Minox Carry Options

Hello sub-miniature friends -

I love my Minox B, it's so small I take it everywhere. But I am always worried about it falling out of my pocket, it's sleek and smooth and well...it might slip out.

I'd love to be able to carry it in a pouch on my belt. I know there are Minox cases, but I don't think they have belt loops.

Fellow Minox lovers - how do you carry yours?

I've seen them carried in nylon belt sheathes made for knives. Some of those even have a hook-and-loop top flap that both covers the top of the contents (reducing temptation for pickpockets?) and protects the camera.

You'd probably want/need to shop in person, at least the first time, to be sure the camera will actually fit in the sheath and come out without undue effort.

I use a nylon belt pouch once intended for a small knive or flash-light. Check what is on offer at outdoor-leisure suppliers.

There are lots of inexpensive cases made for cell phones that have a belt loop or clip and velcro closure. I mean the smaller cases made for flip phones.

Why not take the original chain and fasten it to one of the loops for the belt of your trousers? It is long enough to put the camera before your eyes and short enough that it doesn't fall to the ground. And there is the original leather pouch which protects the camera very well.

I usually just put it in my pocket. But a padded eyeglass case that readers slip in works really well if you want some protection. I do like knife case thing though. Might have to try that.

There's always Luigi if the Minox B and A are similar. I'd go w/ the eyeglass case from a thrift store. You could just take a marker and write "Avanti !" on it in big letters for that low-cost Italian flair. Well, not big letters, it's a Minox case.

I'd probably prefer ones with hook and loop over that big brass snap stud -- the riveted metal on the inside will be prone to mark up the Minox.

I can tell you from experience they are tough little cameras. I had one fall from my shirt pocket when I was on a ladder, it fell a good six feet to a tiled concreate floor. Small dent on the corner but it has worked flawlessly for decades since then.

I found this pouch designed for digital voice recorders; the type made by Olympus. It cost £4 on Amazon. It's a good size, a little too wide but not bad, a good flap and Velcro fastener:

Looks like that might also work with the telescoping Minolt, Kiev, and possible other (Edixa? Rollei?) 16 mm cameras.

I tried my Tessina on a wrist strap and found out that it was too heavy and that it would arbitrarily choose to detach itself and get damaged in the fall. A secure pocket or safety strap is the way to go.

Although I had a couple of these Minox belt cases (for C and B/BL), I have never grew accustomed to them. Nice and so forth, but not for me. However, when trekking or something, I use a leather case from Leatherman knives. Strong, duty heavy leather, buttoned, belt loop that resists anything. It is perfectly suited for a B or BL. The A/IIIs is kind of small for that case, and a C too long for it.

Alternatively, I have a couple of camera chains, modified to be hooked to my Minox cases D-ring and I wore them around my neck. Pretty handy and really useful, especially when you need the camera to be available in an instant.

I'd be concerned such a tiny camera might slip out of something like a knife sheath. Even w/ a retaining strap, those things can come undone while sitting down, biking or moving around a lot. The camera would probably be long gone before you noticed it.

I'd put it on a shoe string, and loop that around my neck or shoulder.

I haven't shot my Minox in ages, but when I did, I just carried it in my pants pocket. It never fell out, but maybe I was just lucky. Maybe it depends on what kind of pants you wear. I can't help you there.

@momus The Leatherman case @Minox mentioned has a snap closure -- I've been carrying a Leatherman in one for more than fifteen years.. Sadly, the leather belt loop will eventually wear out...

It does have a snap button, and it is very sturdy, even after all these years. I have seen guys who keep the camera fastened onto the case with a lanyard or even with its own chain. Never did that, it gets in the way most of the time.

Your Leatherman case must be newer than mine. Mine folded under at the back surface rather than out, and has rivets attaching the belt loop (I'd need to cover the shanks on the inside to avoid scratching a Minox).

Newer? No idea, bought from a shop in Watford Herts in 1996, I believe it was. I was a newbie with the Minox cameras at the time, and I thought it could be just the thing. Felt sorry for the B case the camera came with, you see. Still have both, which shows how durable the Minox case can be.

has rivets attaching the belt loop (I'd need to cover the shanks on the inside to avoid scratching a Minox).

Have one of those, bigger than the one discussed here, has a small metallic thingy on the front of it , saying "Victorinox". The rivets are going thru the leather and can scratch anything is put inside. I just glued two small and thin leather discs onto the inside rivets and it's ok now. Perhaps you can do this too on your case.

Mine still has the Leatherman inside, and the belt loop gave up years ago. If I get a Minox I'll find a lined nylon sheath with a Velcro flap cover.
