If I were traveling with a light load and not shooting MF, for my "one" camera I would take a Nikon N-75 with a Tamron f/3.8 28mm to 300mm zoom Tamron lens for color print film, a Nikon F-100 with a f/3.5 28mm to 200mm zoom Nikon lens for black & white film, and a Nikon f/2.8 20mm to 35mm zoom Nikon [heavy metal] lens for the two to share. The N-75 and F-100 have been together for years and they are happy to lend their lenses to each other.

Ideally a Pentax 6x7 with 45mm, 105mm & 165mm lenses. As this is in the '35mm' section, a Pentax LX with FA20-35mm/4, FA43mm/1.9 & M135/3.5 lenses.

Film wise, FP4+, HP5+, the odd roll of Delta 3200 & Kodachrome 64 (complete with a TARDIS).

Though I'm a a bit late coming to this thread, I too would take the Pentax 6x7 and probably just the 90mm, and the 55mm. That's about all I can shoulder comfortably. Why this camera? Because I sold all my 35mm gear. Ha!

If money was no object, I would pay someone to wait in line for me for everything from airports and customs to museum lines and bathrooms.

My best photography memories were located some 34 years ago. I was about to be shipped out to Spain, and I felt a need to take a camera. I purchased two Nikon EM bodies, a batch of lenses, auto-winders, tripod, filters, hard case, and off I went. Sadly, while going to school in Germany and England, gypsies broke into the farm house I was renting. They stole all my gear, minus the camera body and 50mm lens that I took with me. That one body and lens served me until 1996, which is when I purchased my first digital. With all the cameras I have had since, I still think that little camera was a gem. If I were tempted to use 35mm again . . .

I'm really an slr (GG) kind of guy. I have this need to see "through the lens".

If I didn't have a reason to take a wide-angle LF camera, I'd pick a folding medium format camera for the convince of roll film:
Plaubel Makina, Zeiss Ikonta, one of the Fuji's ei GS645 or GF670
I could be happy with just about any of the above and they are so portable.

If money is no object then F6 with Nikon lenses. If using current equipment then F5 Nikon. Since around the world trip would be a once in a lifetime trip I would also leave the digital option open.

Just one 35mm camera? While part of me would want to fall back on the Leica M6 which I know very very well, I think just for fun I'd do something different like the Minolta TC1: Small enough that I'd likely have it with me when others are leaving their bigger outfits behind.

It's a very hard decision. I don't have mich problem with lenses (maybe don't even need 3 for 35mm).... But, IMO the problem is to have a backup body (as I'm afraid to remain with a broken camera in my hands) and reducing the total weight of the gears.... I can't stand anymore wandering around with tons of cameras and lenses...... Actually I'd rather be more concentrated in the choice of the right subjects to shot than the cameras to play with.... :wink:
In that sense, a couple (one as backup or for different film Iso or color film) of 6X6 folding cameras (I have a good Agfa Isolette III with uncoupled rangefinder and she could be the choice) would be the perfect choice for a world round trip. Great I.Q. lightweighted, very compact (pocketable indeed) and fast enough to operate. The alternative could be a coupled rangefinder (E.g. a Super Ikonta and the simpler Agfa as backup).

Regarding 35mm I'll have to decide between my Nikkormat Ftn (and another as backup) with 24mm, 50mm and 135 or 105mm (I'll need to buy the 24 as I have the 28 and the 105 as I have the 135) or my Leica R-E (plus a backup body) with Elmarit 24mm, Summicron 50mm and Vario Elmar 35-70 (I'll need to buy the Elmarit)...... :smile:

I can tell you from personal experience right now I am traveling the whole United States and Canada as a truck driver and I brought my EOS system with d*****l Canon 5D and A2 and have done well. Lenses are 28-70 Canon kit, 70-210 f4 and 50mm Mk.I

In retrospect I should have brought my Mamiya RB67 outfit but if we're talking 135 format my Nikon FM, FG, 28 Quantaray, 35/2.8, 50 1.4, 85/2 and 105/2.5 would have fit the bill well.

This was a fun thread. It should be fun again.

I recently traveled back to Austria again and it was my first time traveling internationally with film. I think my personal choice for this question would be Canon F1N w/ FD 20-35mm f3.5L, FD 50mm f1.2L for sure. Maybe add in the FD 85mm f1.2L if I'm not concerned about packing light.

Just a fine pinhole camera, using roll film and multi format like 6x6, 6x9 and 6x12.

Or my Olympus PEN-FT (half frame) with one lens. Makes multiple-negative-panorma-images too:

Or just my Widelux F7 panorama camera. No batteries needed, just lots of 135 film.

I spent two weeks in Spain with my wife. I had my Olympus OM setup with me, and additionally my Moskva-2. I think I could've done just as well with only the Moskva and Ikophot light meter.

Went to post, reread the threads - dang! TheFlyingCamera said it all for me, took the words right out of my mouth. Very few can claim to have done that. Well done, lad!


Now I have to rethink this a bit...


In 1973 I went to Asia, my first trip,with an almost new Rollei 3.5E TLR, a lens hood, a few filters, and 40 rolls of 120 Tri-X. I had 40 rolls of Ektachrome 64, which everyone used then, but left it at home by accident. There I was, in Bali, Indonesia, in THAT glorious light. With ASA 400 film. Yoiks!


Twelve countries in five months. Mostly in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Saigon (the rest of Vietnam being "off limits" that year, altho' I made it upcountry to Dalat, but was sent back in a convoy which was shot at during a night race over the Dalat hills). Ten days in Japan cost a third of my travel budget, but oh, the beauty. Sri Lanka was a nightmare, a corrupt immigration officer wanted money and caused so much angst at the airport, I vowed to never go back (and I haven't). Shot the 40 rolls and 100+ more. Sold hundreds of images. In the '70s the media markets were hot for Asian photos, nowadays you can barely give the stuff away. Times pass, things change.


In 1993 I was in Indonesia for six months, researching a book. I had a Nikon Photomic F (horrible things, Photomics), a 50mm f/2, a lens hood, and a backup Weston Master III meter which did most of my metering. Again shot madly and sold a lot. The good old days.


This year I'm back on the road, to Brunei, Sarawak, Malaysia, Singapore, Kalimantan. I'm older, but I don't seem to have learned a lot about traveling light with photo gear. For color, I' using - one of those newfangled Nikons we don't like to talk about in this forum, with 24, 28, 50 and 85 lenses. For B&W, I had a Fuji GA645wi, which underwent a Sudden Death Experience during an architectural shoot and it seems can't be revived, a circuit board failure, no parts to be had, ah well! I'm considering its replacement. A Fuji GS645w seems likely.


This year, as if having undergone a rebirth pf sorts, I'm shooting more film and less 'D-word'. With film, I psych myself to shoot less, compose with greater care, and I try to apply a little nous to my approach to the subjects. Like my mate TFC, I'm using Tri-X and Ektar 100 or Portra 160, along with whatever films I find along the way. There is now film available in Asia, unlike the dismal situation in the past ten years. The film "wheel" has come a full circle. We are back into more enlightened times.


The pleasure of having muted film colors and not garish Disneyland-D acrylics satisfies me. Fortunately, my publisher client shares my passion for film, as long as I do the scans...


Money being no object, I would still use the camera equipment I have come to know and love in my long life - the Rolleiflex, my Nikkormats, the Nikon F I still own (less the Photomic), Fuji GA, a Contax G1 and lenses - and spend more on travel and creature comforts. Forty years ago I went everywhere by public bus and the basic backpacker's life suited me. Now middle range hotels, good beds, wifi, healthy food, tipples in moderation, and other civilised basic comforts appeal more. But the travel is everything. The cameras merely come along for the ride - and the fun. (A small complaint, carrying all that film is a pain!)

Well, I did go on such a trip. I'm not lacking for equipment, but I like to travel light - very light. What did I take? My Pentax SP500 with 50/2 lens. That's it.


Actually, I took just two cameras:

- the Pentax SP500 with Super Takumar 55/2
- an Olympus XA2

Fun thread. Well, from someone who has never traveled much at all but is multitalented and can take crummy pictures with any equipment.......here goes.

I like my lightweight and compact cameras so I'd take my Pen F (although I doubt it would hold up to a lot of use) and the four primes I have for it, a 20 f3.5, 25 f4, 38 f1.8 and 100 f3.5, yes, that and a bunch of TMax.
Oh, and there are a few accessories to haul along, cable release, small manual flash, X1, Y2 and R25 filters, compact table tripod, notebook and ball point pens.
That said, true story;
Back around 1998 our friend Kay, just over 80 at the time and with arthritic hands went on her "dream trip" around the Mediterranean and Middle East. She needed a camera and couldn't load even the modern P&S models. So I suggested 'single use' cameras. As a small gift we bought her a 3 pack of Kodak's with flash from Costco and she bought another couple of dozen. She proved to be a natural photo journalist and wrote brief notes about the places she went, people she met, and the pictures she took of them. I'd say about 90% of her shots were good and she would separate her notes and attach them to each camera as she finished the roll. Kay didn't know an f-stop from a door stop but she put together a very interesting and quite fine photo album of her trip.

I wish I had one half of her natural talent.
