Yes and it's very important to eat it with a runcible spoon :D

When eaten raw, it's extremely sour. My dad used to cut them up in slices which he dipped in baking soda (bicarb) to neutralize the acid. Then it was quite palatable. Cooked and served with custard it makes a great dessert. Quince jam or jelly is quite popular over here.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that it is used in some marmalade recipes.

California does have agricultural inspection stations at road entry points to the state - it's not about protectionism, as there are no customs or tariffs on taking things from one state to another (Except alcohol due to our Puritan heritage). In practice though, the road inspection stations are more about commercial quantities than about individuals with a handful of fruit. I've never been inspected in a passenger car.

When I lived in Los Angeles 20+ years ago there were signs along some freeways that said "NO BACKYARD FRUIT MOVING", which took me a while to figure out. I don't know if they are still there, and the orange industry has largely moved far outside of LA, but at the time they were still concerned about even moving pests from one end of the county to another.

Yes it is, my grandmother in Spain used to make some delicious quince marmalade, goes amazing with cheese, especially blue cheese.

In California it is all about insect and agriculture disease control.

This is not correct unless you cleared US customs from your departure airport. It's common in Canada, and maybe others, but I've never cleared US customs in London. Once you come into contact with any hold baggage, you have lost your "cleared by security" status and need to be re-screened.

I've cleared US customs in Toronto and then flown to Denver via Chicago. The Chicago transfer happens without re-screening.

I fly from a London airport (LGW or LHR) to a US hub airport such as CVG, ATL or ORD. At London my cabin bag is X-rayed and I give my hold luggage to the check in staff who no doubt send it to be CT scanned. At CVG, ATL or ORD I enter the USA and have to clear customs...after I clear immigration control (which becomes rather easy when you've entered/left dozens of times). So I take my cabin bag off the plane and head to immigration and then to baggage reclaim where my hold luggage is returned to me so I can take it through customs. The hold luggage is re-checked and I don't know if it is scanned again, but I assume it could be because it goes into the system with all the people who's journey starts at CVG, ATL or ORD. I then wait, have a drink or meal until it's time to head to the gate for my ongoing flight. I do not have my cabin bag re-scanned at any point. The first couple of times I did this, I asked if I should go through some more security and was told "no". Sometimes I have a third leg (eg....LGW to CVG, CVG to SLC, SLC to BOI). In this instance because I have cleared US customs at CVG, my bags are automatically transferred to the third flight from SLC to BOI without any further checks as far as I know. And again, I wait at SLC, have a beer in the one bar that serves it, and fly onto BOI without any inspection of my cabin bag.

Perhaps other countries are different but it seems unlikely. The assumption is that the first airport scanned all the luggage for dangerous items. Airports such as SFC do have dogs sniffing for fruit and sometimes when going through US customs an agent might ask to look inside luggage or cabin bags for banned foodstuffs. Hasn't happened to me but I have seen it happen. What I do notice is that when I go through immigration and my passport is scanned, two screens full of comings and goings come up. The agent there knows I'm unlikely to be a risk.

'twas different for a couple of years after I lived in the USA with a green card and then renounced my residency. I got extra grilling as they apparently consider people who have renounced US residency an immigration risk. Which seems odd. But hey...just like security at LHR they're polite if you're compliant and have answers to all their questions.

Been doing this nearly 25 years now...well not for a couple of years due to plague. What still amazes me is that I can arrive from a transatlantic flight as fresh as a daisy, then wait an hour in an airport and become covered in sweat.

My Customs Canada experience pre-dated the internet, and the encyclopedia at home was no help .
Yeah, we can learn so much more, so much more easily now, via the internet...including falsehoods and misrepresentations

Returning to Denver from San Diego this week, in the B concourse security lines I recognized that they had both the older and newer scanners. When I asked the screener about film she quite readily said I could pick either line, would definitely need a hand search at the newer one, but could ask for one at either line.

I have 350 rolls of film on the way to the Faroe Islands via FedEx, it is currently in Paris at the hub. I printed out the nifty Do Not X-ray labels that Kodak offered online and also made my own Danish and put them on all 6 sides of the box. I also put in letters in both languages explaining what I am up to.

I am looking for either a lab in Copenhagen or someone who lives there to soup a test roll for me. I plan on bringing up to 20 rolls as hand check carry on to get me through the week of the workshop while I wait to get the test roll back. I might have to make separate post asking for the test roll assistance.

With the film now in Europe, I sure hope I can get over there ok given the Covid explosion.

Complicated. EU is currently recommending travel restrictions be adopted by its member countries, but it is up to individual countries on how they treat US travellers.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/trav...tizens-travel-to-europe-right-now/5650306001/

"European Union's decision Monday to remove the United States from its list of safe countries due to a spike in COVID cases, essentially recommending a ban of nonessential travel such as vacations, adds more confusion to the mix for travelers with plane tickets or plans in the works to visit Europe this fall."

" 'I would imagine most countries will continue to allow in vaccinated Americans,'' he said, noting that many countries rushed to reopen to vaccinated visitors before the EU gave the green light. "If you're unvaccinated you may not be able to travel to as many places in Europe next work or in two weeks as you are able to today.''

"Even before the EU's policy change, some European countries and travel companies had already increased restrictions due to the Delta variant.

"Earlier this month, Germany reimposed restrictions on unvaccinated Americans. Those who are unvaccinated or unable to show proof of recovery will need to self-isolate for 10 days upon arrival. The quarantine period can end on the fifth day with proof of a negative coronavirus test. "

So far both the State Department and Denmark are saying fully vaccinated OCED countries that are orange or better are able to come in for tourism without the need for a PCR test prior to arrival or afterward. It’s a week out today, fingers crossed that the U.S. does not go red.

And my film shows possible arrival today, it is at the sort facility in Copenhagen. It’s all a bit nerve wracking but what can one do.

Given the subject of this thread, it would be supremely ironic if Ai Print doesn't get there safely, but his film does!
Wishing you the best!

I'm planning to travel to Canada soon. so I'm wondering what their policy of "hand check" is. Any idea?

If there are enough pessimists, that will not happen (that the film gets there but he does not).
Opens up a whole new discussion of the power of a collective will, doesn't it? Can we will the revival of film sales if there is enough will for it (see discussion on the thread about: is there really a revival of film photography) :D

Hello everyone, I have some updates.
I am now in the Faroe Islands after some crazy travel days. Of course I am vaccinated and tested negative for Covid two days before leaving as requested by Iceland / Iceland Air. I traveled through the following airports and had no issues with asking for a hand check on my carry on 20 rolls of 120 film:

Aspen Airport / hand check
Denver Airport / hand check
Reykjavik / connection / no hand check needed
Copenhagen Airport / canceled flight to Faroe due to high wind, had to re-check in this morning / hand check

My Fedex package arrived last week in the Faroes and Smyril Line Cargo received it and kept it safe. I put an Apple Airtag in it and had 100X better tracking that way. Upon picking it up, I saw that Taks had inspected it so I am feeling good about no x-ray enroute, the package was marked well with Danish and English no x-ray warnings.

I decided to book this all at business class in order to get priority on everything, boarding, seating and especially baggage. This worked really well in my favor in all regards and I am glad I did it.

So now…..I relax and get ready for two months of dynamic weather and amazing photo opportunities. Nap time…

What or who is Taks (customs?), and how can you be sure the package was not x-rayed? Because your package had been opened?

Great! Really hoping it works out perfectly for you!

How much film total will you have for 2 months?

Yes, customs. Based on the routing I tracked with the AirTag, it went through the same channels as commercial shipments and this was somewhat confirmed by the folks at Smyril when I shared the checkpoints with them. There is no way to know 100% so I still may run a test roll off the lab in Copenhagen.
