dog - “Christmas Pudding” - very pagan
bmccarthy007 - “Big Sandy” - nice slice of performance
Buster6X6 - “Buster” - nothing like a true buddy, and a great print
Cara - “Lily Pads” - another great water photograph, with flowers too!
crispinuk - “Glass Envelope” - very retro, and a wonderful “6 elephant” print
drpsilver - “Pines in Fog” - very moody, and subtle
erikg - “Mohawk Village et al” - as others have commented, a great headstone and McDonalds juxtaposition
Jon King - “Diversion” - I agree, it is a gem, and a very nice print too
kraker - “Dutch Landscape” very nice use of the Ilford SFX, and another nice print
Mark Fisher - “Carnival Ride” - great abstract image, and a print with great depth
Mick Fagan - “Nancy” - an impressive portrait, nicely printed
mikeg - “Stokesay Castle” I always like castles, and the addition of headstones makes this very interesting
nyx - “Lith Cables” - this lith print is wonderful - and the patterns of the cables are great
Pete H - “Chips & Mayonnaise” - a great slice of life
Rob Skeoch - “Rob in the West” nice use of the SFX200 - and a very moody print
rst - “Tanglewood” - like the patterns
sly - “The Head Gardener” - colour! - and a great grouping
Tim Gray - “Paris Puddle” - an interesting crime scene photo!
Valerie - “Talk to the Hand” - a fascinating portrait - is it a self portrait? - nice print too
wazza - “Eucalypts” - wonderful and graphic image

As best as I can tell, I’ve yet to receive cards from the following:
david b, gr82bart, mooseontheloose, sage, stan160, Síle

If you have sent one to me, it is possible I’ve mislaid it, so don’t worry about sending another. You should post it in the exchange gallery though.
If you haven’ sent it, or you recently sent it, I look forward to getting it!

Thanks everyone for a great exchange.

Hi All , I have been really amiss in not sending out mine yet, got the perfect excuse mind, moved house over Xmas to somewhere smaller and thereby lost my darkroom to the demon curse of recession, can't figure which I am more annoyed about my loosing my job or darkroom!!! smirks

But fear not I will get them printed just need to take over the local camera club darkroom for a day --

Mine are now all sent out and should be arriving shortly, though I did notice that some of the notes I wrote was smudging, apparently the ink I used on some of the cards isn't waterproof  . If you need another let me know as I did make some extras. Hopefully my next round will go a lot smoother from everything I learned on this one.

edit: People I haven't recieved cards from:
Valerie, Sile, stan160, Simplicius, mooseontheloose, hermit, gr82bart, EricMac, David B, BWKate.
Hopefully I haven't just misplaced any, if you already sent me one let me know and I'll keep looking for it.
