Quick question: How "nude" is "too nude"? Is the image I've just posted in the "Critique" gallery acceptable?

Do we need to write an artist's statement? I thought I remembered seeing this somewhere.

I was wondering the same thing...

BTW Anyone driving to Belmont Hill from CT or western MA or the Springfield area for just the day? I am looking to share the drive/expense...

Cheers, Krystyna

How are people pricing their work for this? I do not normally try to sell work, so I am not sure what to do here. I would prefer not to value them too far outside of what others are doing. Both of mine are B&W 8x10's, so it's not as if I spent an enormous amount of time sweating over a gum bichromate print.

I think all should do that in case....and have it available on saturday. As far as Pete's question on pricing, I don't have to worry about that as my prints will hold no interest in the viewer to purchase..as they are two old 8x10 images of a house down in Prov. (I've got to find a good printing service!) Also, i hope this group will allow high quality digital prints from negs or tranys some time in the future. From the printing service nearby to me, his prints can't hold a candle to my digital prints! Not even close. (sorry, I need some more cheese with my whine)

Sorry. Out of touch lately so things are piling up in this thread.

Ed: The guiding light on nudity will be the Mom and Dad factor -- will a boy be afraid to have his mom and dad see him looking at the picture? I think your last post (Figure #32) is quite subtle as well as beautiful. I don't think any boy would be embarrassed to look at it with his mom standing right there. Question answered?

justK and winger: No artist's statement necessary, all statements accepted and hung if presented.

Pete: Price is a funny thing. A $400 item will seem like an impulse buy to some people, ridiculously overpriced to others. I think you ought to put a price on your work that will make you happy if someone buys it - and then not worry about it. You are probably not going to be able to retire on the proceeds from this show, no matter what.

I'll get back to town tomorrow (Friday.) I'll be checking this thread more then but I can also be reached by phone. PM and I'll send a number.

See you all then!

OK ... I'm going to try to make it with two (2) pieces - Silver Gelatin in 22" x 26" fames. Saturday will be murderously busy, but I hope to be there ~ 9:30AM.

Hi- I searched this thread and elsewhere a couple of times with no luck... Does anyone know if I can drop off my work today? I emailed Whitey last night but no response so far. I have to leave town tomorrow very early morning, so there's not much time... If the school/gallery is not accessible today, is there someone willing to help me in this? Thanks!

Drop off is tomorrow Sat Aug 26. I don't think Whitey is at the school today... me thinks he is on the road headed home.

So I managed to drop off two pieces at the gallery today... Thanks Whitey!

As I said before I am afraid to miss the reception as I will be out of town. He said there will be another time for the exhibiting photographers to get together, so I'll make that high priority. For now, I'll describe my work here for those who care.

The first piece is something I already mentioned. It's a diptych of b&w transparencies in 11x14 size. They are typical chlorobromide lith films developed in a print developer and then toned in selenium. The tonal scale is much wider with transparency and I needed it for this work. I like this a lot but I have been very discouraged to continue to make this type of work because gallery people hate the cumbersome hanging requests. The top one was taken in Boston South End, and the bottom one was in Ipswitch, MA.

The second piece (print) is a very recent piece. That title relates to the subject matters, not my request for the viewer. It was a quick unplanned shot in Boston Common, made with a rangefinder camera. The main subject of this picture is a woman showing a picture on a fairly recent digital camera and this is what the title refers to. This picture has certain visual effects, for example, the image can be segmented into high-key areas and low-key areas, but what I like about it is the repetition and (dis)similarity of the main and secondary subjects. The print was toned in a combination of polysulfide and selenium.

Unfortunately, I neglected to submit an "Artists Statement".

Here it is:

"I was born in Beverly, Massachusetts on a Friday afternoon in July,
and, fascinated by the incredible beauty of this world from that moment on,
I am obsessed with discovering and "connecting" with kindred souls by sharing the perceptions of the wonderful gifts of the Great Creator."

Show Opening - Photos

The NE APUG Photo Exhibit opened today at Whitey's Belmont Hill School and was truly impressive. Whitey and Gene did an outstanding job of hanging and lighting the exhibit. Good photography, good company, and good food... what else can one ask for?

Although I had a hard time staying awake in the afternoon, I did manage to grab a few photos and here they are.

Thank you to everyone. I was worth the trip up from NJ.

Well... it was a very good weekend. The workshops went well. I am glad everyone liked Ed's photograms and he was pleased with your enthusiam and interest.
Art - thanks for the Polaroid transfer demos. Bruce - thanks for the paper exercize. Man, I'll never live down that "Who's that guy talking to Fred Picker?"
Suzanne - thanks for organizing the weekend. And Whitey, a great big thanks for hosting the event.
And John, it was great finally meeting you and your wonderful family.

Despite the pouring rain, we had a great afternoon yesterday. My kids were really pleased to see other kids there, and it was excellent to meet John and his family. Thanks to Whitey for hosting, lighting, and, well, for generally great company. Thanks to Gene for hanging the show, and also, great company. And thanks to all who came to the workshop and the opening party!

The work on the walls looked great to me!! Hope we can inspire some of the kids at Whitey's school to embrace traditional photography, and run with it!

Thanks for a great weekend everyone!

OK! So now that I have a minute to break away from the start of school let me do two things, invite all who can make it to visit the NE APUG show at Belmont Hill and, far more important at this point, express my greatest gratitude to those who came together last weekend to make for a really great time.

Art Liem, Ed Los, Bruce Barlow and Richard Ritter - you guys made me wonder again at the incredible wealth on knowledge that this group represents. But more than that, you made me thankful and hopeful at the generosity and joy you showed in sharing that wealth. You folks are the people I really hope my students become. I'm building the cache of photogram materials up, buying Polaroid film and looking far more carefully at prints, attempting to discern the fine points of difference in quality that Bruce seems to see immediately. If anyone has an opportunity to get next to these folks for a workshop, drop what you're doing and jump on it.

Suzanne, keep throwing out workshop ideas and pushing to make them happen. Belmont Hill is happy to host again.

Gene... sorry, just keep working here while I go do something else. I'll be right back.

Art and Jim Grimes - I had a great time wandering in Harvard Square. I hope those images you guys captured contain something that will make you happy when you see the film.

Everyone who came- THANKS!! More later. I'll start a new thread about a party for take down. Maybe some other folks will join us.

Hey Whitey,
The pleasure was all mine. For my first time in the Boston area - would you believe? - you were an outstanding guide and you and Art were great company.

***For everyone who was not there, Whitey wanted to make sure that Art and I did not have to go back to our motel rooms and sit around and do nothing. He took us to Harvard Square where we had an opportunity to do some street photography. It was definitely a study in "alternative" culture for a few hours.

Anyhow, it was a great weekend of photography and learning. Thank you!!

I was thinking...anyone interested in a workshop on business promotion? Hey Suzanne, any chance of including that in our next get together? One of us "up here" must have a good (and current) understanding of whats required.

Hei, Whitey,

I tried to visit the "Show" today, Saturday, the 16th ... Who, me? Check first?
Interesting, if fruitless, trip down Rte. 128.

I plan to try again - I really want to see the completed Show. Monday (or Tuesday, Thursday, Friday?) afternoon OK?
