We gather at my Sister In-Law house for most "occasions".
For the last several years, "everybody" has taken Pictures/Video with some type of Phone/Apple product. Those things are ubiquitous, right.? Then the pics/videos get emailed to family and friends.....everybody loves it.! I like it.!.....but the wife and I do not have that kind of cell phone.
Sunday, I decide to burn up the color film in my Canon Sure Shot that has been in it for 1-2 years.
1. Mother in-law says.....Oh No, don't take MY Picture.!
2. Niece and daughter say.....We feel uncomfortable when you point that at us. We feel like we have to stop and pose for you.
3. Other Gems from the day.
a. What if we don't like the way we look.?
b. The flash is scaring the dog.
c. How is "everybody" going to see the pictures.?
d. Why do you use "that old thing".?
e. But, you can't tell what the pictures are going to look like, what good is that.? (kind of relates to "a")

SEVEN Frames.......Seven F'ing frames is all I took...!!
We were there for 2-3 hours.
For 1-1/2 hours, all those people could talk about was watching some movie called (i think) The Dead Game.....some kind of super hero movie.
So they PAY to watch it on Cable Television. It was on for about 20 minutes before we left.....They all sat down to watch it...the wife and sister go upstairs to "burn one" and I tag along with them...then, when we leave, I notice 5 of the 8 people are Thumbing/Staring at their cell phones, while the movie... that they Had To See... trudges across the screen and into oblivion

What does this have to do with Nikon (assuming you are still reading this short story) you ask.?
I had stuffed some Ilford FP4 into a Nikon FM, but due the comments from the relatives, I decided to just leave that horrible, beast of a device in the bag.

I hope they all got in car wrecks on their way home.
Happy Mothers Day

Next time use tri-x rated at 1600 in the Leica, or something equally inconspicuous. They'll never know ur shooting, or won't care.

Big slrs, whether digital or film, and anything with a flash, always changes the dynamic of the room. Even cell phone cameras are a lot less intrusive.

Mebbe we should send him a "whaaaaambulance"
Ooohhh.....that is a good one. I will have to remember it, for future use, on this forum, when I join in a dog-pile, against one of you insensitive bastards.
BTW, while you guys were picking on me, trying to make me cry, you forget to ask what film I had in the Sure Shot.
It was.......Kodak MAX 400.
Guess I will send it to The Darkroom for developing and prints.

It is somewhat ironic that one of the things many of us cherish about film photography ... its permanence and archival qualities.. is what apparently bothers the crazy relatives.

Cell phone images are somewhat ephemeral to many people. They know that most of those photos will quickly be forgotten. What they fail to realize is that most analog images exist in controlled environments and limited quantities, while digital images on the internet, especially embarrassing ones, seem to propagate endlessly and become immortal.

Maybe so but I'm sure I heard a sniffle and a couple of hiccups as you wrote that.

Next time bring your camera and when they complain point out that they have no problems with cell phones and digi-snappers. Then use the same complaint statements every time they take out a cell phone. If you bitch enough, you can get out of every going to Mother's Day celebrations.

Nah... it's better to grin and bear it than to mess up a celebration. Later, you can skan and email pics to everyone. Most likely the complainers will stop after a couple of parties.

I don't know what this has to do with ethics and philosophy (the forum you chose to post in) but let me try:

The ethical dilemma you successfully addressed. They asked to not be photographed and you complied. Great!

The philosophical: All families are similar to some degree or another. We all go through that. Learn to live with it.

The personal revelation: My kids are quite accommodating of my photographic pursuits. But yesterday the 13 year old asked, why do you keep taking pictures of me. All I could think of in response is that its impolite to stare, so I take pictures instead.

Perfect. My thoughts exactly.

I've been waiting for someone to post that if you had used a Canon camera, no one would have complained.

My relatives hate to have their pictures taken, but disappointed where there's no photographic history of when they were younger.
As far as any negatives with the Ex, they have all been destroyed. No images mean they never existed.

Well, he did use a Sure Shot for the photos.

Next time, bring along an F3 with a later model MD-4 loaded with alkalines. That way, they think someone's using an iPhone to take pics, when you're taking the photos. After all, an iPhone sounds like a quiet F3/MD-4 combo. Camera shutter sound sample is of one.

I can't help thinking how much better it would have been if you had brought a speed Graphic instead.
