It looks like we should make some attempt to get this event organized. Lets try and firm up a date. As some may remember from the Michigan event, good food and good conversation is a significant factor in this kind of gathering. A good 356 Porsche friend, who manages a local country club, also runs the four day Greek Festival at his church in Akron, September 18-21. I have never had food in a US Greek restaurant that compared to the food prepared for this event. Besides that it is much cheaper than a restaurant. I would suggest some of us spend one day of our event in Akron including the festival and:

Architecturally the new Akron Art museum

Photographic collections the new photography wing at the Akron Art Museum

Entropy1 the 200 year old locks of the OH Erie canal,
four in one mile, oddly in Summit county http://www.cascadelocks.org/

Entropy2 the waste of industry moved away with crumbling buildings and nasty neighborhoods, architecture and street photography. I'll rent out our dogs as body guards.

So how do you feel about the week leading up to the weekend of September 18-21?

Bob,

Wonderful and welcome to APUG. I see in your profile that you shoot medium format. What subject matter can we help you find on your visit?

I just found this thread; didn't realize there was a 'regional section'. Sounds like this would be just down the road from me, I can't miss it.

BTW, I finally did get an 8x10 enlarger, so I need to shoot some more 8x10 negs. I keep enlarging the same ones from my first box of 20, over and over...

Ic-racer,

Welcome.

I have been reading about your new Durst 1184 and was about to mention that I also use 6” multigrade Ilford filters under the lens of my 8x10 Durst 138S conversion. By the time I got to it you had already thanked everyone for their information.

Come on down. There may be several of us shooting 8x10 or the 4x10 variation by then. For that matter since you are local, why wait? Peter, Shawn and I are shooting the cliffs at Kendall Ledges and Nelson Ledges. I am continuing my 7x17 Ohio-Erie canal series. Help us find some new spots for the out of town visitors and make some new negatives to print.

The recently finished renovation of the Akron Art Museum and its new Photographic wing were mentioned here earlier as things to photograph and see in our area. Read an interview in B&W (US) issue 58, April 2008, page 52, of collectors Fred & Laura Bidwell. They are photographers. He was president of the Museum for eight years, ran the building fund raising & design committee. She chairs the accessions committee and has run a gallery. They donated the photography wing, have half their collection on display now, bring major photographers to lecture and do workshops at the University. Their bringing Lois Conner to University of Akron is the reason I got into LF and specifically 7x17. This may give you an idea of the photographic spirit of the neighborhood you will be visiting.

I don't know how much you travels take you North on River Road, or if you have been to these two places; I keep visiting these spots over-and-over. I think others would enjoy visiting these places with a view camera. These two locations are in the Brecksville reservation just off River Road.

It sound great but the date is the important thing for me. It is a 5-6 hour drive and most of my weekends (sat,) are taken up coaching tennis. I will see after you set the date.

Charlie,

Welcome to APUG. Happy to have you interested in this event with your first post. A little bit back in this thread I suggested a date and reasons why that might be a good time. "So how do you feel about the week leading up to the weekend of September 18-21?" I was surprised that there was no discussion.

Lets try again. Are those of you interested in coming to this event happy with the week leading up to the weekend of September 18-21? Several have said to me off line that they are coming when ever it is, but I realize that the dates can be critical for others. What do you all think?

That sounds like a fine time of year for me. I'll be coming from Toledo. I'm just a 35mm shooter, with way too much gear, but I'm still using film. I'm not a hiker or camper, but burn lots of film.

Ic Racer,

Those look to be a great addition and quite different from what I have been shooting. I may have seen the rocks in the river that goes under Rt. 82 near the Brecksville entrance to the park, but it could easily be from another area.

Thank you and the others who have added ideas to this plan. The event is ours to make interesting and enjoyable for the group. As I am typing this I got a call from Peter Spangenberg who chimed in earlier. We are setting up a date to photograph at Blue Hen Falls. http://www.gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls/bluehen.shtml. It is two miles from the house and should have a bit more snow and ice this week than in the linked picture. This park is a wonderful place, constantly changing.

Wow, my 1000th post. I am glad it is setting up something for many of us in APUG to enjoy.

Ken,

No need to camp. Once I have a count I plan to talk to the local motels to see if we can get a group rate. There is one motel at the Turnpike and Rt. 77 that is about five miles from our house. The others probably aren't ten miles away.

Film burners are welcome. At the beginning of the event i hope to take people around to some of the spots I like. Other locals may do the same. Some of the places we are talking about are a few feet from the car, some are a hike, hopefully something for everyone. We can all meet for dinner and tell lies about our day.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but isn't the Metro Park off River Road the South Chagrin Reservation?

Bob,

It wouldn't surprise me if there is more than one River Road around here. What I understood, and I may be wrong, is the road that runs along the west side of the Cuyahoga River. The south end would be on the north side of Akron going to Peninsula at Rt. 303. The area I believe Ic-Racer mentions is the continuation north of that road to where it crosses Rt. 82 east of Brecksville. That road continues north to I believe Rockside.

Possibly another way of looking at it is, we have so many beautiful parks around here, national and local. Add that to the Buckeye trails traveling over several park systems and our own family's back yard of nearly a hundred acres. Maybe we should just call it Northern Ohio Gathering, Fall of 2008, in the park.

My two Labradors and I have hiked the South Chagrin Reservation with a group called Hiking Hounds and it is beautiful. I believe there is a River Rd. that hits Miles Rd. near one of the park entrances.

APUG, you all come to the NE OH parks and shoot film.

You're right John, there is a lot to see here. Another possibility is the geodesic dome at the American Society for Metals headquarters.

You may be correct, but just like 'Main Street' that is probably a different 'River Road.' And they are probably all called 'Metropark.'

The place I like is technically called Brecksville Reservation, part of Cuyahoga County National Park. One of the nice, deserted, shooting spots is just at the junction of Chippewa creek and the Cuyahoga river.

This mapquest is awesome. In fact, I don't even have to go there to take pictures any more, I can just get them from the aerial image... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v670/ic-racer/mapimage.jpg

Here are the boulders in the river http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v670/ic-racer/map2.jpg

John,

Have you made a decision regarding the date? Is it September 18-21? I hope to attend.

Joe

Joe,

That is great news. I had hoped for more feed back on the date, but it seems positive so far. No objections as of today. I am really testing the water.

Speaking of testing the water, do you have any interest in bringing your wet plate workshop here earlier in the week as you are doing at Bill Schwab's in June? I believe Robert Puckett from near here has signed on for the June event. There seems to be a growing interest in wet plate here. Please feel free to sample interest in this thread if you are interested.

One of my silver 7x17 contact prints was juried in to the six state FAVA show going on right now in Oberlin, OH. There are several wet plate images there as well as Cyanotype, Ambrotype and some other alt processes. I am going for a second look Monday March 3rd and will try to remember to get a count. http://www.favagallery.org/Fava gallery.html

Dolly and I would love to have the party, but we don't know if there is an interest. On February 25th we sent the following questionnaire to the twenty APUGers who had expressed interest in previous posts. Of twenty sent we received four back. If there is an interest please respond by PM.

Questionnaire:
Northern Ohio Gathering, Fall of 2008, Cuyahoga Valley National Park

The week leading up to the weekend of
September 18-21, 2008

Thank you for your interest in our APUG Ohio Fall 2008 Gathering. Please take a moment to give some information about yourself so Dolly and I have a better understanding of who will be our guests and how we can make it a great time. We promise not to use this information for any other purpose.

Name (s) coming

Home address

Telephone number

Email where we can send updates

Cell phone if you will have it with you so we can contact each other during the event.

Will you be camping on our property? We will have to rent a porta potty and split the costs or there is the woods.

Would you like us to explore near by hotels that might give a group discount?

Which nights do you think you will be here?

Of the photographic interests described what are your priorities so we can plan outings?

We will have a show and tell of any work you wish to bring

Is there a workshop or presentation you would like to offer?

Emergency contact we hope not to need?

Your Questions?

Thanks for giving us your thoughts. We are looking forward to your visit.

Cody Gross, who was at Bill Schwab's 2007 gathering, brings us up to seven. He said that he would like to see Cuyahoga Falls. That gave me the idea to list nearby water falls with links to pictures and details so others can decide if that is something they want to see. Obviously how much summer rain we have will alter the view.

How long an event will this be? Basically you are welcome for what time you can spend. Tentatively we plan to welcome people at our house every morning around 9 AM . Some may want to join others, or go off in their own direction. We can meet again around 5 PM to look at prints, go to dinner and tell stories about our adventures.

We can start that process Wednesday morning and go through Sunday. September 17-21, 2008 I can show those that want some off the sights mentioned earlier or just give directions if you want to go off on your own. Thursday I am suggesting we shoot in the Akron area (Cascade Locks, Akron Art Museum, etc) and end up at the Greek Festival for dinner. From there on we can make it up based on what of the long list of things mentioned you want to do. If anyone was thinking of starting earlier than Wednesday, let me know your thoughts. I am sure we can work something out.

You all come.

John
