Having won the Jan/Feb 2018 MSA, I am tasked with selecting the next period's theme. So many of the possibilities that were running through my mind were previously used, but this is a similar idea to one of the ideas I had. I like taking that which has been discarded and turning it into something new. We have such a disposable mentality at times. So why not new life breathed into an abandoned idea. A new use for a discarded tool. So my choice for the MSA theme is "One's Trash is Another's Treasure". Interpret any way it fits your vision and fancy. Film away. Film away.

A reminder that we continue to operate this "Assignment" with "analogue" constraints. If you are going to be doing any manipulations, they need to be "APUG" type manipulations - done with either light, camera, darkroom tools or physical manipulations - no digital manipulation.

As always, here is the link to the MSA guidelines: https://www.photrio.com/forum/threa...gnment-msa-guidelines-revised-2015-07.126124/

Thanks and have fun!

Thanks Ron - seems like an excellent choice for a theme.
A reminder too: submissions should be new work, so they need to have been taken on or after March 1, 2018.
Now, just to be mischievous, here is a submission that is ineligible for this MSA because I shot and submitted it for an MSA in 2010 - "Objects Discarded":

Good luck everyone, and have fun.

Thanks for the "new work" reminder. I clipped that out of your post by mistake. Good looking out. Like the photo. Very nice blacks and great contrast overall.

Great theme! Hopefully I’ll find a few photos that fit the theme while on my travels over the next couple of weeks.

Oh.. is it spring planting time?
Oh ... .ah ha... your not referring to the Black Gold Peat Moss ...
So looking forward to seeing the treasure from these finds... when ya post it, and how it comes out.
This may be a verrry interesting Shooting Assignment... with very creative twists!

You've got a good eye. I'll start using the peat and the vermiculite (in bag on the left) next weekend for the earliest starts... but no, not for MSA!

Goodness. We won’t be starting anything here. It was -9C yesterday!

Never gets that cold here, but we had a night last week where it got down to -3C which is about as cold as it ever gets. The "plant wizard" Luther Burbank called Sonoma County "the chosen spot of all the earth as far as nature is concerned". And we do have mild winters. But even with the mild climate, our growing season for warm-season plants is short compared to many other places. We usually have cool nights in the summer ( 5-10C ), and it can be difficult to ripen something like a watermelon or long-season corn. I'll be starting eggplant ( aubergine! ) and pepper seeds next weekend so that they will be ready to plant out at the end of May!

I actually have peppers, chilis and aubergines in my heated propagator right now. I will transfer to me greenhouse once it is safe to move the less tender stuff out of the greenhouse. Corn is wheat in British English. Do you mean sweetcorn (maize)? We’d usually plant that in-situ.

Yes sweet corn, I knew that! We direct sow that too. I wouldn't be surprised if you can plant your aubergines and chilis before I can plant mine. The soil doesn't get warm enough here until late May or early June, and if you plant before that they just sit there... and might get hit by a late frost. I start my seeds indoors in an East-facing window, with lights on 16 hrs/day. I'll start tomatoes a couple weeks later.

Yes. It will warm up fast here (never of course particularly warm). I usually anticipate frosts will stop by mid-March but they can come unpredictability into May but are usually very short snaps (hours). It is a local thing and might be different 10 miles away. I’ve completely given up on tomatoes outdoors. They did so well for decades but I can’t save them from blight. I’ve tried every so-called resistant variety imaginable but the climate is just too wet.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's entries. Ned, your photo above says "Sonoma County" minus the wine!

There is a third, but the neg turned out a little too thin for VDB, might try something else.
Any how my entry, should be self explanatory. Made by 8x10 camera, contact print using camera negative and vandyke brown emulsion, a little sunshine and a touch of selenium.

Found a discarded Linhof Technica in a waste container. It works perfect! Image (fisherman) is not new so I take some fresh negs with it next weeks.

Nice shots, @awty. And a discarded Linhof...now that is an interesting take on the theme, @Bertus, but lucky for you, too! Looking forward to seeing the "new" work.
