A new card arrived today, from Andorra this time.
I therefore believe that it is PepMiro (Josep) who has sent me two nice swans.

Thanks

Out they went last Saturday. Only signed up for 20 this time because I've just got too many things going on right now! This is both bad and good I suppose. Bad because I'll only get 20 this time round. Good because it means I'm not sitting around bored.

I'll post a scan of the card in a week or so.

I've gotten three or four cards so far but I don't have the list here. Thanks to all, this round and previous rounds!

Received Mick Fagan's postcard of his houseguest. I think it's a photo of Jesse the pocket rocket, right? She looks a little more relaxed in this image. Very nice portrait. I'm not so good at portraits so I do appreciate a good one. I would like to start taking portraits and there is certainly lots of inspiration here on Apug!

I received three more cards yesterday, two today.

The card from Colin (photobizzz) is of interest because I have never seen this part of the world (outside news reports). Thank you for the card and your efforts in Iraq.
The card from Todd Haines (astroclimb) strikes me as very moody. I like the silhouette with detail. Wonderfully done.
The card from Rachelle (mooseontheloose) is a wonderful testament to HIE.
The card form Josep (PepMiro) of two swans is so peaceful.
Rwyoung's card harkens back to a time before lenses and glass. Just a hole in a peice of foil.

Thanks to all for a wonderful round so far.

Regards,
Darwin

P.S. Is anyone from this exchange attending Foto3 in June? I will be attending all three days.

Josep's photo arrived today...beautiful scene of two swans, almost looks like a vintage print.

I have to admit that I didn't know where Andorra was, so I looked it up and started reading. Fascinating!

Posted all my cards Monday. Received six wonderful cards over the last week and a half from:

PeteH Blustery Oslo harbor
PeteS double exposure in VT. Get's more interesting every time I look at it
Darwin's Door great tonal range
Mick Fagan portrait of his attractive house guest
Buster6X6's Barn still life. Excellent tone and texture.
Black Dog's Intriguing lighting in shot of his house.

It seems the cards get better every round and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest.
Thanks,

Recveived 3 cards in the last couple of days:
Mick Fagan's Jesse. I'm impressed that you & she have the patience for large format portraits.
Rachelle's Alsatian castle. Dark moody castle set against bright landscape. RIP HIE.
Josep Miro's swans. I like the tonality. What paper is it?

Many thanks!

Got 2 more today:
Doug's Madison Square park, the HIE is great for this shot. Sadly, the post office kinda scratched out the center, where the two people are, with their sorting machines.
FM2N's church. That tree looks great.

Well, the portrait of Jesse in the backyard has created interest. I have received a few requests via email, some via pm, even one telephone call from overseas, as well as some very nice comments from this thread. I’m flattered, thankyou very much. Most wished to know, how this portrait was done.

Jesse was one of our houseguests early last year and late last year. We (my wife and I) have a rule, we always photograph houseguests. Some houseguest pictures are great, some are not so great, and some are pure records.

The third photo session with Jesse, was on a very warm summer day just before Christmas, a few days before she was leaving. She had some ideas, I had some ideas and my wife had ideas.

I ran three rolls of film through my F3 over a period of about an hour with different lenses and set-ups. The final part of the day was with a 4x5 and we shot 4 sheets of TMax 100, this picture was the final sheet and also the final picture of a very successful day.

We (all three of us) really had a fun time, final pictures are nearly always the best, everyone is relaxed, and we all know the routine. With LF pictures that include people, I find it is nice to have a situation where the subject can relax and be in a position whereby they can hold still easily during the exposure and not move too much between setting focus, and tripping the shutter.

That is why the picture has her resting on a garden table. The light is filtered sunlight coming through the trees in the background, there is no reflector, I let the background highlights blow out and burnt them in a bit in the darkroom.

Shen Hao 4x5 with a Fujinon 150 lens, TMax 100 1/8 of a second @ f22. There was a ½ stop bellows factor. The film was exposed in the landscape format, my prints are landscape, but this paper size requires me to print this in a portrait format.

Film was developed in D76 1+1 (rotary).

The print itself was interesting, it is a straight print, but there was a 1/16 of a stop difference between a good print and a bad print. If I printed 1/16 of a stop more, her face was perfect, but her hair went really dark and detail became like that immediately above her eyes, almost black.

By pulling the exposure 1/16 of a stop, her hair retained detail, but the highlights on her cheekbones and across the bridge of the nose are almost lost and blown out. This is the print, all of you have!

Mick.

Ps:- I'll add the picture to my gallerie shortly.

Rob Young's pinhole fencepost arrived today. Nice chunky rope and wood textures.

Thank you very much! I have been having lots of fun making cameras and building conversions for "real" cameras to do pinhole. Been kinda rough winter so good projects for indoors. Bring on spring!

It has been having a wonderful February, coming home from work to find another postcard or two, while realizing I really needed to pick an image to print and get my cards done.

Well, they are done. Most have been posted today and the last few will go tomorrow. It was my first time using something other than Ilford postcard paper. I haven't seen many fiber prints so I hope they travel well.

I've received 19 cards to date. In no particular order:

Akki14 - great cyanotype, I can never get my whites white! Black Dog - Nice effect with the limited depth of field. Buster6x6 - A nice composition of ordinary, old objects. I agree that it could look great bigger. Dietmar - a great atmospheric image mark Fisher -a night shot at the fair, I like it Mick Fagan - going back to the well, huh? A very good portrait PVia - great textures PepMiro - I like the lighting on the swans head and the simple, elegant composition PeteH - The contrast between the mast and the wind whipped flags works for me astroclimb - I like the cross in profile - they look different around the country, but always noticeable PeterS - A nice double exposure hal9000 - I like how the building front frame the wireskcc008 - I like the simple lighting and the tones - one of my favorites this round mooseontheloose - A nice composition and use of IR. Good job keeping detail in the vineyards. ozphoto - Intentional or not, the light leaks give it a wonderful toy camera effect rwyoung I like the texture on the wood and ropes tlsid - the water nicely implies motion
wazza - great texture on the driftwood

Some nice surprises in my post today after getting back from overseas.

Postcards from PeteH , PepMiro, Todd Haines (astroclimb), Jake Williams (Black Dog), Peter S - that postcard stock has worked a treat!, PaulVia - can almost hear the bamboo making it's particular "knocking" sound, Mick Fagan, Simon Frizza and Heather (akki14) - my favorite card so far for this round.

Won't be seeing any further arrivals until May now, so I'm looking forward to a nice collection when I get back from Japan.

I'm amazed...

this is my first time and I was really worried that the postcards just would not travel well, especially across the globe. But they show up in great shape, and the images are wonderful:

wonderful buildings in Olso by PeteH
a "nauseating" county fair ride by MarkF--sorry, I don't go on those rides anymore!
Wow, what a great shot of Ayuttaha by Ozphoto
PeterS's Vermont double exposure certainly captures the feeling of the eastern US wonderfully
Aussie photo and postcard by Warren is a great composition
MickF's portrait of his houseguest, excellent!
I am reminded of a shot of Weston's workbench by buster6x6 garage-sale photo, I can't help but scour the image to pick up more fine detail
MarkW, nicely done image on HIE, wow, I wanna try that too!

Thanks to all!
