NOT "Is that a Hasselblad"

This is the first time I heard this one.

Hasselblad was set up on a tripod to photograph kiddie baseball when one of the coaches comments, "I haven't seen a camera like that in many years; do they still take good pictures?"

I was speechless and at a loss for words.

That is the trouble these day's: digi rules and most people think it is a lot better than before.....
At times I feel sorry for them, but at least we know better.

I actually read it as "I haven't seen a camera like that in many years; I remember that they took good pictures, am I wrong?". It didn't seem to me as a derogatory remark about an "old camera still being able to take good pictures" but the knowledge of a good camera that one hasn't seen in a while and a needed reaffirmation of that memory. So, in that sense, he wasn't being insulting to the good name of Hasselblad, he was actually praising it (and showing off his knowledge of cameras), just did it a bit awkwardly.

I didn't take it as derogatory or insulting, Ari. The coach who said that is a really nice guy. It did amuse me, though, because the words seem a bit awkward.

I also understood it as a kind of compliment when I read it. Really nice indeed. Somehow strange how different people can conceive the same situation in such different manner...

My take was that he assumed camera performance deteriorated with age - like a refrigerator or something. If he'd been talking about the roll of HP-3 that came with the 'blad, he'd have a point

The first time I used my brand new Tachihara, I was asked whether my antique camera could take good pictures. I replied better than any digital and proceded to show him how it worked, the image on the ground glass, etc. He thought it was pretty cool......and it is!

I've never had that question, but I did get a comment recently from a busybody who wanted to know, "...why are you using a camera that causes pollution?", with the camera in question being my trusty 1952 Rolleicord.

I took ten minutes and educated this young person in the truth about photo pollution (90% from the printed circuit-board industry), and about how the average life of an electronic device these days is three years, and do you know where an expired computer ends up?, with a hearty recommendation to see the film about Ed Burtynsky's photography, "Manufactured Landscapes."

I closed by telling the bb that my camera would NEVER end up in a landfill, and that the puny digital job she had in her hand, like all current electronic devices, causes an average of 24 tonnes of greenhouse gas, each.

(BTW, if that figure is inaccurate, would a kindly APUGer please correct me? That's what I recall having read about a year ago...)

I'm sure that was her point. But who dies that??:confused: It's just a shame that people don't get the full facts before they open their pie-holes. Of course, a pompous ass like that would never be prone to let facts influence her sense of superiority.

A quick belt 'round the back of the head with a Rollei would also be sooo much more satisfying than one with a digital elph. Maybe there are cases where violence solves everything.

My apologies - you're absolutely right !! It's just that I'd originally thought to discuss exactly what this pompous lady was talking through........and "pie-hole" seemed a little more appropriate for the sensibilities of APUG members.
