Maybe interesting this press release from Rollei. It's clearly they stay in the analog market and want to continue together with Maco their business. Same like more or less the Ilford statement a few months ago.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I am glad to hear that the wooden box doesn't inflate the price -- I'd hate it to a a pretentious cost-inflator for the sake of pointless status, like a Leica "anniversary" box, the boxes for elaborate specialty Barbie dolls (often 50% of the mfgr'ing price or more is in the display box!) or a BMW
BMW special editions come with an elaborate display box? Motorcycles, cars, or both? Is this what they mean by a "boxer"? Buy a car, get a garage thrown in? How do you get it home? Is it "laser engraved" like the Leica boxes? And how do you fit it into a bank vault for storage while it appreciates?

I do like the Rollei film boxes. Hope they're available in the US. JandC?

This nice beechwood box from Bayern is cheeper in production than 6 different seperate paper packings for these films. In my price list the prices of R3 are unchanged pro 10 135-36 or 12 120 rolfilms in this box.
12x 120 rolfilm R3 at Eur. 4,10 will be the same price for 1 box with 12x 120 rolfilm R3 (Eur. 49,20 - Our Fotohuis prices -). So this box is for "free", for storing your negatives, pencils, post stamps, whatever, so what's the big deal?

Best regards,

Robert

PS. Here some preliminary tests done by Wolfgang Moersch of the new Rollei Infrared-400. He was very positiv of this film.

Which translates to over $5 US for a roll of 120 film.

Do you really believe that the wood box isn't being added to the price for looks sake? A cardboard box the same size as the wooden one that costs 15 cents would work just as well.

Every other film manufacturer packages their film in cardboard, Maco must really be onto something here cutting costs and all!

We'll probably carry them. If 3 customers buy 4 rolls a piece who gets the box?

The one who's recently had a pet hamster pass away? Someone with a collection of BMW "matchbox" cars?

Otherwise, you could sell them off to a pet mortuary. I hear they get good money for wooden boxes.

As for building the price of the box into the film at $5/roll; given the price of Rollei R^3, should each roll come in it's own individual ebony casket?

BTW, I love your plastic rollfilm canisters. I have a friend who shoots 120 nature on the road a lot, for several weeks at a time. I got him 40 of your canisters as a gift.

Are we off-topic yet?

The IR film looks really nice. The Retro film sounds really nice. The price sounds high and the box is a waste.

I look forward to the US introduction and hope they do well. I also hope the boxes are dropped and the price comes down a bit.

I would think that it would be novel if the initial launch came in the box.

For those who shoot a lot of film it would become a bother to have all the extra packaging. If you are one of those who spend 2.50 a roll on film I suspect they'd figure your getting more box than film.

Another thought on the wooden boxes; keep the wooden boxes, make some mods, and introduce a line of Rollei branded pinhole rollfilm cameras. Use the proceeds to lower the price of the film. Or we customers could do that ourselves.

Pan 25

I've used the Pan25 in 120 format and it's a joy to use, develop and print.
Now I'm going to give a try to the Retro 400 in 135.

I wrote a first look to the pan25 here Dead Link Removed with a sample of a print, if anyone is interested.

From Muihlinn's link above, the Pan 25 sounds a lot like the Maco IR with regard to not squeegeeing the film afterward. I assume this means it is a soft emulsion, correct? I developed one roll of the Maco IR and followed the directions not to squeegee (instead rinsing in distilled water w/o a wetting agent), and I still got water spots on almost every frame. I don't know if the water was really not pure enough, or does the action of any water (even distilled) droplet drying produce spots? Any suggestions? I would be more likely to buy it if I didn't have to jump through a lot of hoops to get it to dry properly.

Thanks,
Jerry

I have no real explanation for this, but I have no problems with drying spots - on any film. Wash properly, and hang to dry. I did have some drying spots many years ago when I used wetting agents, but the spots went away when I stopped using it.

BTW, my tap water is very soft and slightly acidic.

An example of the new Rollei PAN25 film, 35mm, E.I. 25, AM74 1+9, 5:30 Min. 20 degrees C.

Just a bit over developed, 0,74 logD on the greycard. Not to bad.
and yes, a Dutch girl on a real Dutch windmill.

Best regards,

Robert

With all respect, if that`s how this film looks, it will not sell much..
Looks pretty awful to me, unsharp and grainy...
If you have other examples, please post them.

Thanks Fred for your comment, but the picture was nice even with the greycard a little misaligned. We are using reflection tape on the greycard (horizontal and vertical) so that you can see it's OK in lighting.

@blix: We have arranged a new website for this model, pictures are made on Rollei PAN25 and R3, testcamera M7 with Summicron 2,0/50mm. Yes, this scan was not in its optimum way, but if you want: Up from next week the Rollei trial kits are ready and transport costs within Europe will be on our costs. Both will be ready next week.

Have a nice weekend,

I love the fact that they are innovating and trying to push film forward, But somehow their lineup looks a lot like the Maco film that have been around for a while...

I have no problem with that, and if Maco and Rollei work together to make a better product and to keep it available for the coming years, all the best...

I wish them all the best !
