As of today I'm planning on making the Photorama show on Sun, Dec. 6th in Richfield. I expect to be there in time for the 10 am opening time, and would be happy to hang out with other folks for lunch, perhaps a gallery show, or whatever.

Going to have to pick up that Aperture issue! I'm definitely planning on catching the exhibit as well.

So, the story of how we know Andrew ... Eva & I run a photo group called the Click Collective, as most of you know. It's a small group of about 20 members who get together to share work, critique, go on group shoots, hold gallery shows, etc. Two of the members are our German friends Dan & Silke Seybold, also occasionally seen here on APUG.

Through Dan & Silke, we are friends with Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre, two french photographers shooting 4x5 color work of abandoned buildings, for galleries in Paris. Their website We've toured them around Detroit a few times on day shoots ourselves.

Yves & Romain are friends with Andrew Moore through the shooting of abandoned buildings - Andrew contacted them after seeing their work published. Yves & Romain put Andrew in touch with Dan & Silke, who became fast friends.

Now, whenever any of them come to Detroit, Dan, Silke, Eva or I tour them around the ruins of Detroit. The last few times Andrew came, he stayed with Dan & Silke for the week. When he was in town over the summer, he was kind enough to critique the Dreams show The Click Collective was in the process of putting up at the BBAC.

Andrew's a nice guy and a talented photographer. He knows his way around a darkroom, and still shoots film - 4x5 & 8x10 color mostly.

Is that all clear as mud?

To summarize - acquaintance through mutual friends. I guess I should have said that to begin with.

Great story. Thank you. I had not realized the extent of your group. Sounds very interesting. Hope you will bring some of them down here.

Looking forward to seeing you there. Peter called and said he would also be there. I may have a surprise addition. Final confirmation not in yet.

Darn it, I'm tied up this weekend and won't be able to make it over. Hope you have a great time and find some killer deals! Shawn

Great weekend in NE OH APUG. Bethe stayed with Dolly and me Saturday showing pictures and a little bump that she promises will be a baby boy in early February. We went to the Richfield photo swap meet and celebrated birthday boy Lee Lumpkin’s event a day late. Dale Marsh was there haggling with the vendors. Bethe was in lust with a wide lens, but didn’t take it home. I found some books I liked and will be reading over Christmas. Peter said he would join us, but we missed him. The four of us had lunch down the road, told tall stories, encountered an eavesdropping waitress who thought film must be a lot more fun than digital based on how we were enjoying it. Wish more of you had come, but those that did had fun.

Wish we had come as well! Sounds like a blast - sorry to have missed it.

Miss you too. We need a gathering worthy event to get the gang together.

What have you all been up to this winter?

I got a box of 250 sheets of Ilford 8x10 paper on fleabay for cheap and have been printing at least 3 times a week. Mostly printing small format negatives from my archives. I have printed all my 8x10 negatives multiple times, I'm eagerly waiting for the days to get longer so the sun is out when I'm done with work so I can make more 8x10 negatives.

Since 2005 I have been a very quiet, lurking, member of the Midwest Large Format Asylum http://www.dunnamphoto.com/midwestlf/index.htm. On January 23, 2010 they had “The Third Annual Portfolio Review/Print Show” at a hotel at the entrance to the Indiana Dunes in Chesterton, Indiana, just east of Gary. That is a mere 310 miles one way from here.

16 or 17 members showed work, one at a time, from 9AM to 2:30 PM, on well lighted, combined tables, long enough to accommodate 17 of my matted 7x17 inch prints. It was a great experience with lots of really excellently seen, shot, printed and matted work. As the name implies all work is shot on large format. Most were 4x5, but there were many larger cameras up to 8x20. Most printed silver, but there were several platinum and even carbon prints.

My first impression was a lot of very nice people, fun, but also very serious about photography. They have a traveling outing the third weekend of each month. Most are simply further than I can drive alone. Let that be a segue to conversation for any who might share the ride or caravan in the future.

The print show was Saturday. Sunday they were going to invade a large falling down church in Gary. It was pouring rain Sunday morning so I headed back to OH by way of another love, the Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, IN. I’m told I missed some great shooting with part of the church roof falling in and the floor shaking from the wind and rain howling through the broken out windows. I’ve just never learned how to have fun.

Look forward to meeting some of these good folks. We haven’t picked a weekend yet, but several of them would like to visit one or more of our gatherings when we start having them again in warmer weather. It might even be another good group for you to join.

What have you all been up to this winter? QUOTE]

My teacher (not quite half my age) said she doesn’t want to hear about cold, wet, clouds, snow and ice. I have been out shooting 8x10 with a theme of religious buildings in transition. I will be printing 16x20 for my class. Assuming I survive, that will mean 10 new images every other week, an over matted series of at least twenty images by the first week of May and a paper on Atget. Last term’s required five page paper on Walker Evans came out 17 pages. Lots of work ahead.

I am frightened to think how difficult the monkey on my back will make it when I retire from retirement.

That little bump we saw on Bethe in December should arrive as a beautiful baby boy just about now. Prayers for safe delivery and arrival.

Should be soon! Thanks for the prayers - I think I'll need those as well as drugs.

That's great news! Congratulations Bethe!

Right now is the first chance I've had to get online and check in anywhere (I had my iPhone at the hospital).
Thanks, all!!!
We're both doing ok. I think I've had 4 hours of sleep since Friday, but we both seem to be healthy at this point and that's a good start. The only photos I've taken so far were with my iPhone and digi P&S, so I won't post them here now (and they aren't even downloaded, yet).
oops - gotta go feed! I know, TMI.

Wow! Congrats Bethe, and hello to the little one.

Best,
Daniel

Good job Bethe! I hope baby and mother are both doing well !

On a somewhat unrelated topic, I'll have to admit that I do frequently think of John when I am using my 8x10 enlarger. Knowing that 'someone else' also had the crazy idea to get one of these enlargers made me think that its OK to put an 8x10 enlarger in my basement also.

Well, now I'll be thinking about John every time I process film  I just installed this water mixer Friday night.

Oh well better than the flush John references received since my birth.

Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but the sun has been out the last few weekends. I was able to shoot quite a few nice images lately. For most of the winter, it really had been too dim to even go out.

Shot 16 sheets of 8x10 last week in my wanderings for my “Transitions” series at U Akron. The sun is promised for next week. This weekend we are developing film in the Jobo, five sheets at a whirl. A while back we had 21 days of clouds. The professor said we either drop the class or shoot in the clouds and snow. A little higher filter number helps. Peter and I talked about shooting this weekend, clouds turned to rain, turned to snow. Some time ago the Plain Dealer had an article about the weather. It seems Paris has roughly the same weather we have. In Paris they call it silvery.

Happy Birthdays: last week Bethe who as she puts it will soon be departing for the beach (HI) for a year, and Dorothy tomorrow who is freezing at the Erie beach.
