One Camera Setup Around the World? What would you bring?

If you could bring one camera setup with you around the entire world in a year or two, what camera would it be? You can also bring three lenses. In this scenario, money is no object.

State your reasons why too.


Me? At this point in time (if I could afford it) I'd bring:

-Leica M3
--Leica 35mm summilux-M f/1.4 ASPH Floating Element
--Leica 50mm summicron-M
--Leica 90mm f/2.8 Tele-elmarit-M


My reason is simply because I've heard it's the best. If I was realistically doing this I'd bring a canon ae1 program and some top canon FD L lenses as it'd be more affordable and I'm more familiar with the camera itself, but what the hell.

Haven't tried lots of systems but my main system right now is

Canon a-1
Canon fd 20 mm 2.8
Canon fd 50 mm 1.8
Canon fd 100 mm 3.5

Really like the look of these lenses as we'll. I might want to change the 20 mm to a 35 mm 2.0 since I don't really know if I like wide angle enough to have to choose between a wide angle and 50 mm.

But if I could choose I think I would like a hasselblad 500 system with some awesome lenses.

6x6 format -- if money is no object I guess it'd be a Mamiya 6, with 60, 80 and maybe 150 lenses. And a long steady supply of Tri-X.

If you're looking at just 35mm format, I guess a Leica MP with ASPH 35 Cron and a 21. Ditto for the endless supply of TX.

There is no best. A Hassey outfit would provide higher quality negatives. Any Nikon would re-load faster. Most Olympus lenses will knock your socks off. The right Canon or Minolta outfit would be real swell. An Exacta outfit with three Zeiss lenses would not only amuse the natives, but get you great images. Don't trade your spouse for a vapid, self-centered movie star. Every "star" actor or camera brand has its downsides. Utilize what you know works for you.

Very true! But that wasn't my point, and is why I said I'd actually probably bring a canon AE1p if it was ever to come down to it. But I was just curious to see what others would bring.

yesssssssshhh... but only one will still be standing on its feet at the end of the trip! (granted, a long enough trip)

In your situation, I would choose the most reliable equipment, in a format that is commonly available everywhere, like 35mm. I think your choice of mechanical Leica equipment is excellent.

My only comment would be to either have the M3 thoroughly examined and adjusted prior to the trip, or to purchase a newer model, like the M6. Or maybe take both the M3 and an M6 as a backup.

Mamiya 6, 50, 75 & 150

M3 w/ 50 1.4 aspheric, CV 35mm 1.4 MC & XPan w/ 45 & 90mm lenses.

Nikon FM3A, 28mm F2 AIS, 50mm 1.8 AIS, 105mm 2.5 AIS.

F100, 35mm 1.4G, 85mm 1.8G

Hasselblad 501CM, 60mm CF, 100mm CF

With 12 cameras bodies and 35 lens, the choices are endless and the list goes on and on....

i'd bring a graflex series d slr ( 4x5 )
with a 21cm f3.8 tessar
and as many film holders bag mags and film as i needed ( and boxes to offload into )
or maybe just a delmar 4x5 box camera and film / holders
and a few jars of cheap instant coffee, a few 1lb jars of hypo and a few small 5x7 tupperware containers
and process everything on the road as i took it ...

If I were required to bring 35mm, it would be a Contax G2 setup with 21, 28, 35, 45 and 90mm lenses. I already have this rig and have traveled with it and shot with it in places as diverse as Buenos Aires to Barcelona to New York City. If I could choose between 35mm and 120, I'd bring my Rolleiflex and simplify matters even further down to just one lens, or if I won the lottery between now and then, I'd pick up a Rolleiwide to add to the package.

Film-wise, for either setup, a whole lot of Ektar 100 for my general purpose color film. Some Portra 160 for night photos on a tripod, and some Portra 800 for hand-held low-light shooting. For B/W, probably just Tri-X.

Well, I did go on such a trip. I'm not lacking for equipment, but I like to travel light - very light. What did I take? My Pentax SP500 with 50/2 lens. That's it.

This one. I used to have one just like it, and it took great photos. No one will want to steal it either. You can buy B&W film for it, which is all I used to shoot in mine. I wish I still had those photos because no one believes me, but it had a really good (plastic) lens on it.

One, two years with one film camera?
Most of them are old now. So, I have to choose something simple, reliable and serviceable, if I need to CLA it by myself.

This would be Rollei 35. I wouldn't mind to have it with me for two years of travel, because it is small and nice. It is also solidly build, and lens is good as well.
It doesn't have flopping mirrors and curtains, it is much less likely to be damaged and worn out because of it.

As much as I like my M4-2, I'm not considering it as travel camera, but the trip camera. And dinking with bunch of lenses for single camera is kind of annoying and time wasting on travel, IMO.

It sure sounded like you were looking for the "best" set of gear. Personally, I'd grab one of my Nikons (probably not my motor-driven original F, it weighs a ton) so maybe a Nikkormat. I would agonize over which lenses. My 70-200 f2.8 Nikkor is a gem, but weighs a half a ton. My 50mm f1.4 Nikkor is great but not as featherweight as my Nikkor 50m f2 lens. My 20mm f2.8 Nikkor is a gem, but awful wide. I have zooms and I'd think about them. Wish I still had my 180mm f2.8 Olympic Sonnar but it is a brick and a half to carry around. I'd probably decide which lenses at the last possible moment. And probably wish I had picked at least one of the others.

My travel setup of late is a Linhof 2x3" Technika with 55mm/105mm/180mm lenses, if I'm going to have time to make photographs.

If I'm only bringing a camera to have with me without much planned photography time, I take the Voigtlander Perkeo II, and maybe the Noblex 150, if I think there will be opportunities to use it.

Ideally a Pentax 6x7 with 45mm, 105mm & 165mm lenses. As this is in the '35mm' section, a Pentax LX with FA20-35mm/4, FA43mm/1.9 & M135/3.5 lenses.

Film wise, FP4+, HP5+, the odd roll of Delta 3200 & Kodachrome 64 (complete with a TARDIS).

Around the world for a year or two? Money no object? I take my 8x10 field camera and my 150mm, 300mm, and 610mm lenses. To travel so far, to spend so much, and to come back with lesser photographs would be a wasted opportunity.
