Important corn information. Dolly stopped at Zalay's tonight (near the covered bridge) to pick up some fresh vegetables. They expect to have their first corn later this week. What you may remember from last year that in addition to selling a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, they also have a stand in the back where you can buy freshly squeezed lemonade and freshly roasted corn. They have a bucket of melted butter and you can get all the cholesterol you can stand. I mean fresh corn, roasted before your eyes. Most people eat until their eyes pop out. Just something to think about when you are not at the Country Maid for an ice cream. Did someone hear Jeff groan? Still going to that wedding Jeff?

I'm drooling right now! Maybe we could get Country Maid to make a roasted corn ice cream? They do that down in Mexico and it is pretty good stuff.

I think you and Eva will need to come on over and show them how.

Lee PMed some birding questions for his wife. Perhaps the information will be of interest to others. Lee L, someone more knowledgeable in this than I, please correct me on any of this if needed.

There was a large hockey-basket ball coliseum on the north side of the intersection of Rt. 271 and Rt. 303. It was demolished some years ago, maybe twenty, and a grass land was planted in its place. About a mile west of that is the Country Maid Ice cream store that we talk so much about. About a mile north of the coliseum are the two waterfalls you visited last time. The whole area is 4-5 miles from our house.

Further on the subject of birds, there is a great Blue Heron rookery on Bath Rd. between Riverview Rd. and Akron - Peninsula Rd.. where Bath Rd. crosses the Cuyahoga River. Bath Rd. is two parallel roads south of our road Everett. One Heron visits our pond every day we don't have people running around the yard. There is a second great Blue Heron rookery and an eagle's nest on the Towpath north of the Brecksville RR Station.

I didn't know about this, but my wife had heard about the project. Here's a web page:
http://www.wcasohio.org/richfield_grasslands.htm
The maps there are from Microsoft and not interactive. I'll check on it later and see about putting it in the NEOH APUG google page with better maps. From the web page it sounds like they ripped out all the old parking and now you have to park along the side of the road.

At least looking from the road, every trace of concrete is gone. I have not walked the land though.

I have some pictures of it just before it was destroyed, probably around 1998. Now there is not much left. In fact I went looking for it a few years ago and had some trouble finding the same spot.

Wow. I lost track of our event dates with the Fourth of July activity. NE OH Gathering, July 16-18, 2010. That is just a week and a half away. Who all is thinking of coming? When should we expect you? Three maybe four people from the Midwest LF asylum are talking about coming. Lee & Sue from Dayton are coming. Talk to me! Who else will be here and when? Are there any changes in the evolving plan that people would like to see? Will there be enough that chipping in for the $111.00 Porta Potty is reasonable. Bring prints to show and tell.

Sue and I are on target to be there. Going to bring Hassy for a walk along with some 8X__ for bird watching.

Is the exhibit at the Akron museum shoing the urban jungle of Detroit still showing?

Lee,

Yes.

Here is the announcement from the museum and a link to a video the artist and the curator made.

Detroit Disassembled:
Photographs by Andrew Moore
June 5, 2010 - October 10, 2010
Arnstein, Bidwell and Isroff Galleries

Andrew Moore’s photographs of the Motor City are sublime—beautiful, operatic in scale and drama, tragic yet offering a glimmer of hope. They are the subject of Detroit Disassembled, an exhibition organized by the Akron Art Museum making its debut here before touring nationally. Detroit, once the epitome of our nation’s industrial wealth and might, has been in decline for almost a half-century. The city is now one-third empty land—more abandoned property than any American city except post-Katrina New Orleans.

Moore’s images, printed on the scale of epic history paintings, belong to an artistic tradition that began in the 17th century. Numerous artists have used ruins to remind their viewers of the fall of past great civilizations and to warn that contemporary empires risk the same fate. Moore’s soaring scenes of rusting factory halls and crumbling theaters share the monumentality of Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s 18th century engravings of the fallen civic monuments of ancient Rome and Greece. His photographs of skeletal houses and collapsed churches carry forward the Romantic tone and rich hues of Caspar David Friedrich’s 19th century paintings of fallen medieval cathedrals and castles. Although hard to believe that Moore's post-apocalyptic scenes reflect present-day America, he has been scrupulously honest, creating photographs that are both documentary and metaphorical in nature.

Andrew Moore is a friend of ours - in fact the assistant in that video is my good friend Dan, who played tour guide for most of the places shown in the book. I would highly recommend the show to anyone interested.

Any chance one of you would be able to record that video off of PBS? We aren't getting it shown up here in Detroit.

I see that it is playing today at 2pm - wow, that's not much notice ...

I've got it on my DVR and if I can figure out how to put it on a VHS tape, I'd be happy to do so.

I plan on attending. I can come on Friday after work, as well as on Saturday and Sunday.

Sounds like some folks are interested in the "Detroit Disassembled" exhibition - I am too, so if that is part of the weekend, great!

Also, earlier in the thread, some mentioned interest in looking for our local "disassembled" places, so maybe there is a theme developing for this weekend.

Regardless, I am up for anything, and look forward to the weekend.

Jeff

I just made a VCR tape of it. Thanks Jeff B. for pointing out the play time. The tape will be available to look at if anyone is trying to decide whether to go to the show or not.

Looking at the tape I realized he uses the Linhof Technikarden 45 model I am trying to sell. I never got pictures like that out of mine. Ask him if he wants a backup camera?

Reading through the thread again, happily there seem to be a wide range of interests. Let me toss out a tentative schedule and see what your thoughts are. Please feel free to offer variations, juggle times, places and specifics.

In the past we have done one Mexican and one Indian dinner. Have you liked these places? Should we continue? In May several of us went to the two waterfalls near the Richfield motels. Because there were different arrival times and hikes we skipped the 10:00 AM coffee and rolls at our house and met after the waterfalls at the Richfield Family Restaurant for brunch, show and tell and tell and tell. It seemed to be very popular with six of us.

Tentative Schedule:

Friday: Meet and Greet at our house at 5:00 PM.
Show and Tell if there are enough people or late afternoon shooting around the pond and woods. We could do Mexican or go to the Musketeers a mile away for pizza and burgers. Think about which you would like to do.

Saturday: There has been a mix of interest in rough terrain. The two waterfalls Blue Hen and Buttermilk are about a mile from the Richfield Family Restaurant. Ritchie or Kendall Ledges are about seven miles away. The Coliseum Grasslands is half way between. All three places can be visited at day break or later. Brunch can be when people show up at the Richfield Family Restaurant.

In the afternoon people can swap places or we can do show and tell. Talk to me about dinner interests.

Sunday: Early risers go where they want. Meet for rolls and coffee 10:00 AM our house. The Akron Art Museum opens at 11:00 AM and is about a half hour drive from us. Those who want to see the show can go. Those who would prefer to shoot can. If anyone is interested in any of the other places described earlier in the thread I can take you or direct you there and see the show another time.

What are your thoughts? Who else is coming that hasn't already spoken?

If you have not been here before and would like to join us, send me a PM with contact information and an emergency contact. I will return with directions. If you shoot film and enjoy like minded people and have read this far, you are more than welcome. Bring prints to show and tell.

We now have three; Jim T, Rick T and Mike S coming from the Midwest Large Format Asylum and a fourth Sherman possibly coming. Welcome all. Rick mentions that he has just self published a book that I am looking forward to seeing. I met them at their print review in February. Nice people and good photographers - film of course. I think we will all enjoy. Jim T has a 25 image show going on right now in the Grand Rapids area.

Thanks for coming.

John,
I'll be there, waiting to see when a co-worker gets back from vacation before I know for sure which days. If all goes well could be there Friday night... fingers crossed.

Jeff, you break up that darn wedding yet?
