Happy to have you if you can come. I used to live and work in Westmoreland County. Great place and also photogenic.

Hello, I am a student in Akron, and I just stumbled upon this. It sounds interesting, and I was wondering what happens at events like this and who is welcome.

Hello, I am a student in Akron, and I just stumbled upon this. It sounds interesting, and I was wondering what happens at events like this and who is welcome.

Welcome to APUG and welcome to our gathering. What happens is that a group of like minded people of all ages gather to enjoy photography, see the work other people have been doing and make new images of local attractions. We think, talk and do photography for as many hours as we can stay awake. The idea is based on Bill Schwab’s Photostock 2008, a northern Michigan gathering that started three years ago and will draw some 60 photographers in next week. It is fun, informative and a good experience. Bring your work to show. Enjoy what other people have been doing. If you are interested in APUG you are certainly welcome.

I just caught this thread a little late. I would be so thrilled to come to this! I'm also in Erie Pa. Is this a multi-format event or large format? I'm open to either but prefer LF. This would be so kool! Can you see the stars on your property if you stay in a tent? Wow! I'm unemployed right now so I can make plans for anything and then wait and see.

Dorothy

p.s., I suspect you need to be an Apug member?

Dorothy,

Welcome. I am sorry to read of your unemployment. I have painfully been there. As a former software salesman, every time someone sneezed in the Silicon Valley a bunch of us all over the country were looking for another employer.

This is definitely a multi-format event. People have said they are coming who carry 35mm up through ULF. My current work is 7x17 inch contact prints. I hope you and all others will bring their best work to show and tell. Seeing all that great work is always inspiration for me to go out and do my own work a little harder. Though it is an APUG event one member is bringing a friend who isn’t a member. Again for me it is all about an interest in photography.

This is the enthusiasm that carries the day. “I would be so thrilled to come to this! “

You can see the stars on our property. There is a glow to the south that is Akron and a glow to the north that is Cleveland, but over head there are stars on a clear night. The days are what amaze me. I just finished breakfast with my wife as she prepared to go to a watercolor workshop. We overlook about a half acre pond. On the far side a Great Blue Heron had landed and was stalking his breakfast. All of a sudden the Heron started running. Behind it was walking a large Doe having a breakfast of leaves from the trees. We have already seen spotted fawns this year running around the edge of the pond. Where you will be camping we have seen as many as twenty deer at a time. We have also seen raccoon, fox and coyote, so don’t leave any food out. My guess is that the noise of people will keep most of the regulars at a distance.

You all come.

So John... Are you set on that Sept 19th - 21st weekend now?

Bill,
I am wondering if there is more to the question than you wrote because I thought that had been answered?

On 4/28/08 I put in the questionnaire,
The week leading up to the weekend of
September 18-21, 2008

On May 5, 08 I wrote,
We can start that process Wednesday morning and go through Sunday. September 17-21, 2008 I can show those that want some off the sights mentioned earlier or just give directions if you want to go off on your own. Thursday I am suggesting we shoot in the Akron area (Cascade Locks, Akron Art Museum, etc) and end up at the Greek Festival for dinner. From there on we can make it up based on what of the long list of things mentioned you want to do. If anyone was thinking of starting earlier than Wednesday, let me know your thoughts. I am sure we can work something out.

You of all people are welcome as the inspiration for this event. You are welcome to come for the whole event or any part of it. It would help with our planning if people who are coming would fill out the questionnaire posted 4/28/08 so we can prepare for their arrival. Please PM the questionnaire.

Sorry John. I think I missed the questionnaire on 4-28 and haven't been following the thread that closely. I read through 5 pages of it until I came to Joe's question on the dates and your answer to his post still did not confirm them. Later in the same page you write...
The week leading up to the weekend of
September 18-21, 2008
That was still a little vague to a simple mind like mine. Wasn't sure where that "week" started. The weekend is the 19th - 21st. The week is the 15th to the 21st (if you start your weeks with Monday). I can now see from your quotation of the questionnaire that the start date is the 17th. My bad.

In the future, you might want to simply pick the dates and then post them at the beginning of the thread. I've found that trying to work around people's schedules is difficult at best. Set your date and then work up to it. Better than having people try to plan for some vague time frame. Once they have something firm to plan for, there is a better chance they will come.

Thanks Bill.

Both you and Joe Smigiel asked this and I hadn't understood the question. I am glad I asked and you responded. I hope it is clear to all now. I look forward to your event next week and hope to see many of the same people here in the fall,

Wednesday morning through Sunday, September 17-21, 2008

Please, those who can come PM the questionnaire posted 4/28/08 so we can prepare for your arrival.

Northern Ohio Gathering, Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Anyone wondering why have a second or third gathering in the Midwest in one summer need only look at these pictures of Photostock 2008 from Mark an Marc. Look at the faces. These people are having fun and/or are considering really interesting photographic ideas. For me that is what it is all about. Come to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in September for more of the same.

I'm planning on making it to the gathering, John. I'll be home from the Minnesota gathering late Monday night/early Tuesday morning (9-15/16), catch up with things at home & work for a couple days and hit the road again probably on Thursday morning (9/18) to head out to Cuyahoga Valley NP.

Thanks for putting this together, John!

So is there going to be any processing and enlarging happening?

My darkroom is only 10'x13'. Processing and enlarging could be a little crowded. I can show you what I have (Jobo flm developer, 4x5 and 8x10 enlargers) and how I use it, but my expectation is that this event will be more about shooting, looking at current work, talking about how we do the current work and picking up ideas from people who are doing other things.

Do you have access to darkrooms in Athens? Are you taking any film-wet darkroom courses there? University of Akron has two B&W darkrooms, a color darkroom, thirty five enlargers and a color processor. The wet courses are overbooked so they have had to hire additional part time MFAs to handle the additional students. Oh, they also teach that other process as well.

Shawn,

Great to hear that. Thanks. Did you get over to Nelson's Ledges? Kendall Ledges in the Cuyahoga Valley Natonal Park, about three miles from here, is a tamer version of Nelson's Ledges. Either place offer great photo opps for the rocks, roots and "trees just hanging on" enthusiasts. LeeL, Peter Spangenberg and I are fans of that. Lee and Peter plan to be here also.

Looking forward to meeting you. Thanks for the survey when you have a chance.

I am no longer in Athens anymore. I have my own darkroom, and hopefully I will have access to Akron's darkrooms this fall. I have taken one intro course there, but after 4 classes in high school, I can't say I learned anything new.

I retired in 2003 and have taken fourteen photo related courses at U Akron since then. I am probably as old as your grand parents, but hopefully we can talk by that gap. I will PM you and we can talk about course possibilities off line. As you get into the advanced classes and move to larger formats there is potential for a lot of excitement. The school has 6x7 cm and 6x9 cm Fuji range finder cameras and 4x5 inch view cameras to loan to students. If you are in the Akron area this summer I would be happy to have you visit my darkroom before the Sept. gathering and talk about where you want to go with your photography.

Jeff,

You are most welcome. There is plenty of room for campers. I have not found anything local to equal the Big Chicken though.

How ever, please tell Eva that she made the party at Photostock 2008 and that you are not allowed to come unless she joins us as well.

It looks like we may have several campers. You are more than welcome to do so. At Photostock 2008 I noticed a few campers shivering through bucket showers. We have a pond about 1/3 to 1/2 acre in size located between the house and where people will be camping. The bottom is pretty muddy, but it drops off fast. If people would like we can anchor the 9 foot inflatable dingy I brought to Photostock 2008 and use it as a swimming raft. You can dive in to avoid the mud. When you get out you could wash the mud off your feet with a hose.

Hazards in the pond:
There is a snapping turtle whose shell is about a foot across. He may have been relocated by September.
There are often two flying yellow Labrador Retrievers just behind the tennis ball that landed beside you.

Additional perks: The pond has Bass, Blue Gill and three foot Grass Carp. The pond has not been fished in at least twenty years. If you will catch and release, anyone attending is welcome to bring a rod and reel. The last person that fished here twenty years ago caught four fish in four casts.

My guess is that the street photographers amongst us could have a lot of fun with any of the above.

Joe Smigiel, if you come and hire a model, she won’t get poison ivy in the dingy.
