An other question, please.
Has anyone bought film online from USA and had it shipped by airmail/courier (not luggage) to Europe and was it fogged by xray.?
Of course the same applies the other way around.

I have bought film from the USA and had it shipped by the vendor (B&H) with no problems. This was in 2017.

I know others who have done similar. I do not know anyone who has received fogged film.

The procedures for freight/mail are different to those for tourist aviation though.

Email I received from CATSA for YVR:

"We recommend that you put undeveloped film and cameras containing undeveloped film in your carry-on baggage or take undeveloped film with you to the checkpoint and ask the screener to conduct a hand inspection."

The last time I asked them in March 2017, they said film is safe up to 400 ISO. I guess not so today. And the last time I asked for a hand inspection, they wanted to open the sealed box of 4x5 film.
Ugh.
........sure we can do a hand-inspection
Excuse me sir, we need you to open these two boxes please. .

I don't know if this has been asked already and it may be a stupid question but if I buy film online from another country and it is posted or sent by courier, how is it scanned for security?
Now I have recently bought film online from UK and from EU and both were courier delivered. The film I shot was ok, no signs of fogging caused by x-ray etc.
I have been wondering the same. I live in usa and shoot mostly Ilford

It has been discussed, and the answer is basically "we don't know", with a frequently offered argument that "film manufacturers probably are aware of this and probably make the necessary arrangements to prevent x-ray damage from happening in transit". But the short answer remains: we just don't know for sure.
Thank You for the info

I have received the courtesy of hand inspection, even from an international (not TSA agent) security agent, and one these two incidents I recall very vividly
  • the agent asked me to break the seals on exposed 120 film so i could unroll it to show the innocence of its contents
  • the agent wanted to see inside the box of 4x5 sheetfilm
  • the agent asked me to fully open the camera body, with the lens removed, and the back removed so he could inspect that the camera itself was not stuffed with drugs/explosives
It was very fortunate that in each incident the security supervisor knew better than the inspection agent, and overheard my pleas about why the first two actions were undesirable. and that was back when film was still not so uncommon among folks carrying camera kits.

Is it not ironic that one of the listed airports is Greater Rochester....?

I flew home from Fargo last week and they were nice enough to warn me about the new scanner and volunteer to hand inspect. They said it would affect the outer couple of layers on the spools. I only hope the don't have the new ones at Denver, where the trip started.

Denver does not have them, went through last week.

If TSA is making people remove their laptops, they are NOT using the new scanners.

Thank you! Since the trip I have been keeping the used and unused film that made the trip separate, until I could process a roll or 2 and find out if it was damaged.

Al the more reason to travel by sailboat.

But not on Titanic II.

Joking aside, I wonder if posting your film ahead to your destination and then posting them home for developing, would that cure the Xray problem?

So much is unknown, because information to the innocent is also letting the smugglers and terrorist how to circumvent detection!

Also, there is no true uniformity of process...posting from Germany could be very different from posting from France or from Afghanistan. And even in US, it might matter which major airport is the departure for a load of mail. And lastly, it might well be that there are randomly chosen sacks of mail, so film in one sack is undamaged, and film in another sack has CT scan exposure. YOU don't know, and neither do the smuggers or terrorists.

Anyone know what the situation is at Edinburgh and Prague airports with these scanners? I'll be travelling through these airports over the next few days and hoping there aren't any CT scanners for carry-on baggage.

Edinburgh didn't have them as of February of last year, but travel has changed a lot since then.

Prague not likely to have CT in Security at Vaclav Havel for carry-on...they just got full body scanning equipment in 2019, up to 10 years after most other places.!

Does anyone know if DFW airport has the new scanners?
For what it's worth, i recently flew out of DFW (and back) with film which was x-rayed in the carry on with no ill effects. The film was 800 speed Fuji Instax.

I then flew back from Boston with some TriX i had shot at 1600 which i developed when I got home. That also suffered no ill effects.

Edit: by "x-ray" I mean scanned. No idea what kind of scanner it was.

Hope this is the case then. No problems flying out of Edinburgh today; they still have the usual scanners there.

Film prices are high in this part of the world, but from now on I will be buying locally. I have sometimes bought a batch from the USA, but the risks of scanning have tipped the scales in favour of supporting the one or two local shops that still remain. It's a pity that using film on overseas or even interstate trips is finished. Asking for hand inspection in this part of the world does not work.

I'm so glad that our uniformed protectors are doing such an outstanding job protecting us from all of the evil no-good-niks out there. I'm sure this small further infringement on our personal liberty will allow them to catch all of the terrorists and drug smugglers. Until, of course, they think of the next small infringement they can impose upon us "for our protection…"

Were they asking people to remove laptops and similar from their carry-on bags before going through the scanning apparatus?
