NIKOR 220 Processing Tank and Reel stainless steel
Reel is straight and true. Loads easily.
This is the big 220-size tank and reel, the good one. There were two types of Nikor 220 reels & tanks made. A 16-oz (same size as 120) and the 28-oz. This is the big one.
I and others have tried to produce uniform film density using the smaller 220 reel. It simply isnt possible. Consider this: during development the need is to remove the spent materials and introduce fresh chemical uniformly over the entire emulsion surface.(width and length). The smaller reels film convolutions are too close together to allow the chemicals to be effectively changed over the entire width of the film.
The small reel has approximately the same number of convolutions and spacing as a 35mm x 36 exposure reel. However, with 35mm the developed film width is only 24 mm since the perf holes let chemical flow through. With 220 the width is 62mm so liquid flow across the film really has to flow a long way as the reel sloshes around. When the development by-products and spent developer arent locally replaced with active developer non-uniformity results. The smaller tank and reel will not yield even moderate quality results. Definitely not high quality.
The top is the Quick-fill type so the film can be loaded into the tank then liquid added and all processing can be done in the light.
The reel and tank are high quality items in excellent condition. The parts are true. The reel flanges are parallel. The cap and the top easily slide snuggly on to their respective receiver and can be easily removed as intended.
This will work well for Processes B&W, C-41 and E-6.
