The reference I made about the springs being dangerous is because there's a lot of tension
on them and they will do some serious cutting to your fingers if they slip & run into the fleshy bits.
It's something to be aware of but not paranoid about.
To take almost all the tension off the factory Omega springs, move the carriage to the top of the column, use the carriage lock to secure the carriage, and only then disengage the hooks. Do not let the tapes whip up to the roller and I usually secure the tapes at the hooks with small c-clamps just to make them more manageable. I had to replace a couple one time and this made a big difference. After you replace the springs on the column, unlock the carriage and pull it all the way down to expose the tape, clean the tape with lighter fluid or white spirits and then relube with a tiny bit of Vaseline or white grease. BTW if you are using a really light weight head, Omega used to recommend only using one spring but for any modern head you should use both.
