I've been feeling better about my progress with cyanotype prints and wanted to share my latest renditions of two previously shared prints, after additional rabbit holes and such.

This one I toned with mushroom coffee

mushroom coffee

You can take the man out of Travis Co. ….

Very nice work, both—the first ought to get you thinking about Pt/pd, and while I usually don’t care for untoned cyanotypes, especially for landscapes, the original “blueprint“ really works for me, especially with the coating “inside” the negative.

Haha....thank you. I am actually not a fan of anything mushroom at all. When I was shopping for instant coffee for toning I though it might be a good one over standard black coffee.

I am currently also liking the coating inside the negative. It's a much cleaner look for my print choices thus far.

From this winter at Sunken Pond. Usually I capture this on film, this time on digital, converted to B&W.

Another cyanotype print - 11x14. Toned this one with some sage and pine bark that I collected from the back yard.

Another cyanotype print

Digging this one as well—how you’re holding shadow detail is a revelation for me. Btw, if you’re going the anthotype/botanicals route, did you happen to see Mary Thomas’ oak-gall toned cyanotype over on FB? No doubt expert lighting and technique all around, but the acutance of that print was fascinating.

I did see that print by Mary and it melted my brain! I also saw someone else post it without citing her at all....

I'm pulling the print from the bleaching bath the moment I detect it starts to affect the deeper shadows and rinsing as quickly as possible. I've also gone down to using very little sodium carbonate as it appears a little(half teaspoon) goes a long way with this classic cyanotype formula. What might also be aiding is that after the pre soak in water, I do a soak in the toner for 10 minutes, then the bleaching for about 30-35 seconds, then back in the toner till I feel it's enough(anywhere from 10-30 minutes).

Fantastic image. Have you tried printing this as a Kallitype as well?

I’ve not but Kallitypes may be the next process I explore. Though the though of starting over from scratch is a bit numbing, since I’m just now feeling comfortable with cyanotypes.

I like the roots cascading into the water.
