I look on such incidents as opportunities to promote film. A polite answer helps us all much more that a rebuff.

I'm sure that was her point. But who dies that?? It's just a shame that people don't get the full facts before they open their pie-holes. Of course, a pompous ass like that would never be prone to let facts influence her sense of superiority.

A quick belt 'round the back of the head with a Rollei would also be sooo much more satisfying than one with a digital elph. :D Maybe there are cases where violence solves everything.:D:D

Bob H

Yup Bob, violence has now replaced esperanto as the international language, and quick swipe on the back of the head with a Rollei can be universaly understood.

You might have asked if he'd still want Babe Ruth on his team.

Ruth wouldn't be much help; he being dead.

Carry an Argus C-3 for just these occasions. Makes a fearsome wound, what with all those sharp edges.

... and, who knows, with a flash attached it might act like a boomarang - knock the victim unconcious then return to your camera bag on its own.

I like the way this Brian Shaw thinks.....:D

Never had any derogatory remarks mostly just curious looks (I think they thought I was some kind of professional ) expect one guy ask me if it was a movie camera. I told him it was a still camera, still mine.

I agree, and that's what I did, despite the provocation to answer sharply.

Most people know zip about photography in general, especially conventional photography. Their "knowledge" about conventional photography seems to boil down to it's old, and uses all those CHEMICALS, which to the uninformed means pollution.

Do what I do when confronted with one of these people: try asking them what they actually know about how photographs are made (conventional photographs, that is, not fauxtographs, made with digital resources), and then educate them. Be positive, and proactive. You may make a friend, and a devotee to the cause of Real Photography.

I was crouched over my camera once by a river early on a Sunday morning and this guy walks past with his dog and asks me if I have 'caught' anything. He seemed to think I was fishing (!).

One night I was in Savannah with my first 4x5 (Omega), taking a night shot of a River Street open-air restaurant. Don't remember the exposure time, but it was several minutes. In the middle of the exposure a guy with a beer (obviously not his first) walked right up to me, stood in front of the lens, and asked me if I was "taking a picture with that thing." Yup, sure was, I replied, and he sauntered away, satisfied with his interrogation. When I made the print I was pleased to see that there was no evidence of him whatsoever. In fact, it was a very nice shot, which I enlarged to 20x24, framed, and exhibited.

You could always say "Do you realize how much energy it takes to produce all those electrons contained in digital photographs????!"

my vote would be for a Nikon F Photomic.

I would have pointed at his shoes or bat and said: "Do these win lots of games?"

....hate, the way to the Dark Side is.....

Perhaps just a gentle tap from an RB with meter prism ...

Reminds me of Newtonian Physics. A Mass in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.

I've enjoyed reading the comments in this thread. I needed a good laugh. I especially liked the notion of an Argus C-3 w/flash boomeranging back into the camera bag. I have one of these w/the flash and can just envision it.

I do take the time to talk to people about photography. I draw the line when they ask how much the camera costs. I have tried to have anyone who photographs with me not mention money when it comes to camera gear also. Particularly when it is my gear which is being described.

So what color was this young uninformed hair dyed? Was it chemically enhanced bright yuppie red?

Is this really such a Big Issue that we even need to fabricate an ideal opponent and ritually castigate him/her in a take-your-turn community effort?

What's the Big Hang Up here?

Well - that's the end of that then. Fun while it lasted.

Cheers All

And your point is?

If you don't want to play, go away. Nobody put a gun to your head and made you read this thread. Nobody even put an Argus C-3 to your head, although that's an idea.

And why don't you become a subscriber is you want a say in how things are done here?

Dear Moderators,

Feel free to move this to "The Lounge" if you feel it is extraneous and undesireable in the "Medium Format Cameras and Accessories" forum. You have my permission.

QG, you don't have to participate if you don't want to. But to answer your question... no, it really isn't that much of a Big Issue or Big Hang Up. It was more of a curious observation that was offered, and responded to, in a light-hearted way.

Tim, please be nice to QG. He's a valued contributor, especially on Hassy issues.

Respectfully,
OP (not from Mayberry)

People that bug me when I am fotoing should all be locked up for a very long time.
See? it is fun to be silly.
or as my daughter says, chillax.....................
