Is this still a thread about Oppenheimer? 😝 After seeing the film version at IMAX I’ll be looking forward to seeing it on the small screen in my home. It was a good film but the IMAX experience was not for me. The resolution and detail of the projected film though - wow.

I wasn't sure what IMAX was when this thread started and had to look it up. Pretty cool technology. A friend who travels a bunch and goes to lots of movies told me that this film was really good in IMAX. I asked where he was when he saw it and he said here. Huh? I didn't know we had an IMAX theater here. Who knew? I guess I was confusing IMAX with OMNI theaters, that latter which I saw in St. Paul, MN a couple decades ago.

It's worth going to an IMAX if you're curious to see what's possible with medium format film projection. Be careful to stay away from the front rows or you'll spend the movie looking up, down, left and right. The screens are large.

2/3rds of the way back in the theater is supposed to be the sweet spot; the way the cinematographer saw it.

That is, if the old rules for theater construction were followed...

I belive that the idea of IMAX was that the screen would be your entire field of view. At least that was the idea when the CineSphere at Ontario Place first opened with IMAX projector serial number 001

I think that was the idea behind Cinerama too. I saw a few of those in Los Angeles back in the day: 2001: A Space Odyssey, How The West Was Won, and Battle of the Bulge come to mind. I also saw a non-Cimerama Fantasia at the Cinerama Dome screen that was pretty cool.

yes, it took may tries apparently to figure out how to get that 15 perf film to move at 24 FPS. without the Camera turning into a film shredder.

I think the first IMAX film was "North of Superior" which shows the sort of shots they had in mind.

note the 19 minute run time! which is proably as far as they thought folks could take in the imersive experience.

The idea was borne of the difficulties in making "A Place to Stand"
which took a LOT of composite printing by "Fiilm Effects of Hollywood"

note the title of "North of Superior" starts with what would have been a normal screen size, and suddenly expands to fill the entire screen.

A place to Stand was shown at "Expo 67, I belive in 70mm 5 perf, with a six channel sound track.

The IMAX theater in Dayton, Ohio on Wright-Patterson AFB plays a film called, "Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag" that has the sensitive ones fleeing the theater with motion sickness...

yes, there were LOTS of "Venue" IMAX films made, using the format for Features is something that the Nolan generation has invented.

wonder if the theatre has the sort of "Seat Shakers" that were inveted for Expo 86.

Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio used to have an IMAX theater - I'd seen several traditional IMAX films there growing up The screen was huge and you felt immersed in the experience. It was demolished circa 2015.

Unfortunately, things seemed to have changed. At the Crocker Park Regal theater in Westlake, Ohio, I'd seen The Force Awakens (Star Wars) in 3D IMAX... the screen is what passes for "large" today, but was more of a standard size by size by late 1990s standards (which is small compared to 70s and 80s regular screens).

My 75" 4K TV still can show 3D although films are not made with 3D anymore. Some individuals film in 3D and download it to YouTube where you can watch usually travelogue-type shows.
