The built-in hood versions are AiS (which came out after AI). Some denigrate the built-in hood as being flimsy/floppy, but I like the convenience, and it gets the job done!

I was going by my own faulty memory. But yes, I also like the built-in hood. Mine became a little warped at one point, but it was easily fixed.

I converted mine with a dremel and made an f-stop marking strip with a label maker. It's not absolutely perfect looking but it works and has no issues. It was a bit of a laborious and noisy process but not the end of the world.

And they won't fall of and get stepped on.

Well, to be fair, there is the (somewhat hard to find) HN-8 screw-in hood for the 105's, and it of course will not fall off! The HS- series (so called "snap-on") hoods can indeed fall off, but have the advantage that they can mount in reverse, and even take the standard 52mm cap in that position. The worst hoods are the HK- series "Klamp-on" which really do fall off very easily. That's why I've been through 3 HK-2 hoods for my 24/2, not to mention the completely useless HK-7 for my 28/1.4D, which in addition to being way too shallow to be much use, only really stays on if you don't have a filter, and otherwise can be knocked off by a stiff breeze.

The ultimate built-in hood is the one for the 105/2 DC, which locks into place via threads when deployed: Now _that's_ a nice design!

The older 135/2.8 Nikkor Q and QC (and I think the 'K' version) have hoods that pull out, twist and lock into place.

Hi Ralph, sorry for my late reply. In the UK eBay user “suncity1967” is offering a specialist machining service for pre AI lenses. This is not an endorsement of the service, I just found it when searching for lenses.

Thanks. Luckily, every country still seems to have a few of these. At around $50, it's well worth it. The original aperture ring conversion kits sold out years ago. So, machining is the only option now.

Yes, if you want to use them on a modern Nikon body. In my case I got a Nikkormat for pre AI Lenses on film, and I have a converter to LUMIX S5 for digital.

I'm not ready to get a different body for non-AI, but I'm willing to have all non-AI converted to make use of spectacular old Nikon glass. my 'new' AI'd 10f/2.5 should arrive soon.
