I have an older Norman 200B flash unit with original charger. B&H has a replacement but warns against using the older charger. The battery is nicad but newer technology. Tech rep at Quantum(they own Norman) said it was ok to use the older charger? The replacement battery is product #811926. I thought about having old battery rebuilt but I think I recycled them.

Some replacement batteries are lead acid, rather than the original NiCad, which might account for stated incompatability of charger. The B&H Nicad replacement mentions not using 'trickle charger', and the fact that the newer chargers have a computerized circuit -- that cuts off continuous charging (trickle). The issue for NiCad charger is not its Voltage (which is why Quantum says it is OK to use (for newer NiCad battery) but the long term 'trickle' overheating the battery shortening battery life...charge only to full, then disconnect the charger.

You'd be better off replacing the Norman with something more modern. If you want a compact barebulb flash then Godox makes a new one or you could pick up a used Quantum Q-Flash. I think those two are around the same power as the Norman but I'm going off memory so...

Thank you, I used to use the Norman when I did weddings years ago. I’m going through a stage now where I’m looking through my equipment cabinet and reevaluating different things. To give you an idea I recently had a Singer Graflex Strobe 250 charger rebuilt and now it works! It’s a good feeling saving some vintage cameras etc.

Norman uses EnerSys lead acid batteries. The company is still in business. You can contact them for prices. And, if you can solder and desolder, then you can remove the connector from your old battery pack and connect the six 2 volt 2.5 Ah batteries in serial, connect the old connector and you are good to go. I haven’t needed to yet, but will when the day comes.

The technician I spoke with at Quantum said they bought Norman. Unfortunately I don’t have the expired cells any longer. The replacement battery being sold is a nikel cadmium . Thank you .
