I'm still on the fence about upgrading from my D700 but tests like these are pushing me in that direction. I plan on taking my D700 down to the local cameras store and shooting the same images with the same lenses on both cameras. When I get home and can do some real world evaluation then I will decide.

I must say the D800 looks to be a really sweet rig and I am lusting.

I don't think I would put too much emphasis on the DxOMark tests. My ZD MF back has the same overall score as my D200. There is absolutely no comparison in image quality, the ZD blows past the D200 in resolution, color depth, noise and the images just look better. Plus I can extract shadows & hightlights with the ZD raw images vastly more without any significant degradation.

That being said...... If I had a spare $4k I would be on the waiting list.

I'm due for an upgrade as well.... There is a chance Nikon may come out with another body that is more of a replacement of D700. Apparently, Nikon thought D800 as a brand new camera to entice MF crowd rather than an upgrade to the D700....

It's quite a bit too pricey for my hobby budget though.

drool....

Well, this war is gonna forever, i didn't want to wait to see who is the winner if it is really logical comparison.
I bought my digital MF back in 2009 and i compared that to my DSLR Canon 1Ds3, no comparison, even with some newest cameras, tested against one friend 5D mk3, again my digital MF won the competition in everything except the fps, high ISO, and quick focus, so for the color and sharpness and DR my digital MF will hold itself another class over Canon and Nikon years after years until Canon and Nikon produces larger sensor for there DSLRS, then they will jump to MF class, means for me as long the MF has larger sensor it will be always higher on some factors than smaller 35mm DSLRs, if i want MF i go with MF, if i want 35mm i go with 35mm.

Even in film world, MF beats 35mm in terms of sharpness and details, my RZ 6x7 negs beats my Hassy 501CM 6x6, even my Fuji 6x9 looks unbelievable against my RZ 6x7, so if people keep dreaming to have the power of MF on 35mm DSLR and say about 20% of the price then i think they will dream forever, because i believe when the 35mm DSLR reach say 80mp then digital MF will be dancing in 150-300mp club, that time i still will go with MF over 35mm DSLR anytime.

They look awesome for times when you need that much image.

Can't wait till D700's start showing up cheap on the market. I need a backup!

I will get an 800 eventually. But another 700 is the priority at this point. It is getting tiresome using my 10D as a second body at weddings alongside the vastly superior D700.
