I would use the MN-30 for the extra 1/2 fps but I wouldn't care for rechargeable for the film camera. The cost of disposable batteries is insignificant compared to the film/processing cost.

And on a side note, it's a bright day outside, so shot half a roll of film in various exposure modes. Tomorrow it's expected to rain, so maybe I have time to finish the roll in cloudy weather. Had an "issue" with random exposures after I trip the shutter, but then I remembered to lock the side shutter release. D'oh!

Yeah that's happened to me a couple times. Sucks when it's set to CH when it happens.

If you want to save film with the F5 just shoot it at 1 sec shutter speed, makes for creative swirls too.

Here's a pic of an MN-30 in somewhat better condition, after a rebuild. That looks a pretty simple task: both battery strips and battery welders cost peanuts. Maybe strips aren't necessary if one uses tabbed cells, but tabless + new strips has worked better for me in the past. And since it's all Ni-MH, you don't have to calculate the tradeoff between capacity, charge rate and discharge rates as you would with Li-Ion.



If you don't want to do it yourself, any company that can rebuild computer battery packs would have no problem with this.

Here's a pic of an MN-30 ...

Digikey makes up custom battery packs. They are all strapped and welded, you just solder on to the +/- tabs of the back. They carry all the odd battery sizes.

For an MN30 pack they are going to need a good sketch and some photos.

Do you have to crack open the case? or is it assembled with screws? I don't have a MN-30 to rebuild but if I have to break it open then reglue it I don't want to do it. I rebuilt the MN-2 pack for the F3 because I can take it apart easily.

How much money you paid for the film vs batteries? I don't think the batteries cost is significant. So unless you want 8fps instead of 7.4fps using disposable batteries in the F5 makes a lot more sense but you need the MN-30 with its 10 cells and not 8. Alkalines tend to leak and if you don't want to use them because you worry that they might leak then it's OK but their performance is much better than 8 AA rechargeables.

Alright folks, test roll processed, I scanned some samples at work (excuse the home-made negative holder, and no obvious defects or light leans. I don't remember which frames were in auto-mode, manual, and etc, but they were mostly well exposed.

I think you're good to go! F5 is a great camera.
