Orthochromatic 35mm film comparison / which developer is the best ?

.....I've an idea what's coming from you now. I would probably
answer first : it depends.

I am particularly interested in these 3 films :

- Ilford ortho plus ......ISO 80 - my speed ISO 25

- Adox CMS 20 II ...~ ISO 20 - my speed ~ ISO 10

- Rollei ORTHO 25......ISO 25 - my speed ~ ISO 10

Has anyone had good results with pyro developers with Ilford?

Next issue : The CMS 20 II is orthopanchromatic and there is a suitable developer from ADOX - but I don't want that.

How did you actually do in the past with document film?

ADOX wouldn't have reinvented the wheel
every time, would it ?

I prefer to schedule the developer by myself from raws on a recipe.

Any suggestions ?

Originally it was intended as a microfilm that was developed to a high contrast, it was never intended be a pictorial camera film. Thus the need for special developers that can lower the contrast to bring it into the pictorial range.

Just from my mind, how does it work if you shoot with overexposure and pull development - the contrasts become
weaker ?

- Ilford ISO 6
- ADOX ISO 2
- ROLLEI ISO 6.……...??? (just theoretically)

If it's only 25 for you and that works for you then fine there's no more to be said but it just sees very low given that Greg Davis in his video about it confirmed that in D76 it was a genuine 80 speed film and from what I recall from others none had it as low as 25 of even mentioned that it was not a box speed fim

Thank you pentaxuser, I had experimented with extremely
diluted D76 solution ( factor 1/4 as min. recomanded around 35 min. temperated - for sure D76 died in between)

The results were pretty flat, ( simple low cost Film APX100),
but I have thought about it : if necessary contrast defraction
is also possible.

Beutler would also be worth considering - or not?

The very slow speed isn't a problem for me.

Only to a point. A high contrast developer doesn't be come a low contrast developer simply by diluting it, you need different chemical reactions to produce satisfactory results.

Inn the case of the Adox CMS-20, every test I have seen shows that the dedicated Adox developer does produce the best results. See the video Andrew made:

Thank you, i've no doubt : ADOX ADOTECH ist a great developer, with best results.
Also the Rollei RLC is suitable, Spur Nanospeed is also able
to do the job.....but I want my own.

investigated ( with the help of your video )

POTA DEVELOPER would be an alternative concerning CMS II

A pure phenidone developer - quite simple.

Perhaps there may be other alternatives with
developers of the same principle (without second agent)

If the box speeds genuinely differ then why would Ilford and Rollei not differ even if your EI speeds for both are not the box speeds

Yes of course, thanks.
But to be honest I don't like XTOL that much unlike D76.
And even if you had the right formula for XTOL, you still
need to much medicine in my opinion.!

thanks, I only can say that I remember a similar issue with
the speed of ROLLEI 80s but I am not so sure.
May be that was in a different context.
