"Any place designed for people to gather"

I was thinking about this theme when today, while scanning some film, I found my contribution.

It's the main plaza before the famous castle of Disneyland (in Paris, France), where all the people gather at the end of the day for the big show and fireworks.
It was made with my Olympus Mju II (Stylus Epic in USA) loaded with expired Fujichrome Sensia (RA-675). A little handy camera I always carry with me when I can't bring a large camera.

Disneyland-Paris-Mju-II-1-complete.jpg (scanned with Silverfast 8, no PS tinkering except dust removal from scanning)

I chose this image not for the place itself, but for it being "designed for people to gather" - as is the theme of this MSA.
If anything is designed, then it is Disneyland until the last detail. It's all make believe of a pleasant nature.

Everything seemed to fit this MSA: even the clouds in this image. I was stunned when I saw the slides. It almost looks like
these clouds are painted for a movie background. But believe me, these are real clouds.

Disneyland-Paris-Mju-II-1-cropped.jpg (cropped to square format)

Or are they? You'll never know with Disney Magic ... :whistling:

Putting in another one!

This one is taken in a park during the political week "Almedalen" in Sweden.
Think it was kind of a weird place to do yoga, since all around there is lots of on set tv studios and different booths with speakers and panel discussions etc.
Maybe they just couldn't stand all the politics and decided to shut it out their minds.

Oh! So in yours you used the correct filter? Is that the standard fluorescent lighting filter? I have one, have never used it as I don't photograph inside much. And if I do it's not people, so it's not as much a concern, It's one of the few filters I actually had with me on the trip. My circular polarizer that had been my fathers that came with my AE-1 (which I've recently found the original receipt and warrantee card to from the late 70's I believe) literally fell apart when I got to Dwayne's photo in 2010 on the 30th of December, I don't know how, I went to turn it and the whole thing just went to pieces! It was ... Appropriate and I took it as a good sign of the end of an era...

Anyway thanks for clarifying, I like the blue tone, but always thought that was Kodachrome shift in long exposures...

Actually, mine was on Portra 400 IIRC. Either that or Fuji NPH 400 or the equivalent. The beauty of color neg film - it's easy to correct. No filter used.

When in time of need (or in need of time) just develop as B&W film and be mighty surprised with the results (or disappointed if it didn't work out)

http://www.ehow.com/how_6599140_develop-film-black-white-developer.html

I've done that but no thank you not on color images I shot on 8x10 while in another country... I think I'll stick to color... I had HP5+ for the B&W stuff, this was one of those "I kept it in mind but what's more important are MY images for me, not the MSA" situation... Plus for CN films you really need to over expose the film by 1-2 stops to really X-Process it properly with good results, which I didn't do because it's supposed to be color. But thanks.

Why aren't you running your own C41 yet? It's not rocket science.

Have you tried running 8x10 C-41 in a JOBO 3005 by HAND??? I don't think so... No thanks... I don't own a CPP2 or CPP3 or ATL...

I can do it, I've done it with smaller films... But .. No... At the cost of color 8x10 I'll let the professionals handle that...

I've run 8x10 FP4+ in Pyrocat-HD in a 3005 drum by hand. No real difference. By hand is a pain in the ass no matter how you slice it. Get one of the Tetenal Press kits and run your own. Or just submit what you have when you have it, and don't make a big to-do over what might be...

The color of the sunlight entering this church was so beautiful that I used my Rollei 35 S loaded with slide film - even if it was only 100 ASA, so that I had to use about 1/8 sec, if I remember correctly, pressing the camera to a pillar.

Location: St. Marien, Lübeck, Germany
Equipment Used: Rollei 35 S
Exposure: about 1/8 sec at f2.8

I'm not making a big to-do over it... You are...

Doing B&W by hand in a tank is a lot different than color... 13 minutes at 68 degrees vs 3 minutes at 75 degrees (or whatever temp C-41 is...) in the kitchen sink makes a huge difference in consistency, safety, risk of chemical spill and contamination into foodstuffs, etc...

Why don't you just mind your own processing and let me do mine the way I choose please.

No hard feelings but you're arguing with me about how I CHOOSE to handle my own system is irritating honestly, I'm in a mood today and don't need to be told how to run my own stuff, I don't want to do my expensive color sheets in B&W developer and I don't want to do my own color by hand in a risky manner until I have a machine to do it constantly and uniformly, if I want to send it out to a lab, that's my business to choose to do so and no one else's, end of story...

Stone- that's fine. The "big to-do" I was referring to was it seems like every MSA you're posting in the thread about how you have something in the works that would be great for the assignment, but you don't know if it will get done on time or not. There's no need to say it - to quote Yoda: "do or do not, there is no try". You're very fond of pronouncing excuses for why something may or may not happen - nobody wants to hear your excuses. They certainly aren't going to cut it in school. If you have something to submit, submit! If not, no need to announce it. There is no real prize for getting picked for the MSA topic, no professional accolade - it's just fun. If you have something, great, if not, that's fine too. But just chill out!

Go away camping for awhile and the kids get to squabbling. Take it outside boys, this IS supposed to be just for fun.

I missed some great entires. Toadman's shot of Disneyland, with Disney-perfect clouds, and Heinz's lovely shot of Marienkirche brings yet more lovely colour to our already colourful MSA.
Wiliam (polyglot)'s fisheye shot of a tiny eatery packs in a lot. If there has been fisheye bashing going on, I'm glad I missed it. This shot proves it is a great tool, when it's used wisely.
Siompa, glad to see another entry by you. I like your description of how these folks bring their own serenity to a busy, noisy public place.
I agree with Heinz that AJmiller's golf course - two people in all that open flat space brings a sense of humour to "public spaces".
Flying Camera replaces his subway shot with one taken in Toronto. A much more utilitarian station, but the shot captures the frenetic feeling of subways.
Just for clarification - entries to the MSA are to be taken during the 2 month period of each assignment. Giving folks time to process and print/scan is why it stopped being monthly, and became bimonthly. Photos that fit the theme, but were taken previously can be posted as examples and for inspiration, but are not eligible to "win". It's an honour system, of course.

There are 19 more days, and I anticipate some more interesting entries. I've shot some myself, but have been busy with visiting family (excuses, excuses!) I'm enjoying the variety I'm seeing.

A little info to help with the above. (There are in-line links in the text below)

A statue (erected 1949) of George Bannerman Dealey speaking to a group of onlookers. Some more information. Made world famous for another reason.

Dealey's platform inscription
Citizens of all stations and creeds, comprising the G. B. Dealey Memorial Association of Dallas, erect this monument to commemorate the service and preserve the example of great, good, and useful life, consecrated in faith, dedicated in purpose, to the glory of God and the betterment of mankind...Truth was its light, wisdom its guide, history its counselor, journalism its fruitful province, sympathy broad as human need was its inspiration, philanthropy, - founded in all-embracing brotherly love, - its highest aim.
Anno Domini MCMXLIX

He is speaking in front of the Old Red Courthouse.

In the background one may notice a skyscraper.

Some other images that I would like to share.

Perhaps one more to come depending on development.

BTW:
I happened to see today that there were some images uploaded to the MSA gallery, that weren't mentioned here.
See: (there was a url link here which no longer exists) (I often forget to look there).
I especially like this image from Bertus: (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

And I noticed that some images in this thread aren't uploaded to the MSA gallery. Please do if you can. I think you have to be a "(there was a url link here which no longer exists)" to be able to do that, but (there was a url link here which no longer exists) you also help to keep this forum alive ;-)

Taken within the same day, about three weeks ago, at the Baltic Sea as the image of the church in Lübeck. It is a public lookout point close to Lübeck.

Well, after a week of developing film and an evening of scanning I also have a few submissions for this assignment. I've put three in the gallery (and labelled properly for the MSA) but I'll add a couple more here. I spent two weeks in Tohoku photographing festivals, about two thirds in black and white, and one third in colour (I'll get the slides tomorrow). I hope to get into the darkroom this week to get some work prints done at least.

While festivals are kind of an obvious choice for public spaces, I also took a few non-festival shots, specifically for this assignment. The "Loft" picture is barely acceptable -- it was taken handheld, and is a little soft, but I kind of like it regardless.
Loft-at-Night-Sendai-b.jpg

The street crossing with hundreds (if not thousands) of people is something of a regular fixture at festival time. This was taken in Sendai for Tanabata.

I agree, but often my images are PLANED for a bigger view than the gallery provides, so I hope Sly uses the thread as the viewer.

I.G.I.

After some hesitation what to post (I shot mostly "public spaces") here is my take: Brussels Metro, the way I experience it - chaotic and alienating. As for the gear, Ectar/ Pentax/ Konica Minolta.
