I can think of only two, the SB-12 and SB-16(A)

Neither of them will fit an F2 or F without an adapter as they are both for the F3. Similarly the SB800 needs an AS-17 to give TTL flash with an F3.

I know for sure that the F2 and F3 hot shoes are not the same but I am not sure if the F and F2 are the same?

Thank you for the education, I figured there must be at least one, but didn't go check, so I stuck with what I knew about.

The F and F2 are the same, the F3 added additional contacts for the newer functionality. As mentioned, the F2 has a pin on the prism for the ready light, but it's not incorporated in the flash coupling shoe.

I don't remember because my F2AS was stolen in 84 but I think you can't even mount an F2 flash on the F3 and vice versa. I think the dimension of the rails are different.

I'm learning all sorts of obscure stuff in this thread.
You're right, the F/F2 rails are narrower than the F3's. It looks like it is so the extra contacts can be accommodated. I had always assumed they were the same, but never actually had a reason care.

But, Nikon has us covered it seems, the AS-3 adaptor will couple a F/F2 style flash to an F3, and an AS-5 adaptor goes the other way.
