I just bought a Nikkor 400mm F3.5 AIS lens in excellent condition apart from the fact that there is fungus on the rear elements. I was able to buy the lens for half what this lens in this condition would cost. I haven’t been able to get any information about how best work on this lens, but it seems pretty straightforward. I’ve done my homework, but I’m wondering if anyone here has ever worked on this lens and has any tips?

I've moved your thread to the Camera Repairs subforum.

I would start with a soft cloth and warm pure water. If it comes off maybe try some 91% isopropyl alcohol. If it's chewed up or in the cement between elements could be quite a job.
