Remember when people said 6MP was "equal" to film?

That was amusing, especially when cropping from a 12MP would often result in an unacceptable image.

Again, i'm not talking about 20 or 30 years ago, but i'm talking about years 2020-2021 and buying public = people 18-25 years old.

there was a nice period of time when a lot of film cameras were being dumped for the latest greatest and shiny new toys, which they upgraded every few years. but those of us who still shot film now had an opportunity to buy cameras we lusted over and could not afford or whatever other reason we had for not buying them, swooped in and bought some, sometimes more than needed. that was because of the low price.

I look at it this way. back then film shooter bought the cameras to use. and we still use them. hence the supply shrank. we still have them and most likely, unless the prices get insane, will keep them. so supply really shrank. now the hipsters, or whatever you want to call them, are looking for the new cool toy and a lot of us have what they are looking for. again. most of us wont be selling. i can see the shortage going for a few more years. mainly because lot of these "kids" have a lot of $ to spend and want what they think they want and will spend whatever to get it. now if they decide it was really what they wanted, we will see as a lot of bodies will be relisted every few months as the flavor of the year seems to keep changing.

i feel that we should be looking at film sales, chemical sales and developing lab numbers (not that those are available, but we can judge based on how long it takes to get a roll back, for those who use a lab) to see if this is a passing fad or a new trend in the film business. this is just my opinion and what do I know?

I fell into this trap yesterday --TWICE. I bought TWO lenses -- one $10, one $20 -- in perfect condition, that sold for 15 TIMES as much when they were new. I couldn't refuse -- even though I don't need them. One was from camera shop that should have known better.

A $150 or $300 lens new doesn't rate as an expensive lens. So you got some bargain lenses cheap. Big deal.

right now some individuals are taking pennies on the dollar, and dealers prices are skyrocketing.
I've seen some prices so low i felt bad about making a purchase an didn't.

Where are you seeing the individual sales at bargain prices?

ebay 2-3 months ago, Those days are over.

For archival purposes stick to film. In twenty years people can always look at a 120 transparency, while others are trying to find a computer that can read a gif, jpg, Tif, or any of another handful of digital file formats.

you can always digitize those slides, but not easily the other way around.

There are always some that come on the market again. Wait a little and the check back again at you favorite store or website.

I just bought a Rolleicord II Model 1 - Model K3 for $40 on Ebay that only needed to be cleaned and a $8 replacement mirror.

The deals are there, you just have to look on a regular basis.

That is true, but then back in 2007 I was urging people on APUG to buy all formats of film cameras and lenses but no body listened.
