Matt.... Next door in Alberta Gary Clennan is doing fine work at reasonable cost & in Cdn loonies $$....& has worked on just about anything imaginable. He's replaced a broken rangefinder glass on a Leica CL (found NOS part !)...& reformed the bent top....serviced a Perkeo ll and a Canon 28mm LTM....for me. Check out his website &/or instagram page.... www.lensmedicyyc.com

I always appreciate a recommendation, even if they are a 950 km drive from here.

Frankly, this forum could use a locked thread listing known active repair people, locations and contact information, updated as people get added or stop doing business. It is very difficult to find people such as the one you mention.

And so far, no border walls have been put up between our provinces - other than a bit of a spat about liquor taxation.

Of course they do, that is the major cause in having a camera serviced when the grease dries out and becomes hard or sticky. It's as dumb as saying a Rolls Royce never needs re-greasing from time to time, wheel bearing etc.. Grease is basically a liquid oil with a thickener and the oil evaporates over time leaving behind the thickener, your film advance lever may become stiff, the shutter button sticks down, and the shutter drags. So, what did you do when you sent your Leica for a CLA, did you ask the technician to leave the old grease because it is 'Leica grease'? And if you don't know how grease works what makes you think you know how WD-40 would work as a sparingly applied diagnostic tool tool?

Sorry I was little blunt in replying after seeing WD-40. My intention is not to hurt but to see M2 is not getting broken beyond repair.

It is a great idea, but really hard to implement using the forum structure.
Something like an editable webpage, maintained by an individual or small group is much better suited.
If someone wishes to set something like that up, we would be keen to have a locked thread with a link to the page.

Almost $800 later repair by a usual suspect the wind is better but still sucks! His excuse was leica’s were custom made so not the same. Last camera I send. From Now one I will just put them on the shelf.
I hate those Leica repair people./

Sounds like a weak excuse. The M2 certainly not "custom made", either. He may have done a mountain of work on it and discovered that it still was stiff when he reassembled it. Maybe things don't line up in there the way they should, and there's nothing to do about it short of replacing lots of parts.

...but on the bright side, it didn't take this "Professional" 6+ months to fail.

All M bodies through the M5 were hand fit, but that's no reason for this to not be resolved. Unless the camera needs a part that is no longer available, or it has undergone severe structural stress to the point of severely deforming the body, this is something that should be fixable. I have an M2 and M5 that were overhauled by DAG and an M4 done by Sherry Krauter and all of them operate like butter.

If the camera needs a part let me know. There are still parts.

I should have sent it to a competent person and waited.

I should send it to DAG and if he fixes it start a claim with PAYPAL for bad service. Does DAG do express work?

Your best bet is to phone Don and ask him how long it will take. He always gave me a time estimate.
As far as express.... it's worth remembering that as a prospective new customer, you're asking one of the very best in the business to fix problems caused by another "repair person.".....

We can do something like this. Takes a little curating from our part, but I'm definitely willing to give it a shot. I'll create a sticky thread and we'll see how it goes. If it doesn't turn out to work, we can always abandon it.

Edit - here it is: https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/repair-shops-in-and-out-of-business.210509/

To the OP, yes please. We want to know.

I was auto repair business for decades. Very rarely, but once in awhile, we had a situation we were either unable to resolve or unwilling to spend more resources on. If we were unable to resolve the original complaint the bill was zero $. I am guessing your stiff wind was your primary complaint which the repair person was unable (or unwilling) to resolve.

I think we all would love to know who failed to do this to your satisfaction.

Let it be noted that there are two sides to every story. In an ideal world, you'd let the person know it's being discussed here and they could tell their side.

I spent some years doing repair on very high end maritime electronic systems. Most of the customers complained only about cost, not quality. Once in a while, we'd make a mistake, be told about it, and fix it at no expense to the customer. But every now and then, there was that one customer that could never be made happy...

DAG quotes how long it will take him to get to the item and complete it. He's consistently been pretty much right on the money. Remember that you will pay expedited shipping fees to get it back.

I think we all know who it is.
Also before you give me an almost $800 bill an estimate should be given.

CR, don't you think expedited mail charges are small change compared to the value of the Leica in the box ?
