Last June, twenty four enthusiastic, Midwestern, photographers, met at Bill Schwab’s Northern Michigan event. It was a wonderful meeting of like minds, camaraderie, visiting Bill’s favorite places to shoot, learning from and helping happy film nuts. It was a joy to see such excellent work and hear people talk about processes they were trying. The only thing I didn’t like was that when it was over there wasn’t going to be another one for a year.

In an effort to change that we would like to stage an additional Midwestern gathering in the Fall of 2008, not in competition with Bill, but an addition. This is the planning stage. We need feedback and interest in having a second gathering, possibly late September – early October of 2008. If there is enough interest we will put it on.

Dolly and I live about a mile from the western edge of the park, roughly five miles from the OH turnpike and RT 77, between Akron and Cleveland. We have three acres attached to her family’s 87 acres. There is room for 10-12 tents if people want to camp. We would need to rent a porta potty for the campers. Cold drinkable water is available. Within five miles there is every chain hotel and restaurant. We can plan cook outs or have meals out as we did in Michigan. My darkroom is available for loading film holders and camera emergencies. Visiting workshops, presentations and individual show and tell are encouraged.

Possible photo subjects arranged by distance:

At home - pond, barn, woods, fields, streams, horses, dogs, deer by night, heron, geese, ducks by day, 1955 356 Porsche speedster

2-5 miles – three water falls, fifteen OH-Erie canal locks in various states of disrepair, heron rookery with 150+ nests, covered wooden bridge, goat farm, scenic railroad, ponds, 1830s restoration village (no tripods), lakes, marsh, beaver dams, grass land, forests, 50 foot cliffs, caves, streams feeding the Cuyahoga River, farm orchard producing home made ice cream and pies (purely of photographic interest), OH Turnpike bridges crossing the Cuyahoga River gorge.

20 miles- Cleveland flats were it is said that you can not take a picture without including three bridges, five is common, lake freighters 700-1,000 feet long, Lake Erie Industrial shore to scenic beaches. Thriving and failed industry. Frank Gehry designed -. Weatherhead School of Management. I. M. Pei designed - Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. New Photography wing at the Akron Art Museum. New Photography wing at the Cleveland Art Museum may be finished, not sure.

What do you think of the idea?
Would you attend such a gathering?
What questions do you have?
How many days should it be?
What would you add or subtract?

COME ON OVER !!!

This is driving distance for me so I'd be very interested in attending. The only holdup for me is my girlfriend and I are going on vacation next October. I don't know the dates exactly, but if I can swing it, I'm there.

Sounds like a great idea. It's about a 45 minute drive for me so assuming the dates work I'd love to attend.

If I'm not out west next fall I would love to be at your gathering. Good idea.

Hi John, as we discussed at bill's.....I am in for sure. I can't wait. Looking at the subjects to photograph on your list I suppose one could spend a weeks there. I would be happy with an extended weekend (i.e. Thurs-Sun) but would stay longer.

See you next fall.

I hope we can make this work with the gathering we're planning annually for Minnesota too. Unfortunately it's right around the same time we're planning it, so I hope that doesn't throw any 'sticks in the wheels' for either of our groups, in that fewer people will attend both conferences.
If I can find the time, money, and still be at peace with the war department I will try to make it to Michigan in the spring, as well as Lake Superior and Ohio in the fall. Sounds like there is great interest from lots of interesting people!

John,
Sounds like another wonderful opportunity to hang out, share ideas/work, and maybe even make some photographs. I would love to join in the fun.

All the best,

I'd like to attend: its a long drive for me but then so is Bill's and it's worth it. This sounds interesting. 2-3 days is probably a good start and can be adjusted later based on what is learned. September could be a problem for me, though: the third weekend is currently booked for a UP Michigan trip with another group. The next weekend in September or early October works for me.

Thank you all. I couldn’t be happier with the response, twelve months in advance of the event.

Travis, thank you. We are still sorting out dates. There was only one women at Bill’s event. She seemed to be enjoying it. I hope she will join us here. If your girl friend likes photography, she is certainly welcome.

Shawn, Happy to have you. I am hopping this event will help introduce more Midwestern photographers to each other.

Bill, it is your fault. Happy to have our mentor check in. We may have to recruit you to lead the midnight bull sessions. At your event I was exhausted by the end of dinner (10:00 PM) and had to go to bed after loading film holders. I gather I missed a lot, but it was the best I could do. I didn’t realize until the group picture that I was the oldest one there carrying the biggest camera. Something wrong or very right with that.

Jim, it was great meeting you in June. Hope you will come and add your wit and wisdom to the pot.

Cody, Great. I knew we would have some more fun together.

John, if there is interest we can start early for a few and build toward the weekend. Since you have already found a white Speedster we will have to see what other attractions draw your attention.

Thomas, I will PM you to discuss ways we can stagger the times. I am guessing that there are some midway between us that might want to go both directions. Do you think there are many who could afford to go to both events within a month? I mean afford both in the time away sense as well as financially.

Daniel, your work just gets better every time I see it. Glad you are coming. Hope we will have more time to talk.

Mike, I couldn’t agree with you more. Great bunch of people. Well worth the drive to see the work, enjoy the people and look at a new place to shoot.

I thought of another attraction to add to the list. In the Critical gallery look at Peter Spangenberg’s Nelson Ledges 4x10 shot. Peter took me out there (an hour east of here). It is beautiful, photogenic and very strange with Beech tree roots crawling down 50 foot cliffs. Ohio’s version of Angkor Wat without the temples. Not a place to go with vertigo, but beautiful otherwise.

You all come.

John,
I'll be heading out to Nelson's Ledges this weekend(only a half an hour away and I've never been there!? The picture you mentioned is what got me thinking about it). I have a feeling I'll be getting to know it quite well by the time the event rolls around, might even be my next project. If so, and there is interest, I'd be happy to take a group and show them around the area come next fall. Best. Shawn

Hey, all,
I'm not too far away and will be retiring in January. I'll have plenty of time for such diversions. I'd dearly love to attend some or all.
Are 35mm shooters allowed? Or is it all LF and MF? Of course, I could get out my YashicaMat......

Stevebeyer, welcome to APUG and welcome to the Northern Ohio Gathering. We have narrowed the time frame to a choice of the last weekend of September or one of the first two weekends of October 2008. You might read Bill Schwab’s "Annual" Northern Michigan Gathering 2007 to get a better idea of what we will try to model. (there was a url link here which no longer exists) As this thread continues we will determine if the interest allows us to start Friday, Thursday, Wednesday or what.

Peter, you’ve told me you like deadlines as motivators. Your welcome entrance ticket is to bring more Nelson Ledges 4x10 prints for show and tell. Start printing, there are only 11 months before show time.

Rosey, if you shoot film and are part of APUG, you are welcome. This is all about the camaraderie of people who are really crazy about photography. It is another chance to get together, talk, shoot, and see work to a level that would drive all our sane friends nuts. You are welcome to come, show your work, or just see what other people are doing, your choice.

Another Northern Ohio architectural photographic attraction opened this weekend. The Cleveland Institute of Music’s new recital hall, designed by Charles Young of New York, a gifted protege of I.M. Pei. who designed the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. “…a 250-seat recital stage flooded with natural light and views of gardens and trees outside. It’s a magical place that ought to rank as one of the world’s most beautiful new buildings for musical performance. … the recital hall looks from the outside like a rectangular glass jewelry case set within a curving framework of baby-smooth, sculpted concrete. At night, it glows like a lantern, lighting up a corner of University Circle, the city’s cultural and educational hub.
Dead Link Removed Plain Dealer review.

The recital hall is across the street from the Cleveland Botanical garden..” The centerpiece of the $50 million 2003 expansion is The Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse, an 18,000 square foot (1,700 m²) conservatory home to plant and animal life from two separate biomes, the spiny desert of Madagascar and the cloud forest of Costa Rica. They feature over 350 species of plants and 50 species of animals.” Wikopedia The recital hall is also.about two blocks from the Frank Gehry designed Weatherhead School of Management.

Art, thank you. I think the Michigan gathering lost you to an Origami affair. Unfortunately we can’t plan these events on one week’s notice. This one has already discovered and adjusted to an overlap with the Minnesota gathering, twelve months in advance. If you are available you certainly are welcome.

Bob, welcome to APUG. I am honored that your first post is for this event. Introduce yourself and let us know where your film interests lie. Novelty is not far away. Peter Spangenberg and I find some of our most interesting equipment near there at a printers' salvage company.

For the last several years I have been using a medium format camera. Recently purchased a 4x5 camera and am busy making mistakes while learning to use it. Shoot black & white and recently built a darkroom at our home.

Bob,

Welcome again. Don’t feel badly. We are all making mistakes with our
Gear. This has been a wonderful place for me to explore those mistakes and learn from others. That is available for anyone on APUG and we hope at all the gatherings.

I'm interested

I live over in Erie PA. About an hour and a half away. I'd love to get together with some other film people. Not much going on here in Erie. All digital. If it works I'll be there.

Leslie,

Great to hear you will be with us. Lots of film being shot over here especially that weekend. I see hiking and camping in your profile. If you want you can camp here or stay in a near by motel. There is lots of hiking thoughout the national park and the local parks. Hope to see you here.
