Does anybody have any experience with this scanner? Any information?

I have the opportunity to buy one cheap and the reviews and information on the web looks promising but I was hoping for some more first hand experience.

I think the Nikon Coolscan is the desktop scanner of note. If it were real cheap I would be (God, I cannot believe I am saying this) temped to get it.

See, it wasn't that hard to admit.

Seriously, my wife makes calendars, web pages, etc. and has a need to get the pictures in digital form. She has a nice digital camera, but that doesn't help her when I take real pictures. We have a decent flatbed but I have never been entirely happy with the results for pictures. When this opportunity came up, I was wondering if it was worth it. I'm going to try it out and will buy it if I'm happy with it.

I have no hands on experience with the LS-30 but I do have with the LS-40.

After strugling with flatbad scanners and adaptors, I decided to get a desktop scanner. The LS-30 was out of scope after reading the specs. I don't remember what was the reason of ruling out the LS30, but I quickly concluded that for my purposes three are only three possible Nikon candidates: LS2000, LS4000 and LS40.

Since the LS2000 is no longer manufactured, plus it would need a SCSI controller and costs nearly the same as the LS40, I went for the LS40; I am satisfied with it. Indeed the pro version (LS4000) has more features and accessories, but I am happy witht he image quality of the LS40. I would consider the LS40.
