News release,

I will have my personal "Blaze On" camera bags on display at the Zion workshop....
they have survived the Side Walks on New York, heavy blinding rain and wind, the heat and dust of the Mojave desert, the Colorado river and Black Canyon, and several other unmentionable historic episodes of international insignificance......

no they are not for sale....get your own....

Hey Wilbur!!!

Since we are making lists how about Molokai. I'll be more than happy to do the ground work; I may go over there next month for a weekend.

ZION is just around the corner...

JANUARY 2 to 6

If you have not signed up PLEASE do so ASAP...

We have great group rates at a great motel at the gate of Zion..

Email me for more info:
volquartz@volquartz.com

------------------------------------------

Schedule:

Monday Jan. 2:
Getting to know one another, talking about logistics. Exploring the canyon in the PM.
Dinner.
7M "Perception and Visual Content, what makes a great image? - and why?"

Tusday January 3:
Zion Canyon end of road. parking area. Pre-exposure to control contrast for BW and color. - and for controlling shadow color when shooting color transparency material.
Basic tripod usage. Basic view camera technique. How to analyze the scene and set up your camera quickly. Reciprocity...

Exploring Zion Canyon.

Dinner.
7PM. Claire Curran - one of the finest nature color photographers around will show off some of her 4X5 transparencies and talk about how to get the most out of your color emulsions. Claire also knows the area extremely well and has photographed all over the Southwest for many years. In addition to visiting the Wave she has other recommendations that she believes are equally interesting - or perhaps better.

Wednesday January 4:
We divide into small groups and photograph either in the Canyon or around Grafton Ghost town, Southwest of Springdale.
Dinner.
7PM: Shawn Kielty will talk about composition, how to understand the basics, but perhaps more about how to break these basic rules.

Thursday:
The Wave or White Pocket - or any other destination away from Springdale. We need to talk about logistics Tuesday night and Wednesday AM, in order for everyone to make a decision on where to go...

Late Dinner.

Friday AM:
Looking at prints, transparencies. The future of photographic paper now that Kodak and Agfa have pulled out of the paper market. No more AZO, no more Polymax Fine Art, no more Agfa Brovira...

Lunch

At this point in time several people plan to drive home. Others may stay and photograph around Zion or the plateau?

Local forcast for the next 10 days has a warming trend. Daytime temps up to 50 to 60's. Overnight down to low 40's. We had a great freak storm yesterday. Lasted for nearly 5 hours. Upper elevations near Cedar City and above the Black Ridge all got blanketed with Snow. Cedar mountain was dumped on. Hurricane/Zion Area had hurricane force winds, and a down pour of several inches of rain. But what do I know about the local weather? I only live here.

see you there Ryan,

The best thing for those winds for a lf photog in to get one of those portable duck blinds from Bass Pro and just stake them down....they will withstand and you have room to sit and have your camera on tripod away from the wind...and rain....also very effective for bagging green and blue wings, mallards, and Canada Geese....

The official report on the winds, they clocked them at 96 MPH. Tim was home alone and thought the windows were going to implode.

To the rest of you, I will be home, but not attending. I was told that I know nothing of Zion National Park (worked there for 2 years, took tours through for a tour company for another 3 years, and hiked every last trail and non trail in the park during the 10 years before I got married that I lived here). I was told that for my help with the workshop last year, that (direct quote) "It was the worst workshop that (per) I had ever had. So everyone enjoy, and have fun. I refuse to be party to something I just get emailed a slap in the face about.

Back from a nice week, good weather and of course spectacular scenery.
Met some new people and enjoyed the comaraderie of fellow photogs.

The transparency presentation by Claire Curran was inspiring as well as her dedication to her craft and chosen profession. I feel her work, mainly color, is on par with or even exceeds that of Muench and Dykinga. I believe you will all know her name soon enough.

Per's insight and generosity was ever present, and I look forward to more gatherings.

Thanks to Per for organizing this and to the others who attended.
