Hi,

I love to shoot medium format, but since I've been in Hawaii I temporarily gave up film for digital. It's hard to get the right supplies on the island. I am taking a trip across America this September and have decided that I want to shoot the whole journey on film. I'm moving back to the mainland and decided that this was the right time to see what I've always wanted to see across the country. When I arrive in North Carolina I plan on starting up my own darkroom, and printing the images from my trip. I've decided that this is the direction I want to go in my life. I'm going to devote my craft to learning new classic photography techniques, and keeping them alive.

Photography is my passion! I've been shooting for a long time, and have never had as much fun as when I was in the darkroom. My favorite part of the photographic process is seeing the images that I've created come to life in front of my face. I have decided that I want to do this every day. I need to shoot film and be in the darkroom. I've missed it so much while I've been away. That's why I'm Dead Link Removed my new career path and looking for support from like minded photographers. I know that I want to get up every day and either take a hike and shoot the wonderful things in the world, and develop those images in my darkroom. I want to see what I've seen come to life, and I want other people to see it. I plan on opening a gallery space in Asheville, NC where I will set up a darkroom and showcase the works that I've created.

Come along with me on my journey and see how I see America! If you can, contribute to my project and spread the word about my work. I love the art of photography, and I respect how powerful an image can be. I want my work to resonate with people that understand photography as well as people that just see pictures. I want to capture people's imaginations and instill a sense of wonder back into the world. I encourage you to follow me on my website www.mywildamerica.com and I appreciate any words of wisdom.

Sincerely,
Christian Farner

That sounds great! Love to have you aboard.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff!

I'm trying to decide what gear I want for this upcoming trip. I love the grain and feel of Adox film. I have also used one or two rolls of Fomapan, and of course the Ilfords and T-Maxs. What are your favorite B&W films? I'm looking into using the Fujifilm B&W. Have you used this? What I understand is that it is 3000 ISO, is this right? Is that what you meter for? Do you know of the best resources for slide development on the East Coast?

If you have suggestions for forums with anwsers to these questions I would love your input. Thanks again for welcoming me into your community!

Any words of wisdom. Me, giving out my wisdom. That's beyond even my own fears. :D OK, I'll give it a shot. Don't do it on any grant money. You'll respect yourself more, and the work will deserve same.
So, you'll be ending up here in NC. That's good. We need better quality influx of people than what we've been getting. Asheville is a sightseeing based economy more than any other. I would suppose most of the mills are covered in vines by now. The NC mountains towns I'm sure are mostly that way since the economy left. I'm sure you'll be one of many people who open up a niche business. That's usually the second life of a dead town. Some make it, most don't. Don't expect Mayberry. Good luck.

Thanks Tom! From what I understand West Asheville is supporting a big art push. That is what I'm looking to find a niche in. I think at some point its about finding the right gallery with people that have the same goals as you. As for me, right now my goal is to produce great images and place those images in homes with people that appreciate them. I don't expect it to be easy, in fact I prefer to do things the hard way. I think that's what draws me to analogue photography. I will take any good luck that is wished upon me.

For your own good, don't listen to the propaganda put up by the "arts" liberals. They're usually kooks who simply have found a way to milk the community chest and make themselves appear as elites in their own minds. Watch your wallet when you get involved with that crowd. Remember, the busiest parking lot in most any NC rural county is the Dept of Social Services. I'm sure Buncombe County is no different. This ain't Hawaii by any stretch of imagination. Culture shock 101. I got it when I left Charlotte after 35 years to buy land in the middle of Nowhere, NC. !7 years later and I'm still culture shocked. I suppose the moral of all my writing is to learn to manage and handle your money, because you're fixing to turn off the spigot it comes out of and live by your wits. GL, friend. Sincerely, HTF

I hogged the treat and layed it on pretty thick last night when I saw what this guy from Hawaii was fixing to do. I ended up sleeping on it, not terribly peacefully. I do hope I tooted a warning horn loud enough to get through. Anyone doing something like that needs to have a good financial portfolio already in place, especially coming from a place like Hawaii. "Green Acres" was a comedy program, but it's also a horror series, and more truth than fiction. Don't plunge yourself into poverty. The first couple of years it's an adventure, but the years grind on when you've stagnated your income. Best regards.
