No. The point is not so much to engage in a game with a blatant liar but to make sure the lies don't stand uncontested lest casual readers believe them. You can talk about something without talking to the person who said it.

The majority of what people are told over the course of their lifetime is naively assumed to be true. That is necessary for communication and to even function within a society. That's not a reason to say "shame on them". Whoever says Uelsmann is not a photographer has some different idea of what a photographer is. There's no point asking why Uelsmann's not a photographer - you need to ask what a photographer is if Uelsmann's not one. Some people firmly believe the in-camera composition is sacrosanct, that all effort should be to develop the derived image. You can ask what Uelsmann is, since he's not a photographer. Any answer should reference his obviously advanced darkroom skills - even if one doesn't like the pictures produced.

we pretty much live in a post truth world, and its been that way for a long, long time.
as far as I can tell, people couldn't care less about facts ... even when told truths based on facts written by scholars who have been vetted, information found in respected history books, or from news or magazines that have actual editors that make sure they publish the truth ( and not Info-tainment ), they ignore it and just listen to their friends/peers and false information they read, path of least resistance, it's human nature to do less "work".
I, unfortunately, had to listen to 7+ years of venom and lies spewed to me by a neighbor about various topics I can not speak of here seeing I don't want to be responsible for this thread going in the soapbox, but lets just say this person was as ignorant as the day was long. refused to open their mind to the truth, you know like the mayans didn't invent TV and aliens from outer space didn't invent the internet. everyone knows it was the other way around. the least they could do is consult a UFO-ologist with credentials...

Leica lost it, once they went digital and the funny thing is that they brush the dust off the old Leica icon photos every time they release a new, overpriced and pretty much outdated camera.

The world apparently loves to be fooled.

Buy one of the analog ones in the used market.

I have gone that route and its a waste of time and effort with a tribe of haters.
In the end its easier to brag about gear than know what one is talking about...

It's not about trying to persuade the person making the false claim - it's about undermining the faith other people may have in the false claim. Say your Aunt Bertha comes and starts spouting her unabashed racist nonsense to your kids. While you are unlikely to ever change good ol' Bertha's mind, you probably don't want to let her have the last word on the topic. You can even wait until she's gone back home before you set the record straight.

In one way or another, the Leica Man discussion always ends up like this!
I finally bought a Leica about 5 years ago and it assuaged my “Leica envy.” I have to say I like it, it’s nice. Then I bought another one to keep it company. But I don’t like my other gear any less.

I agree. I bought a Leica M-A back when it was first introduced and I have never regretted it. They are very nice cameras, as I suppose they should be for the price.

But like you said, I still shoot my other cameras as well and I still love and use the K1000 I bought in a Reno pawnshop in 84. Of course that may not help my cause with some in this group.

I dunno. It seems to me that people should use the cameras that make them happy, and that they can afford. For me, the value proposition for spending a lot on 35mm gear isn't great. So I shoot Nikon rangefinders, and a Mamiya 7 II when I want quality higher than 35mm can afford.

The early M cameras are really nice cameras, though.

My Dad use to drink a lot of hot tea. He was in England during the War and maybe he picked up the taste for it there, I don't know. But he really loved his tea. I'd watch him drink it kind of weak and thin, with milk and sugar. Looked like tan colored dish water to me. I once ask him how he could stand to drink it. He said, "can't I have it the way I like it?" I never had an opinion on his tea after that.
I feel that this thread is about how some people think others should drink their tea.
To them I say, Can't I have it the way I like without you telling me what I should do.

Out and about using my MdA today. A young dood stops his car, leans out the window and yells "Is that a Leica?" I say yes. "Is that an M6?" he yells back. He was very excited and frankly nice. I explained to him what the MdA was, and that didn't dull his attention. But really it is amazing how the Leica M6 has become such a 'thing' with the youthful photographers.
And he did know about camera stuff, because when he asked what I was shooting, and I said 'C200', he replied that he loved that Fuji film for bright days like this. It was quite nice out in Santa Monica today.
