Thoughts from Jim Galli...

I received this from Jim:

"I think the main thing will be a historic mining theme. We have the Tonopah Historic Mining Park where we can photograph all of the historic structures, both inside and out. Then there is just the general old buildings and shacks about town. Then we also might enjoy trekking to Goldfield one day. There's a pristine desert scenic area about 35 miles W of town that no one knows about, and finally, it might be fun to have some evening sessions in my upstairs studio using the giant studio 9a camera and some of the soft focus lenses. This would only work for a smaller group but those with an interest in soft focus lenses would really get excited about the possibilities.

One other possibility for a smaller group would be a local machine shop and foundry that has been in biz here same family since 1903. The machine shop is vintage 1910 or so with original jack shaft / belt system in use. I don't want to overwhelm that guy though."

In addition to Jim's ideas we will plan informal discussions about technique and look at prints. Also as many of you know Jim has a unique affection for old optics - some of which may be for sale? (Keep cash and checkbook under lock in order to avoid serious temptation!!!)

Finally - if anyone is interested - I am planning to make a short presentation about what I consider absolute paramount in creative photography: "Understanding and capturing the essence of an image".

Jim is trying to get group rates at a motel in town, and there should be opportunity for camping as well!

Sharon & I would love to attend. Not sure if we will be able to yet. It depends on work and if we are moving to Boise about that time (I have a tentive job offer there, its a matter of when they want me there.)

Will do our best to go. The shoot out in Winnemucca is a week or two before the Tonopah Trip! Cool! Jay, we can detour through Reno or go the other way. I believe we can get at least 2 of us from Boise to head south, maybe more. It will be really great!

A bit of info about Tonopah...

The boomtown of Tonopah was born in 1900,
when Jim Butler accidentally discovered rich
silver ore while chasing a wayward burro.
Butler's discovery eventually produced more
than $150 million in ore and spawned Nevada's
last great mining rush.

Today, Tonopah and adjacent parts of central Nevada represent the
final chapter in the settlement of the American
west. Located at an elevation of 6020 feet amidst
the hilly terrain of the San Antonio mountains,
Tonopah straddles modern US Hwy 95, and
serves as a pleasant stopover for travelers
halfway between Las Vegas and Reno.

Tonopah is blessed with near ideal air quality
characterized by clear skies and gentle winds.
The past and present exist side by side in this
turn-of-the-century Nevada mining town, and
Tonopah is one of the best places in the state
for you to get a feel for Nevada's colorful history.

Per, I'm working on trying to get a block of rooms at the Best Western Hotel in town. (16X20 Galli prints in every room!) The best so far is corporate rate of $59 / nite. This weekend I'll visit with the folks and shoot for $49. As soon as I've got a number to throw at them the better (even if it's a guess.) They're good folks and won't hold me to it.

Check out the Tonopah pages at my little web page;

What is the typical weather to expect at this time? (night and day)

Also, are there some good campgrounds iin the area Jim? Facilities or no?

Thanks

Weather is a crap shoot! I chose those dates because right around Easter it really turns on the beginning of warm beautiful days. but if the weather gods are displeased....it can snow 16 inches, or rain 5 days in a row, or the wind can blow. Mostly it's very nice then. Unlike later summer months where it gets warm enough that you get very lazy mid-day. Nights in March will be very cool for those thinking of camping.

I would love to come, but I doubt that Jim would allow a color photographer in his backyard.

Robert, I am sure you already know this, but I am going to say it any way!
Jim has spent many years doing color work, and I for one can vouch that he is no "slouch" when it comes to seeing, composing and exposing and making wonderful color images. He is actually one of those guys that are telling the truth when he says "been there and done that"!

Gee Charlie. Made me blush with all that praise. Actually I'm expecting some color folks. Tonopah sits on a hill that looks west across the big open "Lower Big Smoky Valley" to the Monte Cristo range. We lack in most of the lucious spring colors that come to mind, but make up for it with our sunsets. Take a look at my little web page for some earlier color work there. You're right though, other than making my daily living I haven't done much personal work in color lately.

No worries, it was more of a joke than anything else. The time I went to one of Per's workshops, there were only two of us who shot color - outnumbered by all the B&W people.

Jim,
Have any of the Motels etc. committed to or firmed their prices yet?

Charlie......................
The Best Western High Desert Inn has given me a quote of $59 / night. I'm going to try to shmooze them down to $49 but no promises yet. More later today.

I hope this is appropriate to post here, but may I ask who is attending (at least, so far) the workshop? Also...is there going to be any type of group meetup at the airport to possibly ride in to Tonopah together? That's a heck of a drive from Vegas!

I was hoping to attend, but it looks like hubby will be heading that way without me. Maybe next time!! I'll be there in spirit though.

Look forward to hearing how things are coming along for this.

Dorothy...

So far about 16 people say "for sure" - if the numbers keep growing my guess is that we will be over 20 - perhaps 25. We are still over a month away so its a bit difficult to say right now. By March 1st we should have a tally of sorts.

A few people are coming north from Vegas.

As plans are set firmly in the ground we could work out car pooling from Vegas, as several people will come from Arizona and some from Southern California...

Did you email me already?

Hi Per,
Yep! I emailed you. But when I didn't receive a response, I tapped Jim on the shoulder and he filled me in on some questions I had. I've been having some 'issues' (I'm being polite with that term) with my email, so my note to you may not have made it across. I can resend whatever info you may need if you'd like.

At this point...my husband will be the one flying in for the workshop. Something I know he's really looking forward to. He's a registered member/subscriber here on apug...just not as 'vocal' as I am.

Looking forward to hearing whatever you guys have planned for the workshop. Sounds like it a great experience. Wish I could be there!!!!!!

Tonopah Historic Mining Park!

Thought perhaps I would re-generate some excitement! The photo below was made an hour ago inside the Tonopah Historic Mining Park. I had the #8 Cirkut camera set up for my first ever Cirkut panoramic. I made a neg 8" high by 6 feet long! 270 degrees. Value of the neg is of course TBD.

THMPCirkut_1.jpg

I talked to the nice folks at the park about the work shop. They said if there are 20 or more, a one time fee of $20 will get us the run of the place for all three days! What they did suggest and I will follow up closely is that they would love to have a finished print from each of the photographers involved for their permanent collection.

Jim,

I'd have to add a room on just to hang that print,

also an 8' developing tube would never fit in my darkroom.. :D

Oh and Jim, could you melt off some of those highlights before I get up there.....SBR is a bit much....for my taste!

Thanks Dave!! I was scratching my head wondering how the heck I would develop a 7' piece of film when I read your post. I know you were jesting, but I went straight to the back yard and cut a 7 1/2 foot piece os 3" s**t pipe, and the film slides in and fits perfectly. Off to the hardware store to buy some end caps!

My wife and I are planning to head the old *Jaguar towards Tonapah for the big doings. Will be the first ime in several years that I have attended a "workshop" on any thing other than "living History" so am looking forward to it.

I have not officially signed anything, doe's that mean I can't attend? Have emailed Per as to our intentions, but am still waiting for a reply.
