I don't even think there is a printer, let alone a quility printer, within 30 miles of my house. I just print my own. The local minlab just started doing real black and white film developing, but they still print on color paper with the Agfa minilab machine.

Not sure what you plan to enlarge, Drew, but if it's b/w, then you might try Gene's friend who owns Dark Horse Photographics in Florence, MA. It's exclusively b/w processing and printing, and they offer fiber based prints!

If it's color, Dorian Color Lab in Arlington is pretty good.

For B&W developing and printing, contact Christine Pratt of Dark Horse Photographics at 413-585-8870.

I've used Jim, another APUGer - aj-images. He's in NJ, but I figure if you have to send your negs anyway....

Give him a try.

Regards, Art.

OK folks... this is for those of you that plan to drop off your work for this exhibit at the Valley Photo Center here in Springfield:
I am planning on Sat Aug 19th from 10:00am to 4:00pm for a drop off date for the show. This will give you time to choose and print your perfect neg for the show.
Also, as of July 17th I will be taking over the daily operations of the VPC, working part-time mornings at my current job and afternoons at the VPC. The phone # at the VPC is 413-781-1553. Please let me know of your plans for drop off.

OK, guys, I have a 16x20 that some of you have seen (at the very first meeting of NE APUGers at Whitey's school) of the Fruitlands Farmhouse, B&W, winter scene. Printed by my 13 yr old godson, who had access to a 4x5 enlarger at his school. Think it's worth including in the show? (This is addressed to Whitey, Gene and Suzanne.)

Also, last weekend I was angered and depressed to find my left knee badly swollen and myself walking with difficulty. I celebrated this by shooting 30 sheets of the expired NPS 160 film that Bob Fowler was throwing out at the end of the workshop in March. It's at Dorian Labs right now, and I hope to see the results next week. So I may have a color work as well. Unfortunately the subject matter will probably be the same damn house.

I really need to travel somewhere to photograph - damn my commute. I've been thinking about visiting Hildene, Robert Lincoln's house in Vermont....

That shot you showed us at the first get-together would grace the show, Bill. I'd love to hang your work. You may be bored with
the same damn house
but many people have not seen it.

As for getting out more... yah. Do that. If you're looking for historic house shots, try The Manse in Concord at the North Bridge. The river there lends a lot of options and it's not far from where you live. Maybe we can meet there? Anybody else? Concord is touristy, but can be fun. The whole battle road system is available there and offers old buildings and stone walls, small ponds and trails that are easily accessible. I've never had anyone hassle me about a big camera either.

I'd be interested. (Except can't do it on July 22, taking people to Fruitlands that day.)

I've photographed at the North Bridge before, and had a park ranger slightly hassle me about "interfering with foot traffic" with my tripod. At the time she and I were the only people in sight, but I saw what she meant 30 minutes later when a crowd showed up. Tho' I've visited the Old Manse several times, have never photographed there - don't know what they allow. The last time I walked by the Old Manse I was started to see deer eating fruit from one of the trees....

It probably was mentioned somewhere, but I can't find the date that Whitey wants prints dropped off at the school. I'll probably drop off there instead of at the VPC. So when is a good date to drop off at the school?

You probably have this info...but I guess the day before, at that workshop, is when it can be dropped off.

Also, I called the processing service nearby me to see how my prints were doing....and he said, "oh... did you want me to print something for you?????" This is two weeks after giving him the negs! I'm glad I have a lot of hair on my head! Losing some won't hurt.

Of shows and things

OK! I've been out of touch lately and I'm sure folks are wondering about the details of the set up for this show.
  • Drop Off: I think anyone coming to the workshops on the 26th should simply bring their work with them that morning. I can be there early but I think we should expect al work to be there by 10. This OK? If this is a problem for anyone, please PM me and we'll work something out. We do need to know what you are bringing however, so sign in Dead Link Removed to let us know you're participating if you haven't already done so.
  • Artist's statements: Not necessary, but welcome if you got one. Price and title are required. NFS is perfectly fine but if you want it to be for sale, tell me what you want for it.
  • Food: There are indeed many wonderful restaurants in Waltham and Watertown. I'll make sure we have coffee. We'll figure it out from there.
  • Overnight: Art has signed in as an overnight guy. Any others? We might get a shoot together if there is interest, good weather and energy. There are plenty of choices for accomodations. The Cambridge Gateway Inn on Rt 2, ugly but cheap and servicable, is just down the road by Alewife station. Convenient to the city and about a mile or so from the school. We are only 4 miles from Rt 95 (128) though, so there are lots of choices.

As i said at the top, I've been out of touch a lot lately. Unavoidable, but I'm sure it set some folks to wondering if this thing really was going to happen. We had a lightning strike on the building, but the gallery and the darkrooms were not touched. I went to look at it and the folks there said that God was trying to get me but she missed. Nice.

More later.

Thanks! That is what I'll do. I'm fairly positive I signed up through your link before, so I hope I did and it wasn't my imagination (life has been a bit chaotic lately).

Whitey,
Does it make sense to publish the list of participants, so people can make sure that their registrations were successful?

When I get back from vacation I'll e-mail Fred Rosenberg to have him sign up for the show at the on-line place.

Just a reminder that I will be at the VPC on Sat Aug 19th from 10:00am to 4:00pm for any one who wants to drop off any photos for this show. I will be working feverishly to try and finish the lighting set-up I am revamping and will have others there to help paint the walls.

A *bump* and a reminder that the NE-APUG SHOW is coming up fast!

Workshops on Saturday the 26th

Opening reception for the show -- Sunday, August 27th, 2 to 4+

Room left for folks to join the show and room in the workshops! There are currently about 15 folks showing. Want in? Go Dead Link Removed or PM me. The more the merrier! If folks are coming from afar and staying over on Saturday, there is always the possibility of a shooting session in the Boston area on Saturday evening and/or Sunday morning. Harvard Square on a summer evening? The school is located just off Rt 2 (exit 58) about a mile west of the Alewife T station. Mapquest shows us here

If you don't want to join in and show your work at this time, just come join us for a party on Sunday!

At the risk of repeating myself, I'm going to repost the directions to Belmont Hill here along with a phone number that folks can use to contact me with any questions.

I'll be there at about 8 on Saturday for the workshops. I'll be in early on Sunday too to make sure all is well and the lighting is finished. To get here, just head toward Belmont from exit 58 from Rt 2. Bear right at the small rotary about 500 yards in from the highway and take the entrance to the parking lot immediately in front of you. The big building right there at the top of the parking lot, the one that has an "Admissions" sign on the front door is the art center. The door you want is on the left side by the flags (just before the flagpoles, Suzanne).

Many buses from Alewife station stop at Park St., at the top of the hill. The school is about 500 yards from the bus stop. Any issue? Call me and we can arrange a pick up at the station and a ride back if necessary.

Here's the Mapquest page for directions.

617-484-4410x282 for a contact about any details that need checking. I may be out but will return your call ASAP.
