Hey I have an idea...maybe Gene can get us in there the night before and we'll camp out w/sleeping bags! alright, just kidding (I think) now on to equipment, I'm hoping someone will have a portrait lens for my 4x5 since I don't have such a lens in my arsenal....and this is for anyone who needs to try/use/practice with it. If I do some portrait stuff, i'll just use my rz...but mostly I'll be the go-fah, profide-ah and a model-ah for the group!

Hi,

Looks like the event is shaping up very nicely. I will bring a 4x5 with a 135mm and 240mm lens, with some lights (a couple of heads), sync cords, stands, umbrella and softbox. Looks like the event is shaping up very nicely.

One suggestion: with all the equipment lying around, I recommend that you label your equipment in some manner, especially if you intend to loan some equipment out.

Cheers,

- Phong

OK - I promised directions to the VPC this week, so here goes. I hope I can attach the map and directions.
As always, I reccommend that you look at MapQuest or Yahoo Maps for 1500 Main St., Springfield, MA 01115 since my map is for parking and to indicate one-way streets.
And yes, I did make corrections to the directions!

gene

OOPS - It would not let me attach the map - an Excel sheet, so I scanned it and hope that it is legible.

I presume VPC doesn't, by chance, have a loading dock?

I don't shoot LF yet - but I can act as a grip. I'm pretty good at following instructions (though my wife might disagree with this statement).

Format breakdown??????

Has anyone figured out a breakdown of how many cameras of each format we'll have represented? We really NEED to do a big group shot of everyone with a sea of view cameras on a forest of tripods! Something to send to Perez at Kodak, just to let him know film ain't dead!

<shameless self promotion mode=ON>
I've made a couple of Packard shutter box lensboards for fellow APUG members in the past few weeks. I'm getting ready to hang up my shingle and start up a custom woodworking service making these and other large format items. I'll have 2 box lensboards with me, one with 12" and 14" Artar lenses, one with a 10" Petzval. If anyone is interested in seeing how these shutter boxes work, I'll be happy to spend some time with you. Once my shingle is officially out, I'll become a "proper" APUG advertiser, this is just a sneak peek.
<shameless self promotion mode=OFF>

Speaking of old lenses... I had an email from Carol Miller over the weekend, the Unicum shutter for one of my Rapid Rectilinear lenses is on it's way home from its CLA, so I'll have that lens at the workshop as well.

I won't be there :-(

Folks,

I will be out of town the weekend of the 25th, so won't be able to make it to the workshop. I am quite bummed out about this, as I so looked forward to meeting you all, and especially seeing Bill Hahn again, whom I knew 10+ years ago in another life. In any case, enjoy the show !

For those of you who are coming in from afar... I would suggest making hotel arrangements ASAP!!!! Springfield is hosting the NCAA Div II Elite Eight (basketball) that weekend. There will be a lot of tall people wandering the city.
Looking forward to meeting a whole bunch of new faces.

I'm coming up the morning of. I'll be there around 8am or so. Anyone up for breakfast? Say 8:30. This will give us plenty of time to eat, chat and head back to setup lights and stuff.

Speaking of lights and stuff, should I bring background paper?

Regards, Art.

nice images on your website...especially the culinary and cityscapes. As far as background paper, talk to Suzanne as she is the king (or queen) pin on this workshop.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to back out of this get together. Last minute business trips to TX and NY/CT have me booked most of next week and into the weekend.

Sorry,
Dan

I'm bummed we have a few people dropping out, but I think we will still have a good turnout. We may have to tweak a few groups on Saturday!

As for being Queen o' the Workshop, well, I'll declare that background paper might not be a bad idea to have on hand. Art, if you can get it there without too much trouble great... if not, I'm sure we can manage without it. How's that for a declaration??

Looking forward to Saturday!!

I am bringing Brandon G with me. He is a young photographer, 21 years old, with no LF experience, but a lot of enthusiasm. he can be in Bill Hahn's group with me if that works out.

Kodak Commercial View 8x10 - need manual

I recently purchased a Kodak Commercial View 8x10 and would like to have a copy of the manual. I will be at VPC this weekend. If anyone has a hard copy and can bring it, I can get a copy printed. If anyone knows of an online version, that would be great.

Thanks.

As we get closer to Saturday, I thought it would be good to mention a few things so we can keep the day somewhat organized.

The plan so far... Peter Schrager will be doing an intro to the view camera. This is to make sure we all learn the "lingo" of large format, if you will! It may be repetitive for some, but quite handy for the newbies! I see this as a pretty quick demo... 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour. Then Bob Fowler has graciously agreed to do a lighting demo. We will need a few volunteers here, but this will be, basically, a camera, a light, a model, and polaroids! He will show a few different lighting techniques with a minimal of gear.

Then the afternoon we will break up into our groups. I expect that we will have to swap some of the groups around... as a few people have cancelled, and there may be one or two people who are coming not yet in a group. We'll try to get the groups organized as quickly as we can after the morning demos. I'd like to see professionals/semi professionals mixed up with those of us newbies.

As people arrive... I hope to get there around 9am, myself... we should pick an area for those using a lot of lights, and an area by the windows for those wishing to shoot window light. It's a big space, but I'm sure we will fill it!!

One more note... those bringing lights, you should plan to bring one or two extension cords, and gaffers tape. It's a big room, and I'm not sure how many outlets there are, and it's always a good idea to tape down cords to the floor so no one gets tripped up, and end up in the emergency room! :surprised:

Thanks in advance for everyone's cooperation... looking forward to meeting more APUGgers!

Wish I was going to be there:

1. It's Peter's birthday so be nice.

2. Gaffers tape is the black stuff that tears easily and doesn't leave goo and rip up paint.
