So, you are basing the "it's probably not PanF+" on some other fact (something like PanF+ is not good enough film for Leica, etc.) and not on the statements from the past 20 years of Harman existence that no Ilford film is or will be sold under any other name?

I just looked at Leica's ad they sent to my email and if I had to guess by looking at the test photos of the film, I'd say it probably is HR-50. Of course, we won't know until somebody uses it and reports back.

According to responses from Leica to questions posted on their IG account,

“The recommended retail price is 12 Euros incl. VAT”

and

“The film is made in Germany by a well-known established film company”.

If the film is repackaged HR-50 then that is about a 50% price premium for the Leica branded product.

At one time Harman seriously contemplated Delta 25. It would have been cool for Leica to have had them make that instead. They could have still called it Monopan "50" since it doesn't seem like people care too much about the accuracy of speed labelling on rebranded / novelty films.

i think HR50 is *also* aviphot 80, but with a light pre-flashing to raise the threshold for shadow detail. so really almost all the candidates are ultimately aviphot 80 - especially since leica mentioned it's sensitivity into the near-IR, which is kind of aviphot's thing.

The datasheet for Monopan 50 basically confirms it.
Comparing it to HR-50's datasheet, the spectral sensitization curves are identical, as are the suggested developers and their times, down to agitation instructions.

I'm saying they can change their policy at any time, so it could be PanF. But I doubt they will change their policy and I doubt it is PanF. It's not complicated.

Delta 100, Tmax 100 etc all run innumerable rings round Panatomic-X by every measure apart from resistance to gross user error. Every competently processed sample of it that I have had through my hands has had considerably stronger visual granularity than you might think (as in current 3D-crystal ISO 100 levels) - and there are tests done on Kodak's own test equipment that show how close run the granularity difference between 80s Panatomic-X and 80s Plus-X was.

Verichrome Pan was not a double coated emulsion (it was 135 Plus-X's emulsions coated in 120 as a budget film) - 1930s-mid 1950s orthochromatic Verichrome was the double layer coating. The advent of controlled crystal growth technologies etc by the mid 50's eliminated the need for excessive layers, relative to layer thickness & speed. 'Long scale' is a nonsensical phrase invented by Kodak Super-XX fanboys (with column inches to fill) who hadn't clocked that pre-Tmax, Super-XX was Kodak's principle 'general purpose' B&W sheet film, with most of the rest of Kodak's sheet offering being aimed at more specific purposes that were largely baked-in to the characteristic curves.

Leaving that aside, Harman would probably happily make you a 3D crystal structure ISO 50 film of whatever colour sensitisation and curve shape you wanted - if you were prepared to underwrite the R&D and production costs...

So, f/0.95, f/1.4, f/2 and f/2.8 get the same shutter speed 1/1000. (I know Leica film cameras are topped at 1/1000) but that is over 2 stop difference, so you either over expose massively or underexpose massively. I dont know how HR50 holds that but that will make the photos very contrasty or washed out. For perfect cat pictures

A great pity they missed the opportunity to put a proper long-tongue leader for Barnack cameras (after all, that's the centenary being celebrated), and personally I do not like the super-pan look, there is sensitivity beyond the normal human V-lambda sensitivity curve. Fortunately I have a stock of IR absorbing filters for each camera to deal with this.

This is one for the collectors I think. I get my HR-50 direct from Adox/FotoImpex.
