hmm.. dont know about that, like you say the curve shown in your previous post is quite aggressive.

On a side issue what is the paper feed like on the 3100? for the 3200 sheet feeding transparency film was challenging to say the least!

feeding either sheet or roll with the 3100 isn't an issue at all. I've never had to resort to putting a white piece of paper/tape on the edges to have it recognizrd

ok.. z3200 up and running

here's the first pass at a step wedge processed on the z3100. It's been a fairly typical curve.. both on an epson 7600 & the hp z3100 (not using QTR for the Epson).

It has always been a struggle to get really delicate high key and low key images... that curve making posterization really hard to avoid.

The first pass at the hpz3200 using the digital negative printer profile discussed here , gives me this curve

i am a *VERY* happy printer.

thank you Angel!!!

Interesting feedback, I had nothing but problems with the Z3200 and was glad to get rid of it, the fact that it only uses two inks and sometimes only one bothered me as this is what we were doing some years ago in creating digital negatives.

In the next few months I will be testing the Jon Cone digital negative system which use 7 variations of black to create negatives on my 7880, initial reports from Sandy King are promising and show that the system offers increased resolution. Will update when my review has finished.

i haven't tried the new inkset by Cone, but i imagine you're correct. If I were looking for the best possible solution for digital negatives, I'd buy an Epson printer and dedicate it to that (in fact, I may still pick up a 3880 just for that purpose). The z3200 is for a combination of printing both color, b/w inkjet as well as digital negatives (using the same system for platinum over pigment prints takes an order of difficulty out of the equation). I was a long time user of Epson, although the 7600 was my last model. Not being a large volume printer, I had constant nozzle clogs, and had to work through those before many printing sessions. I got my z3100 in 2006, and have had only a single issue (drive belt replacement.. which i was able to do myself easily). Have not had a single clog the entire time. I know everyone has different experiences with brands.. so I'm not assuming that my experience is everyone else's.

*Please* post your findings about the Cone negative inks when you've played around with them. Pretty sure there's a smaller Epson in my future to use with those.

wasn't able to print this image out before the z3200. (photoshop curve was a bit extreme to get the gradation in the high end)

I think i'll save up and get an epson 3880 & cone's inkset as well..

(the scan picked up some of the paper texture in the print... as always.. looks much better as an actual print)

Dave & Jim, keep us posted on the Cone digital negatives, if you go that route. I too have been looking into converting my 3800 to the cone inks.

Just digging this thread up. Still using the HPZ3200, have had zero issues with it. HP, on the other hand, apparently has new marketting people. They've removed all information about the profiles and instructions necessary to print Digital Negatives. After calling their support team, they asked th eir marketing people where the info could be found, They inisist they've never had anything to do with Digital Negatives.. all videos have been pulled from youtube as well.. Since the material doesn't apparetly exist.. I have the complete set of documentation, profiles for both alt process negatives and silver print negatives, I asked them if i could post that i had them and give them out.. they still didn't know anything about them. If you have or are getting a HPz300.. feel free to contact me for the files

thanks! (previous username jimcollum, but password reset succeeds, but have no idea where it's being sent to. So have created a new account

Hi, just got an old HPZ3200. Would you be so kind to share the files?
Thanks
