Just keep your plastic cold drink cup next time you go to McDonalds. Then print you own Leica label. You need to save that $70 for an authentic Leica paper clip, likewise made in China. ... or recycled from a McDonald's joint actually in Germany. That might explain it.

My enlarging lenses from Schneider Kreuznach and my single Nikon enlarging lens, have similar lens holders. The Nikon enlarging lens has the best one with a screw down plastic dome looking very much like the Leica, or is it that the Leica looks like the Nikon unit?

I remember seeing some Nikkor lenses in display cabinets/shelves in camera stores with the same type of protective cover. This was in the 70's.

Nikon lenses used to (F / Nikkormat era, possibly later?) come in a gold colored cardboard box with a lens bubble inside. I never bought one new, though. The Nikon lens bubbles have their own part codes (CP-1, CP-2, etc). Roland's Nikon lens page at http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/accessory.html says the CP-2 could fit the 200/4 lens, that's a big bubble. Sadly, very few Nikon lens bubbles have survived in pristine condition and they have all been gobbled up by collectors, so there are few alternatives left for those of us who want to put our lenses in plastic bubbles for protection before carefully arranging them into our Billingham bags.

Are these things actually desirable? I throw mine away when I receive one with a lens.

$70 in trash? Mr Moneybags over here!

Honestly, I don't know. But Leica seems to know their fanbase, obviously someone was asking for them.

Well, just to be clear, I sometimes receive them with old m42 screw mount lenses off ebay. They're just junk to me. But if I ever bought an actual Leica branded lens I now know to keep ALL the packaging in case I need to resell.

I don't know, they may well have been put together because they fit and the seller wanted to get rid of the thing.

I have a bunch of them from pre-AI Nikon lenses, and my Xpan lenses came w them. Buried until a pile of stuff somewhere.
I just find them to be annoying 'more stuff'.

That's possible, but I think more often manufacturers make stuff and then convince you that you can't live with out it. Was there really a groundswell of demand for five blades in your razor? How many people were clamoring for more shapes and flavors in their Trix? And what about Chia Pets?

I am not aware of any M42 lenses originally sold in a bubble. Was there such?

I thought I only got bubbles for M39 enlarging lenses. But then I found one (without thread or stud) for an Enna lens.

Yes, except this isn't a new innovation. It's more akin to to Nikon making a rangefinder after 40 years. They did it because it stoked up interest amongst hardcore fans, and for no other reason.

Someone asked for it and Leica determined they could sell them. So plastic lens cases it is! Which is fine. Same thing other than that I'd call it stoking nostalgia as opposed to a latest innovation fad. Either way, it's just marketing and Leica knows how to market to its fanbase. I'm sure they'll sell enough to cover the cost of this production run.

35mm film used to come in colorfully painted metal cans, may be they will bring that back too.

Do you really think someone asked Leica for a special edition M-P with a ping pong paddle covering?

If they made it, at the very least the product manager asked for it.

So, yes. Someone did.

** edit to add: That's also decidedly VERY different than the lens case that lenses used to come in, and you know it.
