I found this site over at phote dot net : should be good read at least I feel so: [Dead Link Removed ]

The new tlr sounds great :

Thanks for that, I really enjoyed the articles in the newsletter. I'm not a Rollei user but I do use a Mamiya TLR for portraits.

Thanks a lot for the link. I first came across Inta Ruka and her work a few months ago via a Turkish photo magazine and very much appreciate her photography and attitude. It's great that her work has found more publicity.

Cheers,

It's good news that the Tele Rolleiflex FT has now surfaced as there seemed some doubt at one point whether Rollei would continue with it. The bayonet IV for attachments means that filters etc will cost a fortune but as the camera will too, I don't suppose that will worry prospective purchasers.

It's surprising that none of the current Rollei TLR's can take 220 film. As this camera is primarily for portraiture, I would have thought that facility would have been particularly relevant.

Worth several times its weight in gold?

When I bought my 4.0FW in February 2004 there was little difference between the price of the FW and that of the original Wide - $3,250 vs around $3,000 - and Wides are not plentiful. Finding Bay IV filters is a problem, and the cost of the Bay IV lens hood for the 4.0FW is unjustifiable, in my opinion. I bit the bullet and bought one though - for $250.

The 4.0FT is a different matter for those of us who wish to use our cameras, because Teles are comparatively easy to find. As I remarked in (there was a url link here which no longer exists) you could buy a Tele with both Rolleinars, a Maxwell screen, and full lens and body CLA for much less than the 4.0FT. The original Tele uses Bay 3 hoods and filters, which are far easier to get than Bay IV - I haven't seen a Bay IV hood listed yet for the 4.0FT, but I guess that one will become available. In the early days of the 4.0FW there were more FWs than there were lens hoods for it. The comparatively close-focusing ability of the 4.0FT does make it attractive - it depends on how much of a hindrance one finds the Rolleinar 0.35.

Best,
Helen

The prices people have mentioned are interesting because in the UK new wideangle Rollei's seem to be priced around the £4000 mark which roughly equates to US $ 8000! So the one on the B&H website is almost a "bargain". It's another example I'm afraid of the "Rip-off Britain" syndrome. Everything technical always seems to cost more here.

You could go to the factory and hand pick one for that price difference. (and probably have change left over for another trip).

I love my Rollei. I inherited it from my dad when he passed away and I must say I have probably taken 80% of my favorite photos with it.

I've now discovered that new wideangle Rollei's can be obtained for under £3000 in the UK (about US $6000) so I think prices have dropped or maybe it is to do with the pound/euro exchange rate changing. Anyway it's all academic at the moment, even at half that price I couldn't afford it! Which is a pity, as I'd love one. Maybe one day........
