Jeff S., Glad you enjoyed the half day last time enough to expand to the whole three days. No good deed goes unpunished. We will have to find some work and put you to it. Looking forward to seeing the new prints.

Shawn, Glad you are coming also. I want to hear all about the Michel and Paula workshop. Give us an idea on arrival when you can so we don’t leave you out of anything. I am hoping either you or Lee L. can lead the early birds into the ledges by way of Happy Days Saturday. Otherwise I’ll have to get up and we can’t have that.

Dorothy, I sure hope you make it. Your IR shots last time were really great. Besides you put a whole new perspective on things that I really enjoy.

Jeff B. This certainly is not your summer for Ohio. Dolly, the girls and I are just going to have to go over to the Country Maid to consider the meaning of all that. My first guess is that the inner meaning is Peaches and Cream, but I will get back to you on that.

I should know by Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest, John. If I'm there I'd be happy to. I have a feeling Lee and I would be going anyway, he's been my partner in all the early morning adventures!

John, my schedule looks good for attending Sat. and/or Sunday. I have lots of new prints from 8x10 negatives to show. I recently got a 125mm super wide to use on 8x10 and those prints have turned out pretty nice.

Dale, Great. Glad you are coming. Should I email Bill or is he reading Apug now?

Curiously I have not heard from him since leaving for his new Job. I think he has some vacation time before he actually starts. Hopefully we will hear from him soon.

The fog has cleared over my schedule - it looks like I will be in town next weekend and can attend. I am looking forward to seeing all at John's.

NOAA is forecasting sunny and clear for the weekend. Which, actually, I find not nearly as nice as lite overcast for shooting B&W; Cleveland is decidedly a B&W type of place.

Glad you are coming Nicholas. I've read that Paris has the same weather and they call it "silvery." Maybe we just need an attitude adjustment.

Just got a PM saying that Bob Curtis would also be joining us on Saturday.

This is beginning to look like a party. We are up to thirteen now with a couple of regulars not heard from yet and a couple more of possibly new people waiting to learn if they can have Friday release from employers. You all come.

Rick sent me the following question. I felt the question and answer might be beneficial to anyone considering the event.

“After looking at some of the websites you posted, those "ledges" look pretty interesting along with some of those canyons. Have you spent much time exploring those areas, or are there usually too many humans around to get any clean shots?

Rick”

Having just watched a segment of "True Blood", I am not sure how to relate to "too many humans around to get any clean shots?" One gathering five or six went at sun up to the ledges. I arrived at 8:00 AM and hiked in with the dogs. There was one car other than our groupe's in the parking lot and a ranger. While I was parking a pretty little girl drove in and dropped her male passenger to pick up his car, assumedly left for their all night adventure. When I returned a half hour later the ranger was still chewing out the boy for the trouble an unaccounted for car had caused them. No additional cars had arrived. Try that at noon and you will be swamped with "humans."

John

A little more.

When you get here I will hand out overall maps of the park. From that you will be able to find everything from our house or your motel. For now go to http://www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/upload/Ledges_WEB2009.pdf and assume you will know how to get there with the map I give you.

This park opens at sunrise. Before that you can hike in from the north. Assuming you go at sunrise, park at the Ledges Shelter. From there you can access the east side (morning sun). If you go to the furthest north, marked steps, for the hand built steps that are there and climb down to the lower end you will see what we have enjoyed. You can continue south along the eastern edge and see: moss and lichen, rock features pulling away from the cliffs, streams coming out of the rocks, trees with roots growing down the sides of the cliffs, trees falling down the cliffs and caves. It is a very interesting area.

I'm in the processes of building a new website so this is not up to date with my recent "ledges" work... but many of these were made at "John's Ledges" very early in the morning. And as John said, in the early hours people are not an issue. Just click on the word below.

Shawn,

These are really great. Thank you.

You scare me though. Dolly and I honeymoon on an island just north of Boothbay, ME. To get there we had to go by John’s Bay and Poor House Cove. Now 19 years later we have John up on the rocks at John’s Ledges. Help.

I was just asked a very timely question that I thought all would find useful.

“What is the prediction for the mosquito population this weekend. Because of all our rain, they are getting really bad in Illinois & I assume it will be the same in Ohio. The heat is also returning here this weekend. I guess what I'm asking is, are wearing shorts and short sleeve shirts asking for trouble while in the park? “

Not if you don't mind if we call you "BAIT". We have had corn two weeks early this year. The 1/3rd acre pond by the house is FULL. Bring a bathing suit if you like. The water falls are the best I have ever seen. We have more wild raspberries than my wife has seen in the 55 years she has lived here. The mosquitoes are abundant. The black flies are irritating. If you hike between the two water falls and back (two miles) you have to ford the stream six times. Normally you can cross on the rocks. It was ankle deep over the rocks last time I went there. I wear low cut boots.

I hike every other day, eight to twelve miles a week with the girls. I use Deep Woods OFF! Towelettes. The girls run fast. I would buy a box of them at the grocery or drug store and share. It is not bad if you keep moving, but setting up a LF takes time. They love time.

Thanks all. Trying to inspire people to come see the park!

We'll miss you as well, Bethe!

John,
I've got a family picnic Sunday that no one bothered to tell me about until yesterday. I'm working until 6 or 7 Friday night and off Saturday. It looks like rain Friday overnight so I'm planning on heading over very early Saturday morning and spending the day. Since I've got the 1.5ish hour drive I don't want to commit to a certain time in the morning.

If someone can post the plan for Saturday morning (sounds like the ledges?) here Friday night I'll just go straight there. Looking forward to it.

Looks like I have a schedule similar to Shawn's except that I may make it back over Sunday morning, but not really early, maybe 8-9am(ish). Saturday morning may be about the same, or maybe a few minutes earlier.

I may have to destroy a tile tub surround and take it down to the studs Sunday, but that depends on other progress this week, and I can probably accomplish that after returning from John's.

It might be prudent to note here that I'm not taking on volunteers to destroy the walls of my house.

Bethe, sorry to miss you. Any time you can get away you and Nate are both welcome to visit.

Shawn, see ya when you get here.

Lee L, did I mention that I had demolition training at Fort Leonard Wood?

Daniel L or dlin will be returning

Cody G or CGross will be coming for the first time.

I met both at the two Bill Schwab gatherings I attended earlier. More good people. Daniel as you know is a great photographer. Cody was just learning when I met him. I am looking forward to great results.

Please bring prints to share.

This may be in the “more than I wanted to know” category.

It is 7:42 AM Thursday and a strange beeping sound started out by the driveway just before both dogs exploded in barking. It must be going to be a weekend of large parties because a truck full of Porta Potties was making its first delivery. Usually they wait until Friday.

Let the games begin.
