New Newby Noob

Hey guys, new to the forums and also new to photography. I'm currently attending (going to attend in a couple days) a government funded program, for B&W film photography. Everything is provided for free and when i heard about this i was quite excited as film photography is something i've always had an interest in, but was too costly to get into. So yeah i have a great opportunity now, and i'd like to learn as much as i can, so i can make the most of it!

I will be using my Nikon Ftn, which my dad gave me. The meter does not work, as i can't get batteries for them. I'm hoping to get a hang of the sunny 16 rule, and experimenting around with the oldschool way. If anyone can give me some handy tips for starting out that would be much appreciated!

sunny 16
Very sunny, bright day with few clouds

"zone" 15 more normal sunny day -less rare
13/14 is about your average day/most times of day
11+ is dull/rainy overcast

less than 10 is sunset times

6+ is what I use for quite dark/night street photography with "lots" of lights etc

Night photography in rural areas is 0 and below
-6 is pure darkness

I interpolate from there

Welcome to APUG. The Nikkormat was one of the first cameras I used, bought one recently in fairly good shape and I must say it's one of the best cameras out there.
Mine had a 50mm F2 HC which is so sharp and well made that when you handle modern lenses you feel they are cheap %$&**

The Nikkormat was my first camera, and though I haven't used it in a long time, I still have it, broken meter and all. Easy enough to find a hand held meter, too!!

Welcome from the west coast. My first 35mm when I was in high school had no meter. I used the sunny 16 rule and got really good at exposure by eye, even indoors. I think it's a great way to start.

Suryo... welcome to APUG from western Massachusetts. There are several of small, inexpensive hand-held meters out there. Enjoy the forums here, lots of info and friendly help available.
