I believe in this case it is the diction police.

I don't know if you've been following ORWO threads here but a lot of us are waiting for delivery on film we paid for in July, 2022. Someone who waited a _whole_ month for delivery does not get to use word "finally". That's "immediately" in ORWO speak. Orders for July 2022 are delayed. Slightly.

I received three rolls of NC500 ordered through ORWO’s website in late June of last year about a month ago. I live in Boston, but the order was shipped from the UK. From what I’ve read on here, there doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason to their back order shipping. Had I known it and the somewhat mysterious NC400 would be available retail before the orders would even be shipped, well…

also- I did get three rolls of nc500 still that I ordered back in July a couple weeks ago- but it got sent by freestyle photographic... without any boxes or dx codes.
MEANWHILE... I'd semi forgotten about that order and ordered some 500 and 400 from freestyle, and those came in boxes... with DX codes.

Although no one can seem to figure out what’s going on with ORWO with back order shipping, at least they are making an effort and shipping, regardless of how chaotic. So I guess we do have to give them kudos for that. This can’t be easy for them.

My main unanswered question is what these color films really are, and much of that confusion has come, at one time or another, from ORWO itself. Is the native process actually ECN2 as ORWO once stated? C-41 as ORWO now claims? Or actually an older E6 Agfachrome formulation as the Cinema Repository website believes, tweaked somewhat to give acceptable results cross-processed in C-41? Also, it appears NC500 is daylight balanced and NC400 is a tungsten balanced emulsion, but nowhere does ORWO even mention that. Granted, most can be corrected in post-processing but, gee, wouldn’t that be nice for the photographer to know? I guess I don’t understand why ORWO can’t release some basic clarifying technical info along with their marketing hype.

here's what I know- nc500 was developed as a c41 emulsion, but it can be developed in ecn2.
what I can tell about nc 400 (per freestyle listing), is that it's similar to nc500, but finer grain and a bit more saturated colors.

I had ordered a 100'roll of 35mm P400 V3 film and they mistakenly sent an unperforated roll. I notified them of that and they sent me a proper perforated roll from Germany (FilmoTec) quite quickly so no complaints from me. The jury is still out on the quality of this film but it is extremely curly longitudinally and trying to find a proper film speed/developing time as the box speed is not the best.

What does the Massive Developing Chart have to say on these Orwo films?

Sounds like it used to be a lot easier to order ORWO film direct from FilmoTec by email, invoice, wire transfer. It was shipped within a few days after payment made it through. But that was only bulk film, no pre-loaded options.

That is the extent of what ORWO’s marketing is publicly saying. The general consensus thus far from the limited testing, mainly on a cinematography website, is that NC400 is the preferred of the two, but of course they are looking at it from the perspective of their field. The unfiltered color balance of the two are very different, however. NC500 appears fairly normal and neutral in daylight, but NC400 is very cold, much like an unfiltered tungsten-balanced film would appear if shot in daylight.

Yeah, it's not quite full on color photography weather yet, so I haven't tested my rolls yet (other than some snip tests for e6 crossing), so I can't say for sure what's what- though I haven't seen nc400 for sale in cinefilm.

I will say that most of that did look a bit under exposed- but where are you supposed to get nc400 in cine rolls?

Good question. It’s another of the ‘Mysteries of ORWO’. I’m sure it will pop up again out of the ether. I find it odd that ORWO’s NA own website seems to be out of stock on much of what sites like Freestyle and others have in stock of their product. I guess it just adds to the mystique

In any event, extrapolating a bit and assuming all things being equal (dangerous assumption, I know), I would think NC400/NC500 have the same characteristics regardless of format, so that’s where I’m getting the color temperature differences of the two.

I am not sure if the folks (folk) who are running ORWOna are still in the loop. they were mostly providing Black and White Cine film, Brought in from Filotec, and the thrust of the New ORWO company seems to be color still film that can also be processed by a movie lab... I did belive that the older ORWO movie stocks like N74 were NOT made by Inoviscoat, http://www.inoviscoat.de while the new firm seems to be joined at the Hip to that source.

Yes that is what is stated on their web site. Most of their information that I found was written in German so that kind of leaves me out but I see that it should be exposed at 250 ISO NOT the box speed 400 that I was using. Only a few developing times were listed in DD so I used the ID-11 @ 1-1 and saw that wasn't the proper time but now it will be at 250 ISO and also experimenting with some sort of Pyro developer.

It translates the website but not the spec & application pages I messaged FilmoTec about that and they are going to look into it as the only thing I understood from them was the 250 ISO.
